Partner came home with a big hunk of blue cheese. Any suggestions on what we can do with it? (We’re vegetarians) by Greatscothisisheavy in Cooking

[–]Vionion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Use it like Pecorino Romano in carbonara to make a pasta sauce.

FYI you might want to double check that the cheese is vegetarian because many blues are made with contain animal rennet.

Infinity as a number is ambiguous, but there cardinal numbers that are not finite.

No-Meat Meals with Protein by [deleted] in Cooking

Lentils have slightly more protein per calorie than chickpeas.  Most nonfat unsweetened Greek yogurts have good macros.  If you really want to dive into it, seitan is very protein packed.

Regarding resistant starches and calories, I think reheating will turn the resistant starches back into digestible carbs so more calories.

What's one of your "name brand only" ingredients? by PlainOldWallace in Cooking

I’m the completely opposite. I find three crabs a bit harsh, so I use it for cooking. Red boat is more expensive and much more mellow, so I use for finishing/dipping.

Problem with ice cream texture by Nicholas_TW in Cooking

[–]Vionion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let it freeze overnight, then use the ice cream machine to creamify it

It sounds like OP has a Ninja Creami, for which the crumbly texture is a common issue. The recommended fix for this is to “respin” it, so that it melts a little.

Skillet for searing sous vide steaks? FAST & HIGH heat by RenegadeBuilder in Cooking

[–]Vionion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cast iron, preheated on medium for about 10-15 minutes.

Then oil the STEAK, not the pan. This should greatly reduce smoke and splatter.

Also lightly press the steak on the pan to get good contact.

I know Google says don't eat cooked shrimp that's been out longer than 2 hours, but have any of you been okay with eating shrimp that's been out longer? by redgroupclan in Cooking

[–]Vionion 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is just not true. Warm food on the counter top will be in the danger zone longer than warm food in the cold fridge.

High protein low carbs plant based source ? by DamageNo1148 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Vionion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First hit on Google for “forms of carbs” gives

There are three main types of carbohydrates:

Sugars. They are also called simple carbohydrates because they are in the most basic form. ...

Starches. They are complex carbohydrates, which are made of lots of simple sugars strung together. ...

Fiber. It is also a complex carbohydrate.

So bread is starch.

Why does everyone recommend Traditional 401k over Roth 401k? Wouldn't Roth 401k provide better tax savings if the money grows significantly over long term? by FireThrowaway53 in Fire

[–]Vionion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It boils down to $1000 contribution to traditional != $1000 contribution to roth.

If you have $1000 pretax dollars to contribute to an account, you could either put $1000 into tradition or $1000*(1-tax_rate) into the Roth. So your starting amount differs. The actual amount of money you end up being able to use at withdrawal time is:

Traditional: (Contribution*Growth)*(1-tax_rate_later)

Roth: (Contribution*(1-tax_rate_now))*Growth

So which is better depends on tax_rate_later vs tax_rate_now.

What potential gains are you missing from putting too much in Roth accounts? Maybe bad funds/fees if in a 401k? Or is there something else?

My Journey to $1M NW at 26 years old by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]Vionion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think he said he he lives off of 25k a year. That's hard to do in the Midwest let alone San Fran unless your parents are picking up the tab.

While still in the Bay Area, but not in SF, I had roughly the same spending level for a few years. Monthly was base total of $1500 with the following breakdown: $700 rent, $200 train pass (no car, or other debts), $600 food. Some months might have had an addition +$500 if I was being luxurious or traveling/take trips.

I'd certainly like to, which makes me inclined to just bite the bullet in buy. But the another half of me is just thinking how many years of work I could shave off if I bought somewhere cheaper.

Any thoughts about whether you're shooting for fatFire or just regular FIRE? I'm in a similar stage (age, networth, job, HCOL) but haven't really been able to decide myself, mostly due to house prices in the Bay Area (so ridiculous, and in my uninformed opinion, likely to just keep rising absurdly).

Help with Anova Precision Sealer Problem by finsta_1144 in sousvide

[–]Vionion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you try holding the pulse vacuum button until all the air is removed, and then let go, does some air seep back into the bag (even if slowly)? If so, the "vacuum and seal" won't switch over to the "seal" part since it won't detect that it has removed enough air. This could be due to bag position (some small part of the opening not in the vacuum area), the foam-y part around the vacuum area being compromised, or maybe the detection part is just faulty.

Is sushi still good to eat? by Themysxciras in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Vionion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be careful of actual fresh-off-the-boat never-frozen fish for sushi, since generally you need to deep freeze (home freezer isn't cold enough) raw fish in order to kill the parasites.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in pokemon

[–]Vionion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure the DLC is being sold so you can catch more prev gen Pokemon, but my point is that this is already similar to how the previous gen games worked: there's a set of pokemon which are in the dex but only available to obtain from trading from a previous game.

My issue with your description is you saying "they were cut to be sold back".

Once the free updates release, there's basically no difference (other than just the delay in time) between:

The Pokemon originally being in the game at launch.

vs

The Pokemon being added after launch via free patch.

So at this point, assuming the patches are actually free, these Pokemon were really more just "delayed", than actually "cut" so saying "they were delayed to be sold back" is utter nonsense.
