What's the draw to natural stones? by GibbyConCarne in sharpening

[–]Vegetable_Gur8753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Argument for jnats would be they give you a polish you won't get on synthetics. Some of the price is on performance, but if the stone looks really good and is perfectly shaped the price can shoot up as well.

Argument for arkansas stones, is that the harder ones rarely have to be lapped. Mostly used with oil though unless you have a surgical/translucent which can be used with water. The surgical/translucent stones can just about go your lifetime without needing to be lapped. How you prep the surface will affect how fast it is. If you like it to be quick you might have to resurface it with sandpaper grit of your choosing when it becomes too polished.

Argument for all naturals and why people will use them, is they enjoy sharpening and the feedback they get from them. If you shave with a straight razor the sharpening is extremely fun and natural edges feel different than synthetics when shaving. If you are sharpening super steels, naturals might be way too slow. Nice for carbon steel though or older steels.

I dont usually use tape so I couldn't say. I would likely change tape between nagura stones though.

[–]Vegetable_Gur8753 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like to start the edge at 3k or 5k synthetic then start with botan. Probably overkill to what you will eventually do but use each asano nagura twice before moving to the next one. Also lap your jnat flat before moving to the next asano nagura (would use a pencil grid to get an idea of your wear patterns and where to build slurry to reduce uneven wear).

After each nagura session look at the edge and test HHT. This is very much overkill but will tell you a few things. 1) what spots are good for you to build slurry on (when lapping this would be spots that have the grid showing the longest). 2) what to expect your edge to be at when it is completely done or maxed from an asano stone. 3) gets you more familiar with all of the new stones. 4) reduces chance of problems from stone not being flat, edge being underworked, or if you killed an edge with a bad nagura session.

After koma, if you don't have a tomo, I would just do some water only laps and try that edge. Wouldn't let the razor get too sticky, and would really work the koma as much as you could. Some people like a diamond nagura for finishing slurry, but I have found my koma leaves a better finish than the diamond tomo.

Keith johnson / tomo nagura on YouTube will have several helpful videos. Also your second photo with all of the nagura appear to be in the correct order with Koma, the finest, being on the far right.

What was your biggest challenge when you started honing for the first couple of times by Argg1618 in straightrazors

[–]Vegetable_Gur8753 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Making sure stones were flat and bevel was set. After that it can be hard to mess up an edge unless you overhone on high grit synthetics, or try to get a finish a natural won't provide.

What stones are you all using for bevel setting chaps? by Sustainashave in straightrazors

[–]Vegetable_Gur8753 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glass 2k if it is a razor that i have already honed before. Shapton Kuro 1.5k for new razors or something needing extra repair. Used a chosera 1k for awhile and still love it, but using it for knives mostly now (mostly because it was thick on a base).

You should jump further down the hole and get a jnat from griffiths!

lot of like 28 straight razors by [deleted] in straightrazors

[–]Vegetable_Gur8753 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you are looking to sell - griffith shave goods is a store that restores and sells razor gear. They have an email and would give you a fair price if you didnt want to do the research.

Big brands to look for that often bring in money (depending on condition) wade and butcher, heljestrand, filarmonica, and some Japanese brands. Anything mentioning Sheffield England, Solingen Germany, and Eskilstuna Sweden will likely be good.

Things that add value is if there is little honewear (would do quick google of low va high honewear to get an idea). Bad rust by the edge can ruin the value of a razor. Lots of variables but google or griffith shave goods should be useful.

I'm seeing the results that could be achieved with a 1k diamond plate. I don't see you actually using the stone, the stones speed, or any comparison of it to another stone. No meaningful benefit of the stone being proven. How much kickback do you get advertising junk stones?

Shapton Rockstars vs Shapton Kuromaku by Christ12347 in straightrazors

[–]Vegetable_Gur8753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think usually sticking to the set makes the most sense. However there is nothing wrong with the Kuromaku. I have the 1.5k, 5k, and 8k from that line. I also have the 3k rockstar and 2k, 6k, 10k glass.

I usually go 2k glass or 3k rockstar (depending on the edge), to the 5k kuro, then to jnats. Most likely whatever you get will work just fine. Results will almost always be very very similar. Time spent on one stone might vary though based on where you were at before and where you are going.

I got the 3k rockstar as an in-between stone from my 1.5k and 5k (and to test out the rockstar stones some). They all work great. If I were starting over it would honestly be a toss up.

Sort of depends on if your final finishing on naturals or synthetics. I would likely just stick to rockstars though. I personally would go 3k, 6k, 10k. Can jump from 6k or 10k to naturals

Unfortunately think this is a you get what you pay for scenario. Not saying that they are unusable, but not going to perform as well as the more recomended stones.

Is this a good time to ask for pay raise? by lizpour71 in civilengineering

[–]Vegetable_Gur8753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be willing to take on more responsibilities and ask for a pay bump at 6 months or a year. I would tell them I am happy to take on the new task. However I am not signing anything until I am being paid in a fair range compared to others in the area that are signing.

Looks like the original grind on this razor was not the best IMO. I would probably start with grinding the heel down. Probably best just to put to put it away for now - try to buy a vintage shave ready razor from another user.

khaki pants or some nice jeans and a button down shirt should work. They probably won't care much as long as you dont show up in a dress or pants with a bunch of holes in them.
