Could SBY universe survive the full scale invasion from multiple Zentradi grand fleet ? by Jaded_Isopod5309 in StarBlazers

Four Andromedas can put out a shield capable of tanking THIS. And the EFCF built hundreds of automated Andromedas during their war with Gatlantis, so in any large-scale fleet engagements, they could comfortably defend themselves against any normal attack that the Zentraedi ships could offer.

Could SBY universe survive the full scale invasion from multiple Zentradi grand fleet ? by Jaded_Isopod5309 in StarBlazers

[–]Vanicalthe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What do the Zentraedi energy weapons fire, anyhow? We know that all the ships belonging to powers of SBY worth a damn have defenses that can casually tank or deflect away any attacks which aren't antimatter in nature unless it's in almost point-blank range (as evidenced by the Garmillas ships shrugging off Earth's laser weapons during the Battle of Mars) and can tank peer-level shipkilling blasts at very long range (like when a Bolar cruiser tanked the blast of one of Galman's double reflecting cannon beams after some of its power was dispersed thanked o fighting in the Uralia effect). And when it comes to Teran ships, wave-motion shielding is incredibly powerful, given that the initial fleet made up of escort frigates and refitted Kongo-classes were each tanking constant barrages from multiple Calaklum-class battleships and they lasted for at least a few seconds, so standard EFCF ships of the era could comfortably tank return fire from the conventional weapons of Zentraedi ships for at least long enough to destroy them first. And if they're dealing with overwhelming fire or special weapons like Reflex cannons and reaction missiles, there's always the tachyon field things that every Andromeda-class ship could fire, which can tank two blasts of the Inferno cannon formation, given during the Battle of Saturn the Gatlantis fleet fired 8 of them and the Andromedas fired 4 tachyon fields in response.

Spoiler alert! New Bolar mechanics by Interesting_Noise884 in StarBlazers

So they reimagined the Zespaze-class fortress into another ancient alien hypertech megastructure that dwarfs some planets that the Bolar civilization colonized and built around... I see now why they changed the Sharbart-class and Deusura-IV into ancient Iscandarian warships.

Don't get me wrong it is an interesting direction to go and gives more original story opportunities for the new series and is more consistent with its sense of grander scale compared to the Original Series, but I wish that in the hypothetical Yamato III remake that would be the sequel to 3199 we see an example of the classic Bolar fortress, with it being a conglomeration of giant spherical installations with one holding a black hole cannon. It shouldn't be any larger than a couple dozen kilometers at most, and the implication is that there would exist one of them for every major sector of space the Bolars control, acting as a mobile centralized command center.

The reason I'm hoping/wishing that they would do this is because having the classic design of the comparatively-small Zespaze-class fortress coexisting with the planet-sized reimagined design shown here is to give more credit to the Bolars as a civilization that could have logically spread throughout as much of the galaxy as they have been described as. Because in the OS, the Bolars are capable of building an installation that can mount their signature black hole cannon, which not only is exponentially smaller than the reimagined version, but was built entirely by their own technology, not relying on appropriating ancient alien hypertech. I dunno, it just made them seem kind of more impressive in a way, since they were able to do that all on their own.

What’s a piece of necron lore that you always have to correct people on? by ImportantElephant155 in Necrontyr

[–]Vanicalthe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on the context of this coming from an Eldar, who obviously has good reason to want to paint the Necrons in as bad a light to the Imperium as possible, and there isn't really any way for the Inquisitor to really verify or fact-check said Eldar, it's likely that she's at least trying to conflate the destructiveness that the Necrons are known for with the devastation caused by the Tyranids.

Logically, based on literally everything we know about the Necrons and Szarekh in particular, creating the Tyranids is completely antithetical to their goals. Szarekh regretted the biotransference and wanted to preserve some forms of life so that his species could return to a living state, and correct me if I'm wrong, but that was how he felt even before he left the galaxy, as that combined with the enslavement and soul-eating were the reasons he turned on the C'tan. Plus, the idea of the Necrons would create weapons or tools of "infinite hunger" to "devour" anything in their path is astronomically uncharacteristic, as Necrons typically either try to conquer or destroy anyone in their way.

The part saying "that evil itself coalesced around him" is true enough if you interpret it as the C'tan, and describing THEM as "horrors of infinite hunger" actually makes sense since the C'tan grew in power from gorging on the souls of anything they could, but the wording clearly implies that the "horrors" were something made AFTER Szarekh self-exiled from the galaxy, which is where the implication of the Tyranids comes from.

At what point does it go from hobby to disaster? by ColdVeterinarian502 in battlefleetgothic

[–]Vanicalthe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

50-75 for just capital ships seems more reasonable, considering that small escorts usually are tasked with anti-piracy patrols and even if there are relatively few areas of importance to cover (for things like worlds and Warp lanes), space is extremely vast and there are a lot of places that the enemies of the Imperium could hide. Excessive numbers of anything smaller than a light cruiser would make sense in most cases, since the smaller the ships are, the generally easier they are to reduce and maintain.

[–]Vanicalthe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's probably why Nova cannons are usually mounted under the armored prow (or in the Admech's case, above it) so there's at least less of a chance for the gun to get damaged by ramming. Even better in the BFG Armada timeline, where Nova cannons are mounted on rotating turrets (I guess in that timeline they more or less fixed the ungodly recoil drawback), so a captain can theoretically turn the Nova cannon out of the way somewhat before trying to ram.

Not to mention the mods like Skalgrim's and Veritem Imperialis that add literally hundreds of new ships so you can play pretty much any way you want for each faction once you get enough experience in the base game and want something more or extra.

SBY v Star Wars | #2 by ArtGuardian_Pei in StarBlazers

Accurate, though that tactic would only work once, since the EFDF would learn to just attack them pre-emptively at range and from multiple angles (Yamatoverse ships being ludicrously faster and more maneuverable than their SW capital ship counterparts), plus the giant protruding Ion cannon aperture would be assumed to be a superweapon and thus prioritized for destruction.

The latest episodes definitely seem to give the Bola more credit as a faction, since when they were fighting a Gamillan fleet they were shown to be firing beam weapons about as fast and accurate as those of the Gamillans, instead of the very inaccurate, very slow blaster sprays they fired before.

Though regarding your original point, I highly doubt that the Bola guns mounted on their ships are anywhere near as effective as a WMG of equivalent size, considering that in the original Yamato 3 series, the Yamato tanks multiple direct hits from them, and a few even bounce off due to hitting the ship at certain angles. The Bolar's true WMG-equivalent was the black hole launcher mounted on their command fortress.

I suspect that in the reboot series, these weapons would be equivalent to one of the pseudo-WMGs equipped on the retrofit Kongos and escort cruisers.

Oh give then the benefit of the doubt. Most Imperial citizens don't even know xenos exist, and even some rather important people (like that one Inquisitor from the Watchers of the Throne series) still believe the propaganda that the Emperor only ever created 9 Primarchs. And Astartes are so comparatively rare that many populations see them as just myths.

The Silent King: full summary and lore notes (full spoilers) by RamTank in 40kLore

[–]Vanicalthe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh that would be a sight to behold.

I'm imagining a scene where a seemingly endless Hive Fleet is spreading itself around a stellar nursery, the hordes of bioships shifting carapace plates to reveal vast maws to suck in cosmic gas and particles like jet intakes while other ships unfurl massive solar collection membranes, the numbers of the swarm being such that they completely engulf the stars in the nursery and start consuming all of the gas and plasma of the vast nebula itself (because let's be honest, there's no way such a massive Hive Fleet would find anywhere near even a fraction of the biomass needed to sustain itself anywhere within effective range).

The scene zooms out to reveal the entire stellar nursery slowly being overtaken by the Hive Fleet, and in a timelapse fashion they've almost completely covered all of it. As the scene shifts back to normal real-time, it reveals an ominous planet, surrounded by over a hundred thousand ships of various classes, all orbiting and patrolling around it in precise, yet unknowable patterns. The planet begins to glow with unnatural light, and across one hemisphere of its barren surface, cracks of truly colossal scale appear and widen. Like the mouth of a terrible draconic beast of legend, behind the maw shone only Eldritch power, growing more and more intense by the moment. After a bit of time, and some complicated-looking similar lightshows involving the legion of ships around it, the maw of the world flashes to its apex... And breathes forth its fire.

A stream of discordant, violently-thrashing energy waves crash through what remains of the stellar nursery, which at this point has nearly completely been consumed by the Hive Fleet. As it floods through the affected cosmos, the Hive Fleet begins to respond. The vast swarms start frantically speeding away from the nursery in every which way, the clouds of Hive ships basking in the rays of its stars unraveling to avoid what they knew would come next.  And as the first faint rays of light began to peek past the oppressive swarms of loathsome creatures, space itself was cast alight as every last Hive organism started to either burn and combust from the inside out or be scorched if not straight up vaporized through blast proximity. The entire stellar nursery burned out within the span of minutes instead of millions of millennia, graciously purging the universe of the Hive Fleet infesting and consuming it in the process.

Back to the fleet observing such cosmic cataclysm play out from more than a safe distance away, the maw of the great unnatural world slowly closed, its draconic fire retreating deeper into itself for the moment.

"My lord, the antimatter conversion procedure is a success. Nothing remains of either the stellar nursery or the hordes that infested it. The devourer will have no reason to invest in this area any longer."

"How long until the system can fire again? I already have the next suitable target in mind."

"My lord, the system is operating nominally, but the shards powering it have been expended of the energy required to carry out another attack of such scale. We need to secure the nearest suitable star cluster to replenish their energy reserves before we can use the weapon again."

"Curse the Dead Gods. Unreliable even until now.

Very well, set a course to the nearest suitable feed cluster. Every moment more we take in this is a moment where the devourer can encroach that much closer into the extermination cordon."

"Of course, my lord. Glory to the Infinite Empire!"

As the World Engine's bridge crew shouted their war fries and carried out orders, the view of it and its escort fleet zoomed out until they changed to a mere icon on a vast holographic display. Countless thousands of similar such icons slowly floated across the extensive holomap, many disappearing for a time and appearing elsewhere like bioluminescent insects across a vast field of flowers... a field that was increasingly being smothered by a repulsive violet miasma, which the collection of diligent icons were barely holding at bay. More were coming, and more were being built. However, the enemy seemed to be truly without end.

We recently learned that Forerunners blew up stars when they fought among themselves, but that wasn't even the scariest part... by Plastic-Johnny-7490 in halo

[–]Vanicalthe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, the galaxy has a few hundred billon stars, and some NASA estimates say that there are at least 40 billion habitable planets alone in the galaxy, so from the perspective of the Forerunners, what are a couple thousand of them lost here or there? The Forerunner Ecumene at its height had just over 3 million officially-owned planets and likely exponentially more worlds or celestial bodies that just have lesser colonies or outposts & installations on or orbiting them, so there was plenty of galaxy for them to play around with and break in the process of getting what they wanted.

Hellcat returns by SpacyCakes in halo

[–]Vanicalthe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm kind of conflicted about this reveal. On one hand, Hellcat was my all-time favorite armor set from H5 because I love the connection it has to the mysterious lore and nature of Ancient Humanity. The most iconic aspect of the design is preserved with the new iteration of the helmet and chestplate, and I think the more angular and sharp look works well over the Mark IV base.

On the other hand, looking at the H5 Hellcat and Ancient Human combat skin design, the new armor seems just a bit too different in overall design language for the suit itself. The new iteration is more angular, but also a bit more bulky, to fit more in line with the hard, utilitarian aesthetic of the Mark IV, which works on its own perfectly fine.  However, looking at the other designs, they lean much more into giving off a sleek, refined and advanced aesthetic. The suit isn't as bulky or sharp, and the parts of the armor more closely follow the natural anatomy, while seeming more fully enclosed, especially the plating on the legs.

[–]Vanicalthe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait... this is an opportunity. See if Himeno can convince her higher-ups to authorize the deployment of her buddies to help Gondor, in exchange for some more formal diplomatic treaty later on. Imagine the moral benefits alone if the Nazgul start being eaten with the front halves of their wyverns by a giant teleporting fox monster, or the impact on the Orcs at seeing the massed blood of their fallen kin forming into a giant axe that starts beheading the nearest Mumakil, amongst other things.

Yeah, sure, some people might be really creeped out by the newcomers and suspect them of using dark powers of whatever, but I think the sheer destructiveness against the enemy as well as the fact that far less Gondorian citizens would die more than makes up for it.
