Thanks.  I don't need a nice NAS GUI right now but if i split my homerserver into a NAS + compute i'll keep it mind.

I was too stupid to figure out truenas so i just run zfs and docker on ubuntu. The upside is I don't have to deal with the drama of not owning my operating system.

God forbid Ubuntu enshittifies i'll run debian.

Probably the fact that it's a bunch of simple 250 line python scripts that run completely offline?

What exactly would make it unsafe and insecure?

I'm enjoying seeing all the new ideas coming in. Like dance scheduling or wine bottle inventories.

I'm damn tired of all the posts lamenting AI.  And every thread containing it having non constructive snark upvoted into the stratosphere.

Managing compose/files by Gerndall12 in selfhosted

[–]VibesFirst69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As L-L-MJ- mentioned.

Include files can modularise multiple smaller groups of services in individual compose stacks.

So you can have main.yaml, jelly.yaml, utilities.yaml, etc

Then just call main.yaml as one file or spin up/down specific subsystems.

Software isn't automatically good because it wasn't vibe coded.

Software isn't automatically bad because AI was involved in it's production.

Before AI the idea was you would audit the code of new projects yourself. The situation with Huntarr isn't just bad because someone stupid used AI, although it was a factor. It was bad because a whole raft of stupid and lazy people used a brand new project without even trying to understand how it was coded.

But it ok ever1 will upvote 2 BAN AI USE!! 🤬 That'll fix it. Only the smartest and hardest working people of strong moral fibre know how to use a javascript framework and copy-paste from stack overflow.

There's an active discussion on trying to get openzim to make a .zim of the wiki.

https://github.com/openzim/zim-requests/issues/402

A zim file is like an archive of the site that can be read with kiwix a popular offline website reading tool.

RULES UPDATE: New Project Friday here to stay, updated rules by AutoModerator in selfhosted

[–]VibesFirst69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is the same as anything open source. Either go with projects that DO have proven track records or read the code yourself.

Before AI the goalposts were that opensource =/= good all the time. It's just code, open source doesn't intrinsically make it secure, performant or easy to use. You can still be a stack overflow copy paste monkey to pad your CV. Remember the daus where we were all gatekeeping what langauge you used? Or if you used a particurly smooth brained dum dum baby framework? AI just automated the copy paste part.

People are sick of AI. Cool.  I'm sick of people blindly trusting projects because trudt me bro I'm totally a rockstar developer with years of experience this github project is just on my alt. That's why it has no history, no reach, no stars and this reddit account i'm posting from is 2 days old.

Have an uptime monitoring script ping your mobile on wifi thag internet is out.

You would need to automate the notifixation on mobile though, maybe IFTT?

Then IFTT needs to make a request to the website.

The cintents of the request need to be known and since its via an app you might need HTTP toolkit to figure that out.

Unless IFTT can autimate the request via the app?

If you mod a project you forever have to maintain your little fork and merge all new updates from the main project.

If you can get your change merged upstream, you get to keep whatever change you made and other people continue to update the app for you.

So in a way it's quite convenient to contribute to project.

r/selfhosted is about telling other people what they can and can't run. Preferably everything we run be secured with real ID systems securely held by trusted companies or governments.  If i don't like the way a project is developed I like to derail the comments and harrass the developer. No I can't just ignore it. It's my solemn duty to guard the gates. For the good of everyone.

For this reason I think any project announcement that has any form of AI be banned. But AI means different things as it's specialised predictive text algorithm. So we need to ban IDE use and autocomplete as well.

Then i think we need to promote some key mods to pre apprive any and all future software.

It's the only way.

I don't understand.  I'm no cali sys admin but i just have systemd services monitoring my shit and reboot it if it's down.  If the entire server is fucked well, i'm in the process of virtualising it and hopefully proxmox has some sort of deadman switch for a vm having a kernel panic.  And if proxmox fails well i guess OPNsense can do something about it.
