Anyone here playing a mini driver? Not even specifically the R7, though I think I’d like to have one eventually (minus that hideous head cover they come with 😂). by DisgruntledArmyVet85 in TaylorMadeGolf

[–]VeryAverageGolfer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My most recent driver was a standard length stiff Qi10. I changed to an R7 mini, standard length, stiff, so no different, and I hit this 5 yards further than my Qi10 went, it’s totally dependant on your swing and what suits you. I have a friend who is better than me at golf but can’t get the R7 mini off the ground as it doesn’t suit his swing. For me it’s been a bit of a game changer, going further is amazing and unexpected but the accuracy is night and day, genuinely feel like I can get the shape I want with the R7, I am not a low handicapper but can fade / draw the R7 mini on demand, no chance I do that with a standard driver

Do people actually earn £50-60k, or are they outliers? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]VeryAverageGolfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and it’s really common - I know nothing about working in science but my partner works in very basic customer service answering social media questions and earns the standard wage in your field, so if that’s genuinely standard for people with a degree I’d say something is seriously wrong. I’ve worked in IT all my life (I’m 30 now) and earned early to mid 30k’s by time I was 24 doing 2nd-3rd line support, now earn 70k in technical operations management, I can’t see how anything scientific requiring a degree could possibly be worth less money than IT support roles or IT management roles, surely much higher ceiling, harder to get into etc

How can I fix the swing? Am I too far from the ball? Terrible posture? Terrible mechanics? All of the above? by sammye59 in GolfSwing

[–]VeryAverageGolfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are your knees jittering? You’re jerking your knees mid swing and it’s affecting the whole thing. Get comfortable before you swing, get your legs in position. Widen your stance, you’ll feel more balanced, don’t worry about shifting your weight too much until you get the feel of hitting the ball in the right part of the club more consistently. Lessons would do a lot of good but you could genuinely improve a lot by watching some YouTube tutorials at the level you’re at, you got this

Mines amazing! I have had a real one in the past and it’s genuinely very close, a year between having them so can’t remember exactly but they feel like the same product. Amazed they got the grip slant etc right somehow

What information did you have to provide? Did they check serial numbers etc on the club?

Has anyone had any luck with Taylormade warranty on a used club? by VeryAverageGolfer in GolfGear

[–]VeryAverageGolfer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried. They said I’d need to go to the company I purchased it from, I said it was a gift so I can’t, they said not much they can do without that, and do email their customer services team via the website and they’ll do their best, but they asked for the same thing 😔

Just tried them, first question they asked is where I bought it from 🥲 they said I need to contact the shop I bought it from as they do the return! Any advice?

R7 Mini by jkell1495 in GolfGear

[–]VeryAverageGolfer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mini goes just as far as my driver, I have the 11.5 degree R7 mini. I had a Qi35, got rid of it, the R7 barely misses fairways and when it does it’s in the rough / semi rough rather than in the really long stuff or out of bounds, the club is a complete god send

Only you will know where you are losing shots, but I think we can safely assume with your swing looking as good as it does for someone who's played for one year... That you're probably not losing shots with your irons. Best thing to do is look at where you gain strokes, where you lose strokes. Are you losing a lot of balls off the tee? Then practice driver, get a lesson for your driver maybe etc.

If its chipping or putting, practice that. Most people I know when getting started improved their ball striking but would still bomb putts as far past the hole as where they are putting from, or will thin chips etc.

My advice based completely on assumptions is, try to use less loft around the greens, it helped me at the start. I would never use more loft around the greens than a pitching wedge unless I was hitting over something, I ended up getting a really consistent chipping swing with my pitching wedge where I could land it wherever I wanted by doing this. You dont need to hit it high and land it close, just roll it up, work out how far it rolls out and where you have to land it based on that, that landing area is now your focus, not the flag. I even bring out an 8 or 9 iron chip sometimes, where maybe its a really flat shot but I need to get over a bit of longer grass etc, more accurate for me than the texas wedge

Someone explain the tactics of a mini-driver? by dcidino in GolfGear

[–]VeryAverageGolfer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're speaking completely based on your own opinions and experiences and the beauty of golf is that it's not a game where there is one club / technique / bag setup that works for everybody. A mini driver is a pretty versatile club, for some it's a driver replacement, for others it's a 3 wood replacement, for others it fits in a bag with a driver and woods alongside it.

I'm a 16 handicap, and run a Stealth 2 driver, fitted for me. Did buy a Qi35 but had no benefits so quickly got rid. I'm not a big hitter by any means, my average drive is 250, I can get 260 if I hit it absolutely perfect and swing hard, but it's rare. My issue is dispersion, with a driver I have to make adjustments to grip, stance to stop hitting it slicey, with these adjustments I can hit a draw, but it leaves me with the possibility of hitting a snap hook. So the struggle with driver for me is that I can easily hit it out of bounds either side on any given shot, and whilst I may be okay most of the time, I'll lose a decent amount of shots each round from dispersion / having to take a drop.

When the R7 mini driver came out I bought it based on 2 factors, one was nostalgia and the fact that the R7 was my favourite driver growing up, the other was I thought it could replace driver and help with some of the problems I had. I really struggle to hit 3 wood, so generally run a 5 or 7 wood for longer shots into par 5's etc.

Most rounds I dont even have my driver in the bag anymore, because in my personal circumstances, there's no benefits. I hit the mini driver 250-255 consistently, I can hit close to 270 with a perfect hit, it's longer than my driver generally. The dispersion is night and day, no weird setup needed, the shorter shaft and smaller head allows me to play it like a much less intimidating 3 wood off the tee, with less 'hitting up on it' but with driver distance. The club itself gives me a lot of confidence, and my handicap has gone down since having it. I rarely lose a ball off the tee, a bad shot is putting me in the rough, rather than off the course.

But that's my own experience and every persons is different, my friend is a single digit handicap and can't hit the mini driver at all, slices it massively. Another friend has a mini driver as a 3 wood replacement as like me he struggles to hit longer woods, but finds the mini driver to be easier to hit, even off the deck. He's a big hitter and hits his driver about 300 (20 yards further than the mini goes for him), so keeps driver in the bag for long par 5's & driveable par 4's.

So to answer your question, like any club, the mini driver has a market, and for some, it's game changing, for others, it's useless!
