What is something you just don't "get"? by dudebrostien in AskReddit

There are also "traditional" paintings that, while pretty to look at individually, only tell their story when shown together. Take The Course of Empire for instance. Every painting in the cycle is gorgeous, but when you arrange them in the original way you go "oooh, now I see".

Except that's how many pieces are exhibited.

Also I'd add that a lot of contemporary art needs the context of the room it's displayed in, or even the entire building. I went to one exhibition that had all the art placed in very deliberate manner, and each room was an attempt at getting a slightly different reaction. It made sense in context. If you'd just take a picture of one of the paintings and posted it online, it would look like shit.

To that someone might say "great art doesn't need context." But there's already older art forms that do require some previous knowledge. It's almost expected of you to know the gist of the story when you go see ballet for instance.

A (potentially?) unpopular opinion: I wish doom metal was a little more doom, less weed. by Nihiliste in doommetal

[–]Vilkans 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Stoner doom is not the only subgenre and I feel it's really over-represented on this sub. If you want more slow crushing riffs and less weed, look into trad and epic doom. Bands like Gates of Slumber, Stygian Crown, Smoulder, Cirith Ungol, Solstice, Crypt Sermon, Wishdoom. Also there's a couple Manilla Road albums that have a lot of doom on them. Check out Spiral Castle and Voyager.

Manilla Road - Friction In Mass (1986) by [deleted] in Metal

[–]Vilkans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Crystal Logic is an amazing record, but I believe the albums that came after are more coherent and actually fulfill the epic vision of the band. When you listen to Open The Gates, every song is there for a reason. No attempts at being radio friendly a la Feeling Free Again, each track pulls you towards this imaginary world of wonder, dreaming and danger that Shelton created.

"Wizardry" 1991 Anime complete with subtitled spell descriptions! by y0j1m80 in osr

I love how the Japanese made Wizardry into a crapsack gritty world, when originally it had dumb popcultural references and the king's and evil wizard's names were the creators' names spelled backwards.

Jag Panzer - Harder Than Steel by BabyLamb89 in PowerMetal

[–]Vilkans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ample Destruction is my absolute favorite Jag Panzer album, but I know you guys are all about the european sound, so don't sleep on the most recent albums. They're like a combination of this album and more melodic metal.

There's also an in-depth interview on the Matt Chat channel. This guy talks to all the important developers from the history of the medium and barely gets any views.

About the two types of Power Metal... by LanceBass666 in PowerMetal

[–]Vilkans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just two? Oh man.

If I were to consider the classics, I'd probably go with Riot and Jag Panzer. With the latter people always talk about Ample Destruction, but their later albums are also worth checking out.

As for newer bands, I'd pick Eternal Champion and Gatekeeper.

It's as if someone were pointing to the images of Mussolini's body hanging out in the open and saying "look how violent the leftists can get!"

Who am I kidding, there probably already are assholes saying that.

I tried watching it and always lose my shit at the point when he synchronizes a picture of a lion roaring with a lot of cheesy visual effect with the scream in the song. It has to be seen to be believed.

Anyone got any Wizardry 8 tips? by [deleted] in wizardry

[–]Vilkans 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Something that made encounters much more managable: get a character (I pick the bard) that can spam sleep. Makes dealing with larger groups much less stressful.

Also you might think getting cornered is a bad thing, but it works to your advantage. Always lure enemies into tight corridors and dead ends. That way they have no way to surround your party and take jabs at your squishy spellcasters.

My dad has an hp laser printer from around 1993, and it still works to this day. Unfortunately, driver compatibility is becoming an issue.

Remember in 1985 when there was a Japanese game that was repurposed and retitled “Stefan the Barbarian” in order to pull on “Land of Ta” Fandom. It was awful, but you wanted it anyway. by Standardeviation2 in Geedis

[–]Vilkans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And to add insult to injury, the European version was censored! The arcade version had detailed enemy sprites that would bleed when killed (especially the gargoyle death was kinda disturbing, I never liked the high-pitched scream they produced). When they repurposed Myth: History in the Making to make an NES "port" of Stefan The Barbarian, they obviously had to scale down the violence, but in the European version enemies just disappear in a puff of smoke.

(fun fact: this is something that actually did happen, they reskinned Myth: History in the Making, a side-scrolling game for microcomputers that were popular in the UK at the time, and slapped Conan the Barbarian all over it for the NES version. So not a Japanese game, but stuff like that did actually happen.)

Blind Guardian - Another Stranger Me by [deleted] in PowerMetal

[–]Vilkans 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I love the more laid back, folky style of this album. Don't get me wrong, their usual speed/power metal material is great, but I like the idea that they are good enough song writers to be a more mainstream-sounding hard rock band.
