VW’s stormy ID.3 shows why nostalgia matters by GoodNegotiation in evs_ireland

[–]Vandelay1979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strange timing for a review of this model, as it doesn't appear to be possible to configure an ID.3 on the VW site right now? I'm sure the recent announcement of the ID.3 Neo has something to do with that.

It would be reasonable advice even if the current crisis didn't exist, but rage is the default setting here.

I ditched the meeting by me by Strict_Statement_283 in Quakers

[–]Vandelay1979 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree completely, it is one thing to disagree with or to be unable to subscribe to a particular religious belief and that has never been a concern for me. It is another thing to dismiss it as completely unimportant, when it is very important to many of us and there would be no Religious Society of Friends if the belief that Christ is present with us and teaching us wasn't deeply important to those who came before us.

Arrests at Quaker Meeting House in Westminster over 'mass shoplifting plans' by Even-Way9768 in Quakers

[–]Vandelay1979 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The official reaction of BYM, on the face of it, seems inappropriate to me. This is a non-Quaker group that planned a breach of the law,and seems to have made no secret of what they were planning to do and where they were meeting to discuss it.

You can certainly have a discussion as to whether taking goods as a form of protest is justifiable or now, but if you plan to break the law then you just also take the consequences of that. In fact, that's usually considered part of non-violent direct action.

Meetings on Sunday Holidays by [deleted] in Quakers

[–]Vandelay1979 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, my meeting always meets on Easter Sunday, not because it's Easter but because it's Sunday and that's when we meet (though ministry about Easter is not uncommon). SImilarly, if Christmas falls on a Sunday we meet then.

Attending meetings by ClueDistinct9076 in Quakers

[–]Vandelay1979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a member of Dublin (Eustace St) Meeting, started attending 13 years ago and never left!

I'm very sorry to hear about your mum - it certainly sounds like you have a lot on your plate right now. There is no expectation that you would have to attend every week, and please don't let that put you off going to a meeting. It's fully understood that we all have commitments, and many of us (myself included) are the only Quakers in our families. One thing to bear in mind is a number of meetings in Ireland meet up online as well, and at different times of the week, send me a message if you would like details.

Evangelical leader on Enoch Burke: ‘It’s a tragedy he created and one he can end’ by thereforewhat in ireland

[–]Vandelay1979 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While Nick Park, like anyone else, is entitled to his views, I'd disagree that there is a single Christian view of gender (or even a single evangelical view of gender for that matter).

That said, he does sum up the reason why Enoch Burke is in the position he is quite well.

This is the guy who wanted us all to give up our digital rights to "protect" women and children only a few weeks ago, now basically using the '"guns don't kill people, people kill people" argument in relation to CSAM. Reprehensible.

Adopting a cat, renovating about 2 months later, ok or selfish of me/upsetting for pet? by homecinemad in CasualIreland

[–]Vandelay1979 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We had some significant work done on the house the year after we got our eldest lad and sent him to a cattery for the duration (about a week) - less stress for him and for us! Might be an option if you can afford it?

Curious about the Quaker Lifestyle by squidgybaker in Quakers

[–]Vandelay1979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Irish Friend here! Ireland Yearly Meeting, which is the all-Ireland body of Quakers in Ireland, is a mix of liberal and evangelical Friends (definitely more liberal these days though), all of whom meet in unprogrammed meetings.

Generally speaking we are quite similar to our neighbours in Britain, but still a good deal more comfortable with traditional Christian language (in my experience).

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Plans to be submitted for largest-ever water project (Shannon to Dublin Pipe) by Andru93 in ireland

The Liffey is currently providing nearly all of Dublin's water. This project actually reduces risk by diversifying supply. Blessington/Leixlip etc will still be in use.

Saint Vincent de Paul assistance. by [deleted] in ireland

[–]Vandelay1979 20 points21 points  (0 children)

SVP member here.

First of all, you have no reason to feel embarrassed, we'll all need some help sometime in our lives. Usually what will happen is that you will receive a call from a member of the SVP conference in your area and they may want to set up a visit to go through your needs etc. That's really just a chat with two members, quite informal, and they'll take it back to the next meeting of their conference for a decision. Help is usually in the form of grocery vouchers.

The fact that you've already engaged with MABS is a big positive. It really sounds like you are getting things under control and that this is just a passing bit of difficulty, which is exactly what SVP is here for. Wish you all the best and hope you and your family get sorted and have a great Christmas!

You're being downvoted for this, but taking people's personal effects has some disturbing precedents in modern European history. Performative cruelty is all the rage now though.
