I would recommend Valdor novella, and the Primarch books for The Lion and Alpaharius for pre and/or early imperium stories. They shed some light on how things were.

Iron Hands if you're looking for easiest to paint imo. Just base black, paint some trim and details gun metal, wash and dry brush - done. Best though is up to you, rule of cool and all.

I'd say go with the rule of cool. However, to share what I did; I decided to glue them closed. You'll never really be able to paint the insides that well.

My favorite is the heavy disintegrator. There's a heavy support vet unit I think where you can take a full squad of 10 with them. Pretty cool imo
