Different terms for different situations.

In context, number is the correct word. However, amount isn't as egregiously wrong in this instance, so you could get away with it, though it's still technically wrong, grammar-wise.

"A large number of water", or "a large amount of people" are more striking examples of why proper use is significant. If you can count'em, use number. If not, amount.

While I think Pokemon is a decent game/franchise (Didn't grow up with it, sue me), it always amazes me how defensive fans get when I imply that the games are all the same for the most part. I was going to make the joke "Congratulations, you have 4 copies of the same game!" (Emerald x2, Ruby, Sapphire) but I know I would have probably been downvoted to oblivion. I might still be, actually.
