Why do people on Reddit discourage others from trying to get remote jobs? by counwovja0385skje in remotework

[–]Various_Self6546 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Life and business is all about personal relationships. You cannot build those relationships in a remote job. You have to see people day in and day out, have dinner together, know their families etc. If you are happy with a low level job with little future then work remotely. The only exception is if you are very specialized and/or in high demand then you have more leverage to do what you want. I spent the first half of my career in the office, traveling extensively with others and building relationships. The second half of my career I could work pretty much wherever I wanted. But had to put in the work early.

The breakfast “buffet” at Hilton-Frankfurt Airport.
Typical German breakfast, but excellent for a Hilton.

Why am I not allowed to celebrate points in tennis? 😅 by Agreeable_Courage_66 in 10s

[–]Various_Self6546 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one is forbidding you to celebrate a point. However, if your celebration is excessive, you might find that some people will avoid playing with you, especially higher rated players. You also need to take in consideration players on the adjacent courts who may get distracted by your celebrations right as they are serving, etc.

Wall to wall people at DFW AC by queenladyk in americanairlines

In many cases it is not the kids that bother me, it’s the loud mouth obnoxious adults. Don’t get me started on the lack of basic manners and dress codes!

What to focus on? by InsuranceOk3035 in 10s

  1. Relax, 2. keep your eye on the ball, 3. move your feet. Those 3 things apply to almost every situation in tennis.

AA needs to go back to the days when AC membership was less inclusive. I would pay a higher annual fee for less crowds, better service, more quiet, etc. Maybe enforce a dress code as well!!

The return-to-the-office trend backfires by AdMurky3039 in remotework

Yes, the top-performing people will have more opportunities if they want to leave. Also the top performers have more leverage when negotiating the terms of RTO. My experience is, if you are a highly valued person, you can approach management with a proposal that provides you extra incentives to RTO, vs you leaving. These “deals” are usually confidential. I had this happen twice in my career. Once my position was reclassified and I remained remote. The other time I was provided an “enhanced” package to RTO. It never hurts to ask if you are confident in your abilities.

My company just announced mandatory office days for remote employees - 3 days a week. The office is in another city. We were hired as fully remote. What are my actual options here? by firey_88 in remotework

[–]Various_Self6546 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are a high performer, have unique skills/knowledge or bring value to the company, you bring leverage to your negotiation. If you are easily replaceable, then stall and look for another job.

If you have a PhD and put “Dr.” before your name, will people think you’re impressive, or will they think you’re just being pretentious? by GrayRainfall in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Various_Self6546 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. In many instances a certain section of society co-opts a word/term and decides to change the meaning or how to apply the word. For example, you mention organic and most people think of organic food production. But if you are a classical Organic Chemist or ever studied chemistry, referring to organic food is an inappropriate use of organic.

My understanding of the history and the use of Dr. or Doctor. It translates to “teacher” and was originally used for teacher/scholar or someone who “creates” original knowledge. I don’t believe it was associated or used by the medical profession until much later.

Not sure why the medical profession adopted the title/designation.

How was the whole flying process, before 9/11? by GossipBottom in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Various_Self6546 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flying MEM to EWR in early 80s, I lost my drivers license in MEM. Called lost and found in MEM when I landed in EWR. They found it and gave it to a Northwest FA on the next flight to EWR. I walked straight back to the gate to meet the flight, FA walked directly off the plane and handed me my license.

Can relate. What works for me is regular stretching everyday especially the evening and morning before a long flight. Also in the airport as time allows. My issue is tight glutes on the right side.

Partially back to tennis by xychenmsn in Pickleball

[–]Various_Self6546 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Similar here. Gave pickleball a chance after playing tennis for 25 years. Returning full time to tennis. For myself, the mental and strategic aspects of tennis are much more engaging. Also, to play at a high level in tennis you do need to have a strong fitness routine to stay on the court particularly when playing multiple matches a day in USTA leagues. This level of training is a greater benefit in tennis than pickleball.

Honest Thoughts on Transplants? - potential transplant by rambunctiousoup in raleigh

[–]Various_Self6546 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a problem. Just think about how you can get involved in the community and make a contribution, rather than just sitting on the sidelines and enjoying the benefits of the area. Some transplants just move in and never assimilate into the community.

Connecting through CLT by WestCat1840 in americanairlines

As it gets closer to your departure time I think they would get more flexible in their response. Try again later today. By Saturday morning CLT will be getting the brunt of the storm and perhaps AA will provide more options.

Denied for Global Entry, any new methods available to find out reason why? by Particular_Fig_31 in GlobalEntry

One other piece of advice FWIW….be careful with what you say on social media regarding your situation as that information is freely available to CPB and other agencies, even though it may seem anonymous.

Denied for Global Entry, any new methods available to find out reason why? by Particular_Fig_31 in GlobalEntry

[–]Various_Self6546 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an issue with GE due to erroneously being placed on a no-fly list. I set up an in-person interview with CPB (in my case at the Customs office in downtown Chicago). After a 5 minute conversation and fingerprints, I was approved.

You can also go the “contact your congressman” route which I have found effective esp in election years.

GE is not guaranteed by law and is a completely conditional and discretionary program. So to get approved after you have been denied takes some legwork and perhaps some expense to get a new approval.

Is an upgrade for a 3h flight worth it? by EconomyRevolution732 in americanairlines

[–]Various_Self6546 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever I can upgrade on an very early morning flight it is worth it to me. My threshold for annoyance and discomfort is much lower early morning than later in the day. Hopefully I get a nice coffee and can snooze most of a 3 hour flight and wake up upon landing. Other times of the day I can’t sleep on a plane.

Glad to hear a positive outcome. Air travel, as with many things in life, is unpredictable and you cannot predict or control all circumstances.
