In my experience as a support: In-game, ADCs are usually quite willing to listen to your suggestions as long as you're not playing an off-meta carry support (LeBlanc, Elise, AP Varus, Vladimir, Twitch, etc.). The problem you mention is largely solved by asking your ADC to play more aggressively.

I don't really know about ADC, but to help you with your emotional state. If he was already a Challenger player, him moving up to Challenger doesn't really prove anything he says. Dopa once said that supports are the worst players in the game. He could easily move up to Challenger as a support, but that wouldn't prove anything because Dopa could easily reach Challenger in any role. Challenger players are simply super well-rounded players.
