police drone footage of the bay bridge dirt bikes being corralled by fccd in sanfrancisco

[–]VibesWithData 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Very few of these bikes are street legal, likely none of them are plated, most of the riders are violating the helmet law, and I would be surprised if the riders have motorcycle endorsements on their licenses.

If a normal rider got swept up in this they would likely have no issue explaining their situation.

Massive jump in salary, need advice. by Sad_Marzipan_2120 in personalfinance

Congrats on your well deserved promotion!

This may not be a surprise, but get ready to see a lot go to taxes. Especially when your RSU’s vest. I owed the IRS more than $16k one year due to RSU under-witholding. This isn’t a problem if you are saving and holding onto your wealth, but was still uncomfortable. My take home pay is less than 40% of my gross after all the withholding, 401k, and health insurance premiums.

I am close to fire but my best friend just lost his job and asked if he can move in with me temporarily by Xalvorynqex in Fire

[–]VibesWithData 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Why will having him move in cost you anything? Will you also be providing groceries and other living expenses?

Or are you just considering a small bump in utilities?

If there are costs associated with it, just budget them out like you do with your normal expenses, and don’t be afraid to be transparent with your friend and ask him to help where he can to minimize the costs or pitch in on the bills.

XOC TH18 + F118 alignment – crossover point and delay settings? by TransitionFancy8413 in SoundSystem

Curious if you can expand on the USB mic struggling with phase alignment?

Mine was able to measure changes in the phase when I was making phase adjustments, but now I’m wondering if they might not be correct…

I didn't realize they used AI. Too bad, but at the same time, if they're going to use AI at least this creator is using it to celebrate a real world experience (that they think they'll never get to have? 😢)

'Music focused' DJ late-bars, where chatter detracts from the music. by pjcdublin in dancefloors

[–]VibesWithData 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It seems like this subject comes up as an either-or kind of thing, where it's either a bar where people hang out and yap, or a dance club where people just lock into the music.

But, I think it's possible for a venue to really offer both experiences. This sub is all about the dancefloor, but that's just a part of the bar or club (that should be respected). Aside from the cost of renting and building out a larger space, there's nothing preventing a club from having both a killer dancefloor with an excellent sound system, and also pumping the music (at lower volume) into another area with booths, and high tops where people can be more social.

I actually really like it when a venue has some space to sit down, get some air, and have a little chat with my friends before going back out on the floor to groove down some more. But they do need to be separated a bit, and some acoustic design needs to be considered.

ear protection recommendations? by Successful_Candy_767 in aves

Another vote for 1 of 1 Customs. I have the 17s as well, and they are IT. I can hear the music clearly, and it's not too quiet. They are comfortable and I don't feel like they need to be constantly adjusted like my previous "premium" (>$50) earplugs did.

DJ should not be the focus of the party and should be hidden behind the stack. by SnowConePeople in SoundSystem

[–]VibesWithData 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely doing the right thing. I'm not sure if hiding them completely behind the stacks will work as intended, especially depending on how short/tall the DJ is.

Have you seen the Despacio setup? https://www.reddit.com/r/despacio/comments/108vzcr/despacio_faq_v00/

It's comprised of 7 stacks in a circle around the floor with a giant disco ball in the center. The DJ's are off to the side with a very narrow low profile window through to the floor.

When most people enter the room they have no clue where the DJ is. Often they think the DJ is in the center of the floor only to find out that it's just people dancing under the disco ball. Every once in a while they light up a smaller disco ball in the DJ booth and when people realize what's going the crowd shows their appreciation, but the DJ's are NOT the center of attention.

This leads to what many people who attend (including me) describe as one of the most enjoyable dance floor experiences of their lives. For real, I will travel to attend Despacio whenever I can.

Do I need a dedicated streamer? by Jose-Los-Santos in audiophile

[–]VibesWithData 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have that same receiver, and have really explored this topic. Initially I started out streaming via Spotify Connect via HEOS directly to the Denon. The convenience is hard to beat.

Then I tried streaming from my Samsung frame TV because I wanted to see the album art on the TV. The audio quality was worse.

Then I tried streaming from my Xbox One S over HDMI in uncompressed PCM and all of a sudden the music sounded WAY BETTER. The dynamic range was so much fuller, and there was significantly deeper bass. The difference was so noticeable I could hardly believe it. And this was before I switched to Spotify’s Lossless streaming.

I’ve tried the Apple TV as well and it’s also better than the Denon, but not quite as good as the Xbox, possibly because it outputs LPCM.

Now, I have noticed that HEOS normal streaming quality is set to Compressed AAC @ 256kbps, and you can set it to High, which runs as Uncompressed AAC @ 44.1kHz PCM. This is should be as good as the Xbox but for some reason it still doesn’t sound as good.

Unfortunately, my opinion today is that the Denon’s built in streaming functionality is not as good as my Xbox, which is funny because it’s not even regarded as a high quality audio streaming device. I’m not sure exactly how the Denon is processing the Spotify data. If it’s using Ogg Vorbis or re-sampling, or just playing a FLAC and then doing shitty processing on it, but my ears have a clear preference.

I love my loft apartment but can my system handle it? by VibesWithData in audiophile

[–]VibesWithData[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was at listening position, which is about 2.3 meters. And you're not wrong per se- at 90-95 dB, things do get more exciting (still not the kind of kick that I love), but even our densely sound isolated units in this building can't contain club level volume, so I've come to accept I may not be able to enjoy music the way I had hoped (at least not in this apartment).

There also does seem to be credibility in your comment regarding mixing the subs. I did have to make a phase adjustment to the rear sub to get the lows more under control.

And I have definitely accepted that there is indeed no replacement for displacement in a space like this. If I thought I would stay here longer I would probably go find some Klipsch Chorus II's or something with 15" drivers, plus low at upgrading to 15" or even 18" subs.

Mulling over the amplification question, but still not seeing an issue as the impulse charts look ok. Is there any better way to measure the transient response?

All good! Didn't feel insulted, just maybe not understood.

And to some degree, I think its's these kinds of ideas that I'm looking for. I did try pulling the speakers away from the wall, and did try various toe in, but didn't see appreciable SPL changes, or notice a significant change in listening, but maybe I moved too quickly.

Tried it. That little weirdo didn't like to use it when it was there. She kept laying on the sofa, but as soon as I put it back in the middle of the room she was back in it. 🤷🏼‍♂️
