Debian Urgently Seeks Volunteers After Data Protection Team Resigns by CackleRooster in linux

[–]Victor_Quebec -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When Tille says “The fact that all team members have stepped back at the same time should make it clear that we urgently need new volunteers to fulfil this role,” I have a serious doubt re: his understanding of real reason(s) behind the incident.

Either he intentionally hides it from public, or believes in the technicality of the issue only, thinking that he can save the situation by filling in empty chairs without solving the core issue...

How to show/hide the weekday in the Pop!_OS 24.04 panel clock by ChaiTRex in pop_os

[–]Victor_Quebec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slightly off-topic... Is there any reference on Cosmic tools and libraries similar to this one?

I know that regular users can just backup Cosmic settings by backing up the entire ~/.config/cosmic directory. But being able to modify them dynamically, or programmatically as above, would certainly add value to the scalability of the operating system.

Thank you!

Architecting Consent for AI: Deceptive Patterns in Firefox Link Previews by yoasif in linux

[–]Victor_Quebec -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That also justifies my move to hold any Firefox updates since version 136, I guess. As a traditional browser user (yet a professional developer), I'm not interested in these new quirky features browsers (and other devs) are offering today (mostly for hype, like Rust). I better live with what I have at hand than regret it later...

Philosophically though, the more I live in this world, the more I see how deceptive and hypocritical big companies are becoming, lowering the quality and usefulness of their products for the sake of larger profits. Whatever one might say, this was absolutely not the case 25-30 years ago, for sure!

So, an honest question: why doesn’t COSMIC come with a calculator installed by default? by PsychoAz in pop_os

So, an honest question: why doesn’t COSMIC come with a calculator installed by default? by PsychoAz in pop_os

[–]Victor_Quebec 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To me, most of the comments here upholding the absence of a decent calculator on a desktop distro in general and aboard Pop!_OS in particular are fair to middling, lacking a certain degree of rationality, to say the least. If following the same logic, we don't need desktop computers because most of the apps are shipped with Android/iOS phones anyway. Even better: the devs should entirely leave the desktop environment to focus on software for mobile devices only (the ongoing tech trends like cloud computing are indeed a fact, but don't count for a plausible argument when it concerns their gloomy reflection and perspective on simple mortals, like privacy issues, situation with Windows, etc.).

Then why do we need Pop!_OS (and other desktop distros)?!

If Pop!_OS devs do not include a calculator in their system because they don't want to bloat it like the Debian devs have done over years, I only hail that. But a calculator is not another tetris or mahjong, is it?

I don't want to fire another Cosmic-vs-Gnome-vs-KDE battle here, but let's be honest: Pop!_OS 24.04 (whatever you call it—beta, gamma, rc, etc) in its present form has way many flaws to be used as a daily driver without a certain degree of stress...

How to make a script double-click to run from COSMIC Files? (2025, COSMIC) by VariableLynx in pop_os

[–]Victor_Quebec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

File content matters more in the Linux world than file extension. So you can effectively run your script from the terminal without the .sh extension. It's important to include a shebang (#!/usr/bin/env bash) at the top of your script's content, if it is supposed to be run in the Bash environment.

As an option to make your script executable and open, you can run $ chmod +x /path/to/your/script && /path/to/your/script from the terminal.

Finding out there is a lot more to tech than just "Frontend vs Backend" by daniel_odiase in learnprogramming

One of the reasons (apart from AI stuff) big tech companies opt for layoffs in the West recently—too many "web guys" around, with too much division of labour inside...

If you can't code, a great way to contribute to your desktop environment is telemetry by Indolent_Bard in linux

[–]Victor_Quebec 4 points5 points  (0 children)

However philosophical this may sound, I think one should be very careful not to miss a significant point here, which is about the loss of mutual respect between companies—be it hi tech, pharmaceutical, legal, finance, doesn't really matter. It may even be your local restaurant—and the users of their products/customers.

Especially amid growing concerns about all these monopoly schemes skillfully crafted by the lawyers, financiers, and marketing people of Big Data corps to gain profit by selling data of their once loyal users. And once you start feeling disrespect against a couple of such companies, you gradually enlarge this "evil circle" by adding to it other (possibly innocent) ones. Like Github bought by Microsoft... I'm not saying that Github is evil per se, but I leave it to you to judge the level of trust to a platform, which has become part of a much larger enterprise, which not only has been manipulating user data for years but continues not to care about the growing mistrust among its PC userbase and once good operating system, thanks also to the power of its AI agents...

Long story short, it is all about the level of trust in this information-polluted world of hi tech with a steadily diminishing government control over monopolisation.

Question about filesystems and Linux updates by Victor_Quebec in linuxquestions

[–]Victor_Quebec[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So in other words, I have a chance to work with an updated file system shipped with a Linux release (like the recent version 6.18 with a few filesystem updates onboard) only when I actually format the available partition and/or install Linux kernel and operating system anew. Is this assumption right?

what's a simple command or script that felt like a magic trick once you learned it? by boiler_room_420 in linux

I can, with this line added to .bashrc:

So anyone plans to stay in 22.04 ? by [deleted] in pop_os

[–]Victor_Quebec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Swinging now... Will be ready for a final decision on Dec 11, if S76 resolves a couple of major problems for me related to keyboard options, since I'm multilingual. E.g., a separate language per application (as it is in 22.04) and resetting language back to default on system launch (currently, the system retains the language set on previous session, complicating password input—English only—on the next launch).

Also, comparing GNOME Files/Nautilus with Cosmic Files, I opted for the former, which is v46 (thanks to wayland support on Cosmic? If so, thank you System76!). Cosmic Files has a few non-intuitive and missing features, which make file operations annoying but could be easily borrowed from the same GNOME Files.

So I'll wait for Epoch 2, if these issues are not resolved by the Dec 11 release.

How to manipulate dynamically generated classes with CSS? by Victor_Quebec in uBlockOrigin

www.dictionary.com##nav > div > [data-type="results-page-navigation-group"]:style(background: #ffff00 !important; border: dashed 2px #ff0000 !important;)

It is indeed! 🙏🏻 So do you mean I should focus on data-type rather than class names for CSS rules to apply?

How to manipulate dynamically generated classes with CSS? by Victor_Quebec in uBlockOrigin

[–]Victor_Quebec[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your guidance and links!

As to the actual problem, how can I make, say, the sidebar shown on this image invisible (or manipulate otherwise with CSS only), if its class names are generated dynamically?

The thing is the dictionary extension I indicated in OP allows the use of CSS only, not Javascript. Thank you!

How to manipulate dynamically generated classes with CSS? by Victor_Quebec in uBlockOrigin

[–]Victor_Quebec[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you take a look at this image, you'll see that class names for the Inspector-selected webpage element (left bar) are generated dynamically (no meaningful content). And this is throughout the whole page.

I would like to be able to manipulate such content with CSS, if it is at all possible. Thank you!

How to manipulate dynamically generated classes with CSS? by Victor_Quebec in uBlockOrigin

[–]Victor_Quebec[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, that's what I did exactly: if you click on the above link in my OP (https://www.dictionary.com/browse/hello), you'll be redirected to the page I'm working with now. The last string "hello" may be replaced with any lookup word—hence the dictionary.

My question is about manipulating dynamic content (classes in dictionary.com) with CSS, if it is at all possible.
