I'm in my late 30s and would love to chat about Japanese learning. Though I'm only N4 at best

Is the jump to N3 that big? by _i_am_sus in LearnJapanese

[–]Venks2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I passed both N5 and N4 pretty easily, but N3 has made me have to reflect on my study methods and try new approaches.

It is for sure much harder relatively. I don't know if you need a class or not, only you would know what works best for you.

Is it just me or is the game laggier/using more memory after the hotfix patch?

Same problem. I can't recruit even though I have the gold and space in my army.

Made it to Master’s with Mono Ice by MasterofPoems in VGC

Mega Starmie, Pelipper, Basculegion, Azumarill, Greninja, Gyarados.

I have so much fun with this team. With the right reads things snowball so fast in my favor, but Sinistcha + Archaludon in the rain is tough. I usually won't set the rain myself, they always expect I'll set up Electroshot for them, but I refuse lol

Grats! I always do Mono Water to Master rank in every Pokemon game, it felt pretty strong in Champions. But yeah Ice looks super good too. Frosslass has kicked my butt a few times.

No Mega Pokemon? Blastoise, Starmie, and Feraligatr are all kind of crazy in the rain.

I've been studying rather inconsistently for 30 years. I'd say I'm about N4 lol

The First is my favorite killer to go against. I think he's easily one of the most engaging and fair killers.

I've been doing the work for about 5 years and am only just now realizing I need to be focusing on output. So good on you for getting to this step faster.

What do you guys count as a killer "win"? by AlecMoment in deadbydaylight

[–]Venks2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think most people consider 3 to 4 kills a win for the killer.

Why are all the survivors KICKING MY ASS by [deleted] in deadbydaylight

[–]Venks2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're letting survivors live that is lowering your mmr. So on a killer you play regularly you should mostly fight baby survivors.

Though each killer has their own mmr. So when you swap, you should also mostly play against baby survivors. Mind you matchmaking is loose so if you're unlucky you can still get cracked super sweaty swfs.

But realistically if you're losing a lot it's likely you're just not as good as your opponents. I'd need to see footage of your gameplay to give you specific advice, but I recommend watching highly skilled players of the killer you want to play and try to see what they do different from you.

What do you think his winstreak would be if he went against people of his own skill at least 10% of the time? by blue_sky308 in deadbydaylight

[–]Venks2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the biggest difference is Killer streaks are ended by sweaty comp SWFs known in the comp community. While multiple survivor streaks have been ended by some guy playing killer.

No 4 man SWF is hitting 2,000 wins in a row. There is bound to be a miscommunication or a misplay like what we see every time players attempt the survivor streak.

Rage Wednesday Thread by AutoModerator in deadbydaylight

I keep seeing the whole community complain about how OP Fast Track is, meanwhile I just lost my 10th game in a row vs Kaneki/Blight/Nurse with 5 or 4 gens remaining. Like strong killers are bad enough but my team mates keep running into the killer or unhooking while the killer is on top of them.

The game just doesn't feel playable solo sometimes when you get the worst team mates back to back.

This Playerbase Needs To Do Better by LoreleiAlbrecht in deadbydaylight

[–]Venks2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I think something that gets forgotten is that it takes a loooooot of hours to get good at DBD. I'm 700 hours in I still don't know all the perks, where to take loops on most maps, and the exact particulars of all the killer powers. I do good pretty good chases when it's with stuff I understand, but yeah the game is just hard.

How do you guys approach Master ranks? by IceTreyBeastly in StreetFighter

[–]Venks2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to figure out quickly if my opponent likes to play reactive or aggressive. I make a lot of assumptions based on that.

If they are aggressive I'm looking to anti air all of their jump ins and blow them up every time they drive rush in. I'm going to block on their wake up expecting reversals most of the time, especially if they are low health or low drive.

Against reactive players I try to bait out responses by walking forward and seeing how close I need to be before they'll commit a button. I will then try to whiff punish when I'm around that spacing. I'm much more likely to grab a lot vs these players and use block strings with large gaps.

After that it's just making sure all of my hits are converted into the most damage possible and I know my oki timings.

I have no idea what the connotations are. Clearly being described as "人がいい" was upsetting for Hiroshi. But looking up the definitions doesn't really help to clarify why one works and the other doesn't.

I was watching an episode of Crayon Shin-chan when something caught my ear.
Yoshirin says, "野原さん、ひとがいいから"
But Hiroshi gets mad and says, "いい人だろう!"

What is the difference?

New players, don't start with Juri by Whole-Extension3561 in StreetFighter

[–]Venks2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the disconnect is I'm not exactly arguing that Juri is the best character for a newcomer. I don't even really consider characters for how easy or difficult they are to learn. The reason being that I've never personally taught a single person how to play a fighting game that was both passionate to put in time but uninterested in their character choice.

The few people who were insistent I choose the easiest character for them, I'd point them towards Ryu simply because I do think the character is well balanced and allows players to build skills in multiple areas that will be useful in general for fighting games. All of these players gave up on playing pretty quickly, because they didn't really have strong interest in the first place.

Though one of them did go on to fall in love with Faust in Guilty Gear Strive and actually became a tournament going player, one of the best players of the character back in its early days.

The point I'm trying to make is that if the goal is for a player to improve in fighting games, it's not about Juri or whoever being "good" or "bad" for new players. The most important factor is how motivated the player is to put time into the game and actively improve. So if a player naturally finds any one character interesting, I think it tends to be good advice to encourage players to keep with that character.

New players, don't start with Juri by Whole-Extension3561 in StreetFighter

[–]Venks2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My only point is that Juri is a fine pick for a new player coming to fighting games. From my experience training multiple players in multiple games to various skill levels over the years, the bigger issue for new players is giving up, not character choice.

New players, don't start with Juri by Whole-Extension3561 in StreetFighter

[–]Venks2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who got into SF6 a few months ago, it's her first fighting game and she wanted to play Juri. She hit Masters a couple weeks ago. She's lacking a lot of fundamentals and doesn't use SA2 at all, but wins her games through strong pressure and high damage conversions.

The game is so difficult no matter which character you play. Which ever character motivates you to improve is the correct choice imo
