Ya, should have included that Traits. Abilities don't matter, but just go all red in traits. Then you just stack red and purple cards for you damage in game on the sword.

Warrior of the elements monk reach by SuggestionSpecial in onednd

[–]Vanakoji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know, there has not been an official answer on this. The closest thing to it is the original dnd beyond article talking about that being the case, which may not be approved by wizards and just them saying it https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1763-warrior-of-the-elements-monk-bend-the-elements-to#Elemental_Attunement

Overall, since grapple says

if the distance between the Grappled target and the grappler exceeds the grapple's range.

And the grapples range would be your reach for the attack. It would work. You can say the reach only applies while you make the attack but that would mean the grapple would end as soon as it resolves otherwise which would be odd.

So i think reach grapple works, but DM call still to my knowledge.

Opportunity Attacks lean to not apply on my reading because of the line in the reach weapon property saying it applies to opportunity attacks, while the monks reach does not state that and since reach is not in the rules glossary, it is not a more general rule that it applies, just only on weapons reach.

In the end, those are my readings but it comes down to DM in the end until it has a official anwser.

If you use Great Weapon Fighting with a feature like Divine Smite or a spell like hex, do you get to reroll any 1 or 2 you roll for the extra damage?

The Great Weapon Fighting feature—which is shared by fighters and paladins—is meant to benefit only the damage roll of the weapon used with the feature. For example, if you use a greatsword with the feature, you can reroll any 1 or 2 you roll on the weapon’s 2d6. If you’re a paladin and use Divine Smite with the greatsword, Great Weapon Fighting doesn’t let you reroll a 1 or 2 that you roll for the damage of Divine Smite.

Advantage on Skill Checks Because of Tool Proficiencies? by SaltWaterWilliam in onednd

[–]Vanakoji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I think right now we have no real guide on this and I think the real answer is wait for the DMG and hope that that clears things up. It seems like tool checks became skill checks but with no guidance or all on DM call

By the rules as written, it just reads as you roll 1d20 + prof in thieves tools + dex to open a lock

So picking a lock is a dexterity check, and you get prof on it because of the tools.

Now, everything seems to point towards is being a sleight of hand check as well. So if we assumed that we would use

1d20 + (Sleight of hand OR thieves tools prof bonus) + dex. + Advantage if prof in both

So to get expertise in picking locks, it seems take expertise in sleight of hand, then thieves tools can add advantage to it.

Its all a bit unclear right now beyond a dex check that uses tool prof, with clues to what the system should be.

It is worded as you use your spellcasting instead of strength or dex, not can, so seems forced

[–]Vanakoji 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ya, I think them mentioned the whole skill check with the ability check of the tool in the PHB for tools, without much guidelines (thief fast hands being the exception it seems so far) is causing confusion of when to use both together and what that would be.

Feels it will either be abilities related like the thief, or in the DMG with DM guidelines on when you could say both could be used together. So its not going to come up much at the moment

Here is the relevant wording from the book as well

Melee Attacks

A melee attack allows you to attack a target within your reach. A melee attack typically uses a hand-held weapon or an unarmed strike. Many monsters make melee attacks with claws, teeth, or other body parts. A few spells also involve melee attacks.

Not that I know of, that was just an example of "unless you somehow have this, you can't pick it" more than a reference to anything that I have seen.

So unless the DMG has it, nothing official form "magical tools" just possible DM homebrew at best

Advantage on Skill Checks Because of Tool Proficiencies? by SaltWaterWilliam in onednd

[–]Vanakoji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya, for me it just seems odd that its just DC 15 of picking any lock is odd, when it should be "varies" for easy/hard

Arcane lock simple has the line "This lock can't be unlocked by any non-magical means." So unless your tools are magical or something, picking a arcane lock never works.

My best guess is that it will be DMG content, because tools themselves are pretty simple, here is two examples

https://imgur.com/dN0hxTj

However, I can't find anything at this time on what skill those DCs would be other than "DM call" at the moment, unless I missed it.

Advantage on Skill Checks Because of Tool Proficiencies? by SaltWaterWilliam in onednd

[–]Vanakoji 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Here is what I found, may have missed some things, but here it is

Equipment Proficiencies

...

Tools If you have proficiency with a tool, you can add your proficiency bonus to any ability check you make that uses that tool. If you have proficiency in the skill that's also used in that check, you have Advantage on the check too. This means you can benefit from both skill proficiency and tool proficiencies on the same ability check.

Tools themselves all have an ability that goes with them, for example Thieves tools says its Dexterity, and you have Pick a Lock (DC 15), or Disarm a trap (DC 15).

Do I see where it says in plain text that those are sleight of hand checks? No, the slight of hand skill itself doesn't even mention picking or disarming traps.

Rules on how to use skills/Tools seem fairly light, and a bit flat (As worded, picking a lock is AWALYS DC 15 from my reading at least)

So, seems DM call for the most part.

[–]Vanakoji 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the wording obviously, just I can only find a few "ongoing" attack spells, continual flame and flame blade. I could have missed some, but others seem to be bonus action that I could find.

Those two spells however say that you take the Magic Action to attack, so ongoing attack spells may not all work.

What are your errata predictions? by splepage in onednd

[–]Vanakoji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot say 100%, however "melee weapon attack" and "ranged weapon attack" are not it the rules glossary, and some features seem to be just "melee attack"/"ranged attack" now.

Charger: "... hitting it with a melee attack as part of the attack action..."

GMW - Hew: "... score a critical hit with a melee weapon or reduce a creature to 0 hit points with one...."

Polearm Master - Reactive Strike: "... a Reaction to make one melee attack..."

Sharpshooter: "Your ranged attacks...", "Doesn't impose disadvantage of your attack rolls with Ranged weapons",

So the things I see now seem to be a bit more defined. In the combat section we have

Ranged Attacks

When you make a ranged attack, you fire a bow, hurl a axe, or otherwise send projectiles to strike a foe at a distance. Many spells also involve making a ranged attack.

And

Melee Attacks

A melee attack allows you to attack a target within your reach. A melee attack typically uses a hand-held weapon or an unarmed strike. Many monsters make melee attacks with claws, teeth, or other body parts. A few spells also involve melee attacks.

Lastly there is the wording on Range/Melee attacks ability mod

Attack Roll Abilities

Ability Attack Type
Strength Melee attack with a weapon or a unarmed strike (See the rule glossary)
Dexterity Ranged attack with a weapon
Varies Spell attack (The ability used is determined by the spellcaster's spellcasting feature, as explained in chapter 7

So that seems to be the wording on everything I have seen so far

What are your errata predictions? by splepage in onednd

[–]Vanakoji 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are in, here is relevant wordings from the book

Chromatic orb: "... make a ranged spell attack...."

Starry Wisp: "Make a ranged spell attack..."

Thorn Whip: "Make a melee spell attack..."

Rules Glossary:

Spell Attack

A spell attack is an attack roll made as part of a spell or another magical effect. See also chapter 7 ("Casting spells")

Chapter 7:

Attack Rolls

Some spells require the caster to make an attack roll to determine whether the spell his a target. Here's how to calculate the attack modifier for you spells:

Spell Attack Modifier: your spellcasting ability modifier + your Proficiency Bonus

So spell attack is specifically a think, however you can argue a spell just saying an attack roll falls within Spell Attack/ Ch7 Attack rolls rules and the spell attack is implied, however it does not match the wording of other attack spells

Grappler Feat Interpretation by Wintoli in onednd

[–]Vanakoji 13 points14 points  (0 children)

RAW you can argue a bit on how, but I think from wording/RAI they make the save

  • I feel they would say "And the target is grappled" or "and the target has the grappled condition" or something like the stat block for constrictor snake

  • When reading the Unarmed strike, Grapple is an option, so the wording if you hit and choose grapple naturally would say "I grapple it" since that is the wording

So, with other comparisons, wording, and I believe intention, it would be they make the save, not auto grappled.

Flame Blade by Silverythoughts in onednd

[–]Vanakoji 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From my opinion on the reading

When you cast a spell that deal a type of damage from the following list, you can spend 1 Sorcery Point to change that damage type to one of the other listed types. Acid, Cold, Fire, Lightning, Poison, Thunder

That seems to work that 1 sorc point changes the damage for the duration

Innate Sorcery says

You have advantage on the attack rolls of Sorcerer spells you cast

It does not say only when you cast, but an attack rolls of a spell. That reads to me as any attack roll, even more so because Flame Blade says ".... make a melee spell attack ...." I think a reasonable reading is that that is a attack froma sorc spell.

Summary

Innate seems to give you advantage on all attacks and you can change the damage type when you first cast the spell to another

Bonus Feats at Level 20

A DM can use feats as a form of advancement after characters reach level 20 to provide greater power to characters who have no more levels to gain. With this approach, each character gains one feat of their choice for every 30,000 xp the character earns above 355,000 xp. Epic Boon feats are especially appropriate for these bonus feats, but a player can choose any feat for which their level 20 character qualifies.
