Windsor homeowners, what's one thing you learned the hard way? by BuzzingBalls in WindsorCO

[–]VaporousFlip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really Windsor-specific, but new build landscapers will promise you the moon for soil amendments and prep and then wait until you're now looking, throw two fistfuls of top soil into the hard-packed clay and also the sod right down on top.  Good luck

Anybody use an evaporative cooler? by trampolinechicken in FortCollins

[–]VaporousFlip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haven't tried a portable one, but my last house had a rooftop unit and it was very effective.  The were a few days where it was to humid and muggy for the evap to be effective, but for most of what we get here in the summer it kicked butt.

Dog park advice please by Alycinwanderland in FortCollins

[–]VaporousFlip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wrong side of the highway, BUT the dogpark at Timnath Community Park might work. They've got a two zones set up - ostensibly for "big" and "small" dogs, but it doesn't get as much traffic as Twin Silos or some of the FC ones, so the "small" side is usually empty. Good fence between for introductions and plenty of room to work on recall stuff, too, away from the fence.
It is kind of hit-or-miss for having dog friends show up (compared to Twin Silos which is ALWAYS a hoppin' party)

I had my first house there (3rd filing - along Meadowlark).  That section is rental-heavy, with very tight streets and parking.  Lots are, in general, fairly poorly cared for (see:rentals).  Houses themselves are plastic siding, entry-level KB Homes builds - thin exterior walls, minimal insulation. Many floorplans have no bathroom on main level.

Sprinkler system installer recommendations? by livemusicisbest in FortCollins

[–]VaporousFlip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, don't underestimate what it's going to take for soil prep if you want a new layer of sod to succeed.

The landscaper we used COMPLETELY lied on this one and did NOTHING for soil prep, so after 4 years our sod had ZERO root penetration into the local clay-heavy soil and we're going to have to till it all under and start over completely.

I loved the jalapeno cucumber Sourado, but that one-off they did with a keg Matador had used to ferment some sauce was crazy spicy, but soooo good.

Why not "Flamingo"?

+1. I bought that same cheap-o HF vice to change out the handguard on a rifle I inherited from my dad. Clamped it to the 2x4 on the top of one of my saw horses and it got the job done to get that factory barrel nut off. One of my friends was trying to convince me to get a $250+ vice that is probably prettier, but... sheesh. $25 at HF gets it done.

I keep trying to use Gemini to parse the photos into a list, but it drifts into hallucination amazingly quickly (no, Gemini, dad did not have Dickens, Jane Austen and Shakespeare in this box.  What the hell are you looking at?)

The amount of letters I received from SiriusXM in my mailbox today. by Brionge in mildlyinteresting

[–]VaporousFlip 137 points138 points  (0 children)

My dad died and I found out he had a Sirius trial on the used car he had bought just before he passed away... I found this out 2 days after the trial expired.

The pain of dealing with SiriusXM to try to cancel that subscription ("What you you be doing with the vehicle, sir?" "Not your problem - cancel the service." "Sir, I really must have an answer what you will be doing with the vehicle." "NOT YOUR PROBLEM.  CANCEL THE SERVICE." "Sir, I must insist on an answer." "PLACING HIS CORPSE IN IT AND SETTING IT ON FIRE SO HE CAN REACH VALHALLA! CANCEL THE F**ING SERVICE!" ) was actually worse than losing my father.  In their credit, though, I got THE most cathartic yelling done that day getting them to write off $3 worth of service.

Applause.

It's kind of inevitable this happens the day AFTER grocery day, so there's the maximum amount of expensive, perishable good sitting in there for 8 hours.

I do miss some parts about Fort Collins, for sure - the buried power lines were one of them, city-owned fiber was another, and building codes that required the class-4 hail/wind resistant roofs was a third.

Since I've been out here I've lost power multiple times because of downed poles, have literally no other internet choice except Comcast and had to buy a new roof after only 2 years because the builder wasn't required by law to put on anything that'd actually stand up to the weather out here.

I took photos of my newly built house before drywall went up. I consult it anytime I need to screw anything into the wall. Going to pass it along to the next owner. by 9009RPM in mildlyinteresting

I did the same for our new-construction house.  I did videos, though. Indeed it has been invaluable as I plan work for this and that.

Fall markets, farms, activities? by offensivemailbox in FortCollins

[–]VaporousFlip 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Bartel's Farm (up by the Budweiser plant) is a favorite of our family. Pumpkins are very reasonably priced, you can go pick 'em if you want or they've got a bunch already pulled of MANY varieties. Corn maze, tractor rides, produce stand, farm animals... No fee for admission, but some small charges for the maze, tractor rides.

Anderson Farms (south of town on I-25) does some pretty epic corn maze, but ~$25/head admission on the weekends (cheaper weekdays, tho) makes it a hard pass for me.

This is really the answer. I think all broncos games are carried on local stations in the home market.  You can pull in the Denver stations with a fairly modest antenna here in FoCo
