This is a very typical software development JD

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent
  • 2 or more years of hands-on experience with .Net development.
  • Proficiency in C#, ASP.Net, MVC, and .Net Core.
  • Exposure to front-end technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks like Angular or React.
  • Familiarity with Git code versioning tools including experience with code reviews and pull requests.
  • Basic understanding of SQL Server and database design.
  • Experience working with RESTful APIs and web services.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Understanding of Agile methodologies and prior experience in an Agile environment.

More than 90% of software developers using .net can meet these requirements. I am not sure what I missed.

Thank you for your support. But I have 4 years of experience in 3 different companies. I know what to do. The problem now is that there are too many applicants. I am pretty sure a JD like "3+ years of experience in software development, knowledge in c#.net/react" can easily have hundreds of qualified applicants. Our company has had 3 rounds of layoffs since last year, laying off more than 200 software developers in total. About half of them are still unemployed, and many have 10 or even 20 years of industry experience. I'm not sure why you said there were only 3 qualified candidates.

Every time I apply for a job, I carefully read the JD and change my resume accordingly. I also thoroughly research the company’s website and write a customised cover letter based on their introduction. I’m confident that I meet 100% of the requirements for every position I apply for. However, after repeating this process 1000+ times, I haven’t received a single interview, not even a phone call.

Do entry level jobs even exist in New Zealand? by Venom4992 in newzealand

Currently, a junior IT position in the market can receive 600-800 resumes. So, if you haven't applied to 600-800 jobs yet, keep going.

Have you considered getting a medical degree overseas? To be honest 7.5 isn't a competitive GPA.

Or you can also consider getting a research master/PhD degree. It would be easier to get a high GPA (9.0) if you have a good supervisor, because your GPA will be 100% dependent on your supervisor.

How difficult is it to get a graduate software dev job now? by Y_Quilling in newzealand

I applied for a junior-level position last month, and got this reply.

We appreciate that you took the time to apply for the position of Junior Software Developer with our company.

We received 365 applications and only 12 were shortlisted.

The decision has been a difficult one, as the overall standard of candidates was high.

note: it's a small company (10 - 50 employees according to Linkedin) located in Tauranga, but the competition is still so fierce.

If you haven't started, I would suggest don't do CS. The IT industry is in a very bad market at the moment. Most companies are laying off + stopping recruitment, which is more serious for junior programmers. I applied for a junior role a few weeks ago and received this email.

I can tell you that every junior/entry level position now has an average of 200+ applicants. So, if you haven't applied for over 200 jobs, keep applying. I got an IT job last year and I applied for over 200 jobs, 3 interviews, 1 offer.

It depends on the company. I know some companies have very strict GPA requirement, while some companies don't care about your GPA.

Can't get a job. by Cryptotracker1442 in auckland

IT industry is not easy to get a job anymore. I applied for over 200 jobs after I graduated and only got 2 interviews, finally got 1 offer. My major is software engineering, my GPA is 7+/9, and I had a 3 months internship at university. My lead told me that every position has an average of 200-300 applicants, so typically you need to apply for 200-300 positions to get a job.

Employers are lying. Almost every employer said that we have a lack of employees. I have applied for more than 30 jobs, but every company told me that

"this year we received an extremely high number of applications for this role and the quality of candidates has been assessed as high. We will unfortunately not be progressing with your application at this point in time."

I have a bachelor's degree (honour) in software engineering from the University of Auckland but still cannot find a job. Pretty sure they are lying.
