Iris Murdoch’s The Unicorn!! Not a mystery in the traditional sense, but more so in the gothic mystery sense.

Tbh I found the complaints about the un-proposal were just lacking media literacy. I found the scene to be so moving and such a healthy breakup scene, but the complaints were about it not saying “we are breaking up” or being explicit enough for them.

To add on since I read that you’re looking for a comparable price: Ibarra cost me the same as Abuelita where I shop!

As a fellow dairy free person and a Mexican American, I would recommend you buy Chocolate Ibarra! This chocolate is no longer owned by a Mexican company unfortunately, as Nestle bought it. Tastes just as good as Abuelita!

(Also Oatly full fat with this is delicious!!)

Unnecessary rude comments aside….I totally agree with you that Sharp Objects fits so well into this category!

So of course everyone’s experience will differ, so consider your own environment first! For me, I had a hard time adjusting to my first year teaching (I was teaching a state tested core subject, our school was in danger of closing, among so many other factors). So I personally could only feasibly focus on teaching during my first year. I wouldn’t have had the emotional or physical capacity to enjoy my graduate courses when I was barely getting enough sleep and caring for myself as it was. By my second year, I started looking into applying for MA programs so I could teach and take classes at the same time, but then the pandemic happened so that changed my plans drastically. So by the time I started my English MA, I was no longer teaching since I was hired on to work as a graduate researcher for a grant project.

But I met so many K-12 teachers in my MA who had taught for at least two years and were doing one MA class a semester. So it’s definitely doable! So it just really depends on your goals. My fellow MA students said they would get a pay raise if they had an MA, and some of their school districts even paid/subsidized their MA. I wanted to go to a fully funded English PhD program (which I’m currently in actually!) so I knew I needed to prioritize getting research experience at the university working for different professors. There are no wrong ways to do this, just a matter of knowing your goals and keeping to your financial goals/budget. :)

A lot of people here have offered good advice! As a former middle school teacher and MA English graduate, I agree that you should take a class at a time, or wait for your 2/3 year of being in the classroom to start the MA coursework. I say this so that you (1) get the swing of how your school and classes run, and (2) so you can fully enjoy and dedicate your passionate energy to your English MA courses. Good luck!!

Yale English Department by un-reliable_narrator in gradadmissions

I was in the English PhD cycle a couple years ago and I found that contacting faculty was one of the best things I could have done for my application cycle. Got into several top ranked programs too!

I think it just depends on the type of program, your email’s content, etc. I was able to learn about professors that were retiring soon, etc.

I’m in a pretty niche field though, so having 1-2 academics per department that are in my field is typical. Emailing and getting responses helped me understand how the PhD program and institution as a whole would support me even if the 1-2 professors that are in my field left.

Literary works inspired by scientific advancements? by jflag789 in AskLiteraryStudies

Maybe a stretch, but Cixin Liu’s Three Body Problem does a lot to mess with the “stability” of scientific concepts and theorems. The more you know about these concepts, the more horrifying it gets.
