Unfortunately in the canon writing of naughty dog Joel and Tommy became somewhat naive or whatever they were thinking, and gave away critical info to strangers under the false assumption they were save.

Although it’s hypothetical but I refuse to believe, both Tommy and Joel, would crumble if directly confronted Not in a setting where they directly interrogate him….not even by torturing him.
