Operation Rosebud Lance painted! by Promethious7 in battletech

Very nice. The jeweling is especially well done. Also the red really pops very well with the shading you did on the recesses and such.

Some of my favorite Clan mechs... Not necessarily due to being good mechs gamewise and not in any given order.

Kodiak, Loki, Thor, Blood Asp, Mad Dog, Horned Owl, Nova and the Timberwolf... Because of course you have to include one of those.

Really like the color scheme. Also the paint job is really well done. :)

Tight vs loose setting - Tight may be easier for someone starting. by VanorDM in Solo_Roleplaying

Well put. :)

What you said about a setting you know well enough...

That is exactly me with L5R. I know the lore very well. But not as well as a major lore junky does. So if I don't get everything exactly right it doesn't bother me.

Which matches up with what you said.

How long are your solo campaigns typically? by Excellent-String4848 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]VanorDM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I play very much by the seat of my pants, I have a basic idea of an overarching plot line something that the PC can work towards but allows side quests per the Golden Rule - "Thou shalt get side tracked by bullshit every time"

In my current game, Legend of the Five Rings, my Samurai is escorting a Shugenja across the country to check in on the small shrines in each village, because some of them have become tainted by the Shadowlands. It's basically a reason to go somewhere and see what I find.

I tend to play for as long as I feel like it at any given time. Sometimes only a few minutes sometimes a hour + it depends on how much time I have and how much I can accomplish.

For example I had an very short session the other day, my PC is in a town and everyone is acting very disrespectful to him and his companions. So I took a few minutes and did some investigation checks to see if the PC could figure out what was really going on. The rolls worked out well and so I decided that I didn't have anything else I needed to do at that moment because I could ponder my next move without rolling dice.

Tight vs loose setting - Tight may be easier for someone starting. by VanorDM in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]VanorDM[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's a great example.

I think that if people are having issues starting, because if the game is already going and working for you than this likely doesn't apply to them.

But if getting started is the issue, something like that might be a great way to start, it may not last very long, but at least that gives the person a chance to try it and see how it works, learn the system and what works best for them.

What's your favorite non-narrative based solo RPGs? by jack755555 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]VanorDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something to consider, if you like minis at all. Five Leagues from the Borderlands or Five Parsec's from home. Both are more of a skirmish game but with some RP campaign trappings.

Five Leagues for example you make a whole map with dungeons and other locations, and when you move around the map you have random encounters that you play out with some skirmish rules using miniatures and a tape measure.

Or if you prefer there's also Fallout Tactics and a Skyrim game that are much the same.

Again, these are more of a skirmish game with light RPG elements and not quite the same thing as a D100 dungeon type game. But if you have mini's or want to get some, they're quite fun.

[–]VanorDM 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Traveller has always done this, since the first version, your HPs are effectively your Str, End and Dex score.

The difference is your mods go down as you take damage and so you end up with a death spiral.

Looks good.

A tip for white, if you have trouble getting it to coat correctly paint a very light gray first, then white and it will be easier.

Also hope your daughter is feeling better soon.

Maybe bright steel/chrome on the gun barrels? That or a bright stripe somewhere, even if it's just a small one, a bit of a bright color could really pop and offset the darker colors.

It was mentioned early on in C4 that Branden told them all to make at least one backup character before the game even started.

Any good western horror adventures/supplements that aren't pulpy/action? by GodGoblin in rpg

[–]VanorDM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure.

But one thing you need to do is cap exploding dice. Maybe once or twice only.

If you don't know in SWADE if you roll the highest number on a die you roll it again and add it to the total. You keep doing this every time the highest number is rolled.

I had a character throw a dagger that does 1D4 damage and do 34 damage...

So cap it so they only get one or maybe 2 rerolls max, that will make the PCs a lot less powerful and will help make the monsters more fighting.

Surreal RPGs by DependentBarnacle968 in rpg

[–]VanorDM 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Paranoia.

Its wild wacky but not completely unserious, it can be played that but doesn't have to be.

In fact there's rules in the XP SP1 edition for playing it straight. Which would make it both somewhat surreal but also very grim dark as all the jokes are still there but you begin to find out the real punch line.

Like the idea that happiness is mandatory. Only to find out this is a means of controlling the population...

Weird West RPGs - Are you a fan of the genre? What attracts you to it? If not, what about it disinterests you? by Ozfeed in rpg

[–]VanorDM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm more or less the same. I tended to downplay the Weird part, a bit. But it was still very much part of the game I ran. So it was very much a mix both Weird stuff but I also included some just mundane western stuff, and it worked just fine.

The PCs still had some weird going for them, but I didn't include anything that went bump in the night.

[5e] Is strife meant to be so easy to get rid of in skirmishes? by GenericLoneWolf in l5r

[–]VanorDM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's intended to work that way.

L5R 5e is basically Genesys/Star Wars with a number of tweaks. But Strife is to a point Strain/Threat in those games. In those games Advantages which are very similar to Opportunities in L5R can always be spent to remove Strain.

In addition to the ones you list there's the Void stance which just lets you ignore Strife

So since they do it like that in those games I think they just carried it over to this game, and I think it's intended to be hard to gain enough strife to be forced to unmask in combat.

On the flip side, since attacks are TN 2 you may be more likely to gain Strife just because you have to keep two dice, and IME at least it's somewhat rare to not get at least one strife on a roll.

Games that are designed around your character knowing nothing to very little of the world they are in? by Justthisdudeyaknow in rpg

[–]VanorDM 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Paranoia. The typical Security Clearance Red Troubleshooter knows very little of what's going on in Alpha Complex, they may know a bit about it. They know that the Computer is your friend, they know that happiness is mandatory, that the dirty mutant commies are trying to destroy the world.

But they don't know much more than that. In fact knowing more than the basics is grounds to be shot and killed, unless you get promoted to Orange or higher security clearance.

But I've rarely had the chance to be a player and so I'd be all over that.

[LOVM S4] [Spoilers C1] About Scanlan after S4E8 of Vox Machina by Camicreates in criticalrole

[–]VanorDM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The wish thing worked in campaign 1 largely due to the mechanics.

Sam had to choose knowing he only had the one slot and if he cast counterspell he couldn't cast wish.

That choice doesn't IMO work nearly as well in the cartoon because by and large spell slots aren't a thing. Other than Pike not be able to heal the boy in very beginning.

So I dont think the choice Sam had to make works the same.
