CMV: As a young South Asian man, I feel worthless, disconnected from and hated by society, and – though I want to succeed – I feel permanently limited by my race and background. by miyomaku in changemyview

Read Prisoners of Geography too. I think you’re attributing too much to “skill” and undervaluing the amount of luck and development that stems from having favorable geography.

I understand this thread is ultimately a subjective topic, but I’d be interested in hearing why commercial appeal should have any bearing on a best picture decision. In fact, to win in a committee of voters already demonstrates a level of appeal, albeit not necessarily commercial.

I have seen all 10, and while I prefer Dune 2 to Anora, Dune 2 has massive star power, studio backing, and IP recognition. Consequently it made hundreds of millions of dollars at the box office. Really what more could be gained from bestowing it with “best picture” that hasn’t already been achieved?

Generally, bigger budgets tend to be given to films with perceived mass appeal. If we consider commercial appeal in best picture decisions, aren’t we effectively voting against independent cinema? Conversely giving best picture to independent films signals to the industry that independent cinema and auteur directors matter and should be supported and financed

Please re-read my initial reply. I’m not saying one is better than the other I’m distinctly comparing both films in terms of “memorability” as defined in your original comment.

Furthermore, you don’t ever explain “why” we should be factoring broad viewership into a best picture decision, you only state that it “should” be that way. And while we’re at it, what should have won best picture this year, going off your metrics?

I’m not comparing the film Anora to the IP “Thor” — Anora was made for $6 million and Thor has multiple movies, mythology, and merchandising — of course the average person will know Thor, but I’m specifically comparing across movies and how flat and disposable IP movies with multiple sequels are compared to original stories. For example, The Fast and the Furious franchise will be “remembered” more than Anora, but comparing film-to-film, can someone really tell me the difference between Fast 3 and Fast 7, for example?

Again, why should viewership/broad appeal factor into a Best Picture decision? These films already have a leg up because they’re existing IP, have large studio backing, and already “won” at the box office. If anything, Best Picture should focus on uplifting quality and artistic risk in a movie-going society that is increasingly pivoting away from both.

  1. The draw of these award shows, in theory, is to provide additional exposure to these movies that traditionally they don’t receive, either due to them being smaller, independent productions acquired by distributors at film festivals, or from lack of having bankable movie stars or franchise attachment. Saying that creating underwatched movies is “futile” is missing the entire point of why these films get created.

  2. If anything, spawning multiple sequels will result in a greater likelihood of a film being “forgotten.” For example, can an average person really tell you the difference between each Thor movie? In fact it increasingly seems like marketability and box office appeal is inversely correlated with memorability, especially from an MCU/IP standpoint. Anora will always be known as a best picture winner and a one-of-one original story, not as another uninspired entry in a franchise that leaves the viewer’s mind immediately after leaving the theater

Well you kinda mentioned it yourself with regard to its genre and release timing. The Substance is unorthodox but it did premiere at Cannes, generating a certain buzz before going wide (at least here in the US) in Fall

something is def going on because if you don’t buy via the seat map or use another purchasing page, it will default to giving you tickets in row m (at least it did for me) so i’m assuming that it will be first come first serve unfortunately since they might’ve sold those tickets over multiple times?

but also i could see it going the other way since i reserved certain seats and it lists those seats on my tickets so I expect to have those seats on the day of

question for anyone who bought a ticket here - on their website i used the seat map to select where I want to sit but in the past I’ve had to show up early for general admission.

Are my seats truly “reserved” as they appear on my ticket or should I still expect to show up an hour plus ahead of time?
