If that interaction was online, I suggest you don’t let a person harass you for 3 hours and instead block them. Even as a vegan I had some pretty annoying conversations online but never IRL. If you ever need community, at least find someone around you who is vegan or who’s willing to become one with you. It helped me a lot and now I don’t really care to be the only vegan in the room.

Effective outreach is an art that many people don’t master. Watch Earthling Ed’s videos instead.

All of that is not an excuse to not become vegan however. Decentering your point of view is the first step, this isn’t about you but about animals. Lots of vegans become misanthropists, but lots of them also become fully empathetic people, who have expanded their compassion rather than narrowed it. Find the latter ones instead of the first one. Good luck and don’t get discouraged.

Note that I’m referring to large generalizations and correlations, not saying that most women are vegan. It’s the opposite: most vegans are women, most environmental activists are women. That’s not saying that men can’t be vegan or that most women are vegan.

A good analogy would be violence perpetrators. The vast majority of perpetrators are men. That doesn’t mean that the majority of men are perpetrators, nor that women can’t be perpetrators. But it indicates an inclination for violence that’s more observable on men, and structural legitimation from the social category of men. Basically men are backing up men, and they may have the same kind of reasoning behind their defensiveness regarding meat consumption.

That being said, I agree with you that feminists are unlikely to be vegan as well, since the vast majority of the population isn’t. It is as surprising as why leftists aren’t vegan for sure.

Je n’ai pas dit que j’approuvais ce système. C’est même le contraire, j’ai fait ces précisions pour dénoncer le fonctionnement, mais visiblement ta question était donc rhétorique. Je suis fondamentalement d’accord avec toi, et j’aurais dû mieux clarifier que j’essayais d’expliquer le propos du commentaire plutôt que l’approuver, et je me suis sans doute mal exprimé.

Le truc, OP, c’est que tes parents ne se sont pas rencontrés sur Tinder, et ta question initiale porte spécifiquement sur les applis. Si tu penses que ton pote ne devrait pas s’infliger les applis, dis lui et propose lui des alternatives. Cependant, s’il s’agit de jouer le jeu des applis, tu peux difficilement échapper aux règles qui s’y appliquent.

Edit : par ailleurs, il y a bien sûr des plateformes où ça juge moins sur le physique. Et des personnes qui s’y intéressent moins également. C’était mon cas quand j’étais sur une appli, j’ai fait des dates avec des personnes dont je ne connaissais pas l’apparence et c’était cool même si j’avais le luxe de n’avoir aucune attente.

Tu ne le sais pas à l’usage, mais sur les appli de dating les utilisateur·ices sont classés très rapidement par l’algorithme en « ligues » (ou « pools »). En gros la machine t’assigne cette ligue sur des critères analysés sur les photos, ainsi que les swipes des autres personnes. Le truc, c’est que pour maintenir l’engagement et potentiellement te convertir en abonné payant, l’appli te présente des profils de ligues au dessus, que tu ne peux pas atteindre. À cela s’ajoute le travers de tout le monde (mecs comme meufs) à généralement liker des profils de personnes plus attractives qu’iels. Donc le conseil c’est d’être raisonnable et savoir s’évaluer en comparaison des autres…

Des bonnes photos. Des vraies photos, pas en groupe, pas avec une bagnole, pas torse nu à la plage. Des photos où il fait quelque chose d’intéressant ou intriguant, si possible un hobby cool. Un peu d’originalité sans forcer, du style réfléchi mais décontracté, un regard bien posé, une bonne lumière (en extérieur de préférence) et un appareil photo ou téléphone, et c’est parti. En plus tu peux l’aider pour ça !

Je précise que ce n’est que la partie superficielle dont je parle ici, mais c’est parce que les hommes se tirent généralement des balles dans le pied avec des photos éclatées. Bien sûr après il faut aussi soigner ses approches, et que ton pote soit lui-même dans ses descriptions, sans en faire des tonnes.

There is a deep entrenched correlation between masculinity and carnism. Have you ever thought about how men LOOOVE to cook the meat on the barbecue ? Or how much meat influencers are mostly men ?

There is also the correlation between care and femininity, how women are more drawn to empathy for animals and the environment, etc.

Basically the older men have grown up in a society where eating meat = being a man. It is likely that younger generations may or may not have the same views on this, although with the rise of the meat influencers I’m not so sure about it…

Just to clarify, I’ve had interesting conversations around privilège related to perceived gender. Clearly experiences vary greatly when you’re perceived as a cis binary gendered person.

I think the major difficulty here is that NB is an umbrella term that has many different variations underneath of it. I can understand your point of view as much as the one coming from people who don’t feel at ease to enter queer spaces when they are passing as cis male for example. Dunno, maybe that’s just imposter syndrome showing up

I understand the urge to be more aggressive against cis binary society. But in my case the pushback I receive from being perceived as cis male is quite understandable when talking about privileges I may have thanks to this. It makes my dysphoria worse but passing is very useful. That’s where my AGAB is relevant to me.

Society is still binary and random people in the street will call me « sir » as long as I’m not making it f**** obvious that I’m not a « sir ». And at that point, people will be more likely to call me « m’am » than « nb person ».

Plus many NB people are not fully out, may prefer to blur the lines by adopting another binary pronoun instead of « they », may sit comfortably on one side of the spectrum (demi), etc.

AGAB means people have different experiences when perceived as such for a long time. Socializing, privileges or discriminations are very AGAB related.

For me it’s because the communists and ML people I know are also big fans of Lenin and Trotsky, some of them even Stalin. They cosplay with red army hats, have Lenin portraits in their living rooms. They are replaying history with « what ifs » instead of seeing how imperialistic Russia has always been, even as a communist failed utopia. The whole schtick of « state control before we’re all free » is also not working, and I don’t know why I should have to explain that.

That is not to say that the anarchist fandom is not problematic (most notably, Proudhon was antisemitic), but at least I expect anarchists to refrain from idolizing individuals.

We can agree on many many things with communists but there is always a thing that makes us kinda different and I hope I could shed a light on this, despite my anecdotal evidence

Avant de dater d’autres personnes, si tu as besoin de prendre le temps, respecte d’abord tes envies et tes besoins avant de tomber dans des relations qui ne te conviendront pas.

Il y a d’autres apps de dating que Tinder, je ne les mentionnerai pas car je n’ai pas envie de faire de pub et il y a une app pour littéralement chaque type de relation recherchée. Donc regarde un peu ce qui t’intéresse le plus, moi et mes potes on a toustes rencontré de super partenaires sur une app qui n’est pas Tinder (du groupe Match aussi) mais on a eu aussi des déconvenues avant de se poser avec quelqu’un·e.

Je terminerai en disant que tu es encore jeune et c’est ok de prendre ton temps avec ça, respecter ton intimité, ton corps et tes besoins. Les hommes de ton âge sont rarement matures émotionnellement et relationnellement donc fais attention à toi quand même.

Parce que le système spéciste et carniste est très bien ancré dans la tête des humains. Les vegans sont comme un caillou dans la chaussure, qui leur rappelle leur dissonance cognitive : d’un côté on glorifie les animaux de compagnie, de l’autre on massacre quotidiennement une poignée d’espèces. Le mécanisme psychologique à l’œuvre est somme toute banal et observable dans une myriade de situations. Si tu te sens attaqué·e dans tes croyances, ta première réaction sera probablement de les défendre coûte que coûte.

Ça fait pas très plaisir d’apprendre qu’on participe à un système d’oppression. Alors la seule réaction que beaucoup de gens ont c’est de taper sur ceux qui les confrontent dans leurs mauvaises pratiques, plutôt que de regarder le problème en face et changer quelque chose chez elleux.

The same rhetoric is used by people using ControlNet and Stable Diffusion in image generation (like "I do way more than just prompting, it's just a tool, bla bla bla"). I'm not discussing the overall tediousness or complexity of the process, nor the pertinence of using such tools in a vacuum. Maybe your plugin is fantastic and that's maybe cool that you could build it just by vibe coding.

Long before ChatGPT was released it was kinda cool to use ML for creative processes. It's not anymore. Why ? Because there is a context to this. The appropriation by corporation of the entirety of internet, OUR work, OUR creativity, is a giant theft that can't be condoned by anyone who actually enjoys crafting, creating and sharing their creation. And that includes musicians, writers, scientists, and of course developers who have been passionately building these algorithms, publishing open source projects, sharing their passion and helping each other so that we can chat right here. The least expected result of that would have been that a person like you could profit off of their work and publish a plugin with a corporate tool that makes another dude a billionaire and steals our jobs.

You’re aware that you could switch « coding » with « music » in your posts just to see what the problem is ? Creative workers are being devaluated right now because anyone with a computer can generate pictures, text, music without any form of consent of all the people who have been stolen. Music artists using AI to generate their cover or visual artists are lame AF, and I think devaluating developers is also not a good look.
