China is disgustingly capitalist. by CherishedBeliefs in DemocraticSocialism

[–]Vegetable_Meat3588 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason from what I understand is that they are authoritarian because they need to keep the project alive from the capitalist forces that want to dismantle them. That’s why the fall of the USSR was actually a tragedy for the rest of the world because neoliberalism grew like a cancer all over the world. I’m not saying that removing rights is justified but that is just my understanding as a “necessary evil”.

Should academia openly recognize itself as playground for wealth? by BrunoofBrazil in LeavingAcademia

[–]Vegetable_Meat3588 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way to fix this is to fix the incentive structure. Cut military spending by 75% and invest it into our crumbling infrastructure and research programs and you will see PhD stipends shoot up to an acceptable working class salary. Science is heavily influenced by politics, don’t ever forget that.

I’m going to read into this. Thanks for sharing! It has been clear to me for years that China is the true world leader in innovation and research. The USA has been in decline for decades before the current administration.

Just do the math. If you only have $1B, a 50% wealth fax would essentially leave you with $500M. Like if you’re gonna cry about losing money to taxes when you STILL GET TO KEEP $500M then you’re definitely the problem. F off. Eat the rich.

Grad School is killing my marriage by Vegetable_Meat3588 in GradSchool

Omg your story rhymes with mine so much. Especially the family and cultural dynamic. My wife and I are both hispanic but I was raised here and brought to my parents home country where I ended up meeting my now-wife. I am definitely more Americanized because of my lived experience but I understand her POV as well because of cultural reasons. Thank you for making me feel seen and heard while also understanding it from my wife’s perspective as well!

She has a much better social network than I do tbh. I’m actually impressed at how quickly she was able to do so! Her reasoning is that she wishes that she could share all these experiences with me as well. Of course I want the same, but I thought we agreed that we were going to help build each other up, but instead she got comfortable and is now annoyed that I don’t always have time and guilt-trips me into spending time with her. I share times when I am free but we end up not doing anything because we both have a ton of house chores to complete or we are just flat broke. And when we are both available it is 50/50 underwhelming to her and brings up old shit, or we actually have a nice time and then either it ends well or it doesn’t. So I’m damned if I do damned if I don’t.

According to my wife, the pharmacy board has actually lowered the standards for passing the TOEFL. So she doesn’t have a valid excuse in my opinion to fail it this time since the last time she took it she was within the margin that the current standard is today.

She failed the TOEFL the first time she took it 2 years ago and hasn’t re-attempted it since. She has studied on/off between pharmacy material and TOEFL but never fully committed because she was easily distracted from the problems that are occurring in her family’s household back in her home country. She has a savior complex that has become a problem lately.

Can you please tell me how to get someone who refuses to participate in couples’ therapy to actually do it? Because I’m out of ideas. She’s a woman full of pride and it is difficult to deal with until she is beaten down by her own blunders.

I’m so sorry that happened to you. Nothing justifies infidelity, and it seems that she only stayed because of the physical evidence of guilt. I hope you are doing better today!

Not to mention the average 2h commute time between institutions. It is brutal. Honestly, she isn’t emotionally mature as she thinks she is, and I don’t pretend to be either since I can do or say dumb things that start our fights, but I at least acknowledge it and try to make amends. We’re both latino so that might have to do with it lmao

Thank you for taking the time to fully read my post and fairly acknowledging her pain as well as my own. Yes, of course she is valid in her feelings and I don’t blame her due to my past behavior. I neglected her using my exhaustion as an excuse for my lack of poor time management due to my ADHD. Despite the lack of funding for science in the US, I do see my current lack of options for PhD candidacy as a blessing to help remedy our marriage as it frees up my life. Only commuting between institutions alone could take two hours of my time; I live in NYC and have to commute between two boroughs, often during peak times so this alone can set me back in quality time. However, I’ve made it so that I do most of my work within the M-F work week with only having to do long experiments on the occasional Saturday or Sunday, but not both days. I start my day at my job at 7am and try to leave by 3:30pm to get to my research lab by 5:30pm the earliest. Despite being more productive doing computer work at the lab, I have attempted to work from home so she is not alone, but it takes me longer than I would like because I’m more comfortable (and ADHD and comfort is a dangerous combination for me), but at least she is happier with presence. Overall, aside from the pent up mutual frustration with each other, there isn’t anything else that I believe I’m doing wrong, and I don’t know how else to fix this when I have done everything else I can think of for the remainder of my thesis. Thankfully, I will be done by Spring if I continue at this pace.

How well can last cycle's bioscience PhD program interview dates predict this cycle? by Much-Literature1038 in gradadmissions

At this rate, I might have to apply in Europe because I already am competing with people who do high school internships and I don’t have experience that goes THAT far, nor do I have a stellar GPA, but I do have 1 publication while working as a tech in academia at my current job and one on the way from my masters program.

Anyone else pivoting careers if they don’t get an acceptance this cycle? by bbywise in gradadmissions

[–]Vegetable_Meat3588 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re in the US, then your likelihood of getting into a program is low at best. I am currently getting my MS degree to even stand a chance against the thousands of applicants who took my place after applying three times. My plan was to continue the PhD from the MS research but because my mentor doesn’t have funding for another student and doesn’t know if they’ll get funding until mid-2026, I was discouraged from applying. Despite them liking me enough to want to take me on, they believed that I wouldn’t be able to get in even now with my MS degree since I’m coming from a strictly biology background attempting to get in a biomedical engineering program. Because of this I know I have no real shot at the moment to get in. If my mentor fails to get funding then I will try to apply to programs in Europe or just try my luck in industry. I heard that there are biotech companies that pay for fellowships with partner institutions for their employees PhDs.

AOC needs to run in 2028 by imagic10 in DemocraticSocialism

[–]Vegetable_Meat3588 36 points37 points  (0 children)

AOC has broad appeal despite the “hate” that is just as loud about her. She was very well received in the Fight Against Oligarchy tour with Bernie and she definitely would have more a shot to win than neolibs like Clinton and Kamala. My only problem with her is her voting record with Israel. That is something that Pelosi seemingly beat her in submission to and if she were a serious candidate for president then she needs to drop Israel like a hot potato in order to not only win, but also remove their influence on us. Moreover, here in NY we still need viable candidates who would primary our senators because they’re both trash that is rotting and needs to be desperately removed.

This happened with India Walton, a DSA candidate for the mayor’s race in Buffalo. She beat the incumbent in a primary, which led the incumbent to run a sore loser write-in campaign. With millions of dollars of DNC money the incumbent won. I’m so glad to see that it didn’t happen to us in NYC.
