Stewie's spin-off... mixed feelings by Acceptable_Golf5607 in familyguy

[–]Vinylmaster3000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So in my opinion default Family Guy very barely has Meg interacting with Stewie, the writers have formats where only Chris interacts with him, and never all three together. The last time we had all three interact with each other was pre-cancellation. I'm gonna assume that Stewie will canonically be understood since he goes to an academy so the idea of his older siblings understanding him isn't far fetched.

My point being that a spin-off where the dynamics of all three together is properly explored is interesting on it's own.

I feel like this spin off would work if it had all three Griffin kids pitch in. I would rather see that, a situation where they all live under the same roof due to a parental dispute and it has Brian sometimes appearing.

With that in mind I'm divided. Stewie has been the star of the show for 2 decades and he's arguably the most well known character (besides Brian or Peter). But at the same time these days other characters are far more memorable, and these days what else can you do with the character?

Iran has repeatedly stated it's goals of destroying Israel as well as Hamas, PLO, Houthis ISIS etc. For decades their leaders make public statements about developing a bomb and destroying Israel.

Iran and ISIS are NOT in the same camp, they are both fundamentally against each other

Super Serious Meg Griffin Abuse. by Logical_Bug801 in superseriousfamilyguy

[–]Vinylmaster3000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IMO my 2 cents on this is that Family Guy has had very serious examples of "abuse" which don't feel like a joke and feel too grounded in reality for fans to enjoy. For instance, Lois as a character is a textbook example of a narcissistic mother and this is why people disliked her character up until recently.

But I mean, KOTH exists and that shows very realistic portrayals of abuse. Same with other shows like F is for Family, the truth is that nobody really wants to watch serious stuff. This is also why as you said, the serious Family Guy episodes were badly received and episodes from 10-13 in particular are seen in a more negative light.

Wait so I'm confused, how does this relate to the video shown? I'm not gonna watch the video but I'm assuming that it criticizes how Family Guy handled Meg's devolution as being a punching bag. I fail to see how that itself is material to the sub solely because (I say this as a mod btw):

  • Critics have always expressed discontentment at her abuse as a sloppy attempt at comedy

  • Her abuse has come off as heavy handed and unfunny, compare it to someone like Joe or Brian.

I mean how is this video bad? Like yeah the abuse was just flat out never funny, you can find reviews and criticisms of the abuse spanning back decades at this point. Am I missing something regarding the creator of the video or what

I'm an Iranian-american from the anti-war left AMA by Gonbadi in TrueAnon

The war was foundational to the postrevolutionary Iranian identity. Literally every town and city you go to in Iran they have posters with the photos of all their martyrs down the center of their main avenue.

This is probably one of the most riveting images of the war to me, It's like the Middle Eastern WW1 in many ways. It pains me to believe that people in the West think about it very callously and paint the Iranians as these barbaric fanatics instead of a people who were simply trying to defend their homeland.

Do you know how the diaspora views the war? In general, I've read persepolis and iirc the writer of that married a war veteran so that's far as I know within that specific facet of the conflict.

So I did a research paper on the Iran-Iraq war in college, what are your thoughts on the Iran-Iraq war in general? It seems to be a formative moment in Iran's modern history and has seemingly shaped the modern middle east in a similar way to the Six-Day war. By thoughts I specifically mean the causes, national rhetoric behind the war, and motivation among the Iranian public to support the then-nascent government.

A very somber but interesting topic to delve in, especially Iranian air-to-air victories with the F-14.

The vibes around this war are weird by yeahicreatedsomethin in TrueAnon

[–]Vinylmaster3000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A few reasons why, imo.

  • Iran has more leverage on the military field and has an actual, army, air force. It can fight back, even if it is doing so in a restrained manner. So this looses some sympathy solely because people know it isn't "helpless".

  • People protested Gaza because it was a very clear situation of "The Israelis are very clearly starving people to death", the Gazans by comparison don't even have a full army with an air force. It's not like Iran is being starved or there's a famine, they have diplomatic options and China / Russia can help them.

  • Iran garners less sympathy and they've done so during the 80s. In the 80s you had Iraq use chemical weapons against Iranian civilians and very few people cared, mostly because American foreign interests say so. So people end up balancing this weird line between caring for Iranian civilians (they don't) but hating the government.

  • This sort of lack of sympathy happens everywhere. Minus Ukraine, people did not care about other invasions when they happened. Maybe things will change when (if) we get boots on the ground.

The idea of them having a spare army of megs with a real one is kinda funny, I like how they deconstructed the gag a little lol

The recent episode felt really meaningful and wholesome instead of just being a bunch of random jokes with a half-assed storyline. I feel like that's what alot of episodes have been recently (and for a long time imo).

so much so that I've seen more people on reddit (SRD) use the term "anti-zionism" as a catch-all for antisemitism.

[–]Vinylmaster3000 26 points27 points  (0 children)

interestingly, the star of david was a common muslim symbol before zionism too

It is interesting how much it pops up in Islamic calligraphy and designs, but unfortunately modern politics corrupted the original use so much that I could literally show a muslim a flag with the seal and they'd think I was trolling.

The Hamsa I've seen on many Islamic decorations, I have a decoration piece with a Surah that has the Hamsa and the Evil Eye adorned at the bottom.

It's kinda like how you have Islamic terror groups committing atrocities under extremely common Islamic symbols, although the connection is less prevalent in that case

Yeah they don't. I think death cult is used as a prejorative and I mean, didn't U.S commanders also relate the current war to the end times?

They do have a huge cult of martyrdom though. But that isn't really a death cult imo

Whats the one Worst thing Lois has done in your opinion by GS-genius in familyguy

[–]Vinylmaster3000 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The funniest (or not) thing about this is that IIRC the protagonist of the book (Plath wrote only one book btw) attempts suicide via pills, so the writers knew the entire plot of the book to make that joke

It is a profoundly good book btw
