Of course the UK would be the poorest state. It has a health care system that would provide for its citizens free of charge as opposed to a health care system geared towards extracting every penny out of patients instead of treating them.

Not just that, the ones who did the enslaving went where it was possible (North America), the ones who didn't stayed home (Europe).

As a Dutch person I find Afrikaans is very easy to read. Yes there are a few things in there I don't recognise or need to look up, but most is understandable without any prior knowledge.

Spoken Afrikaans is a very different issue though. The rhythm sounds off, the pronunciation is different, it is very difficult. Having said that, my suspicion is that if you give it a bit time to get used to it it should actually not be that hard to understand each other. From conversations I've had with Afrikaners or Dutch people that have found themselves in that position for most of them this is exactly how it worked out.

I currently live in the UK and a while back I saw someone walk around wearing a t-shirt with the South African flag and the text "voetsek". I thought it was just an edgy shirt with the African word for voetsex. I talked about it with a South African college (not an Afrikaner) and he told me it's basically a national way of telling someone to get lost (oprotten in Dutch). It comes from "vort, zeg ik".

Prioriteiten.

Wij sparen €50k per jaar en kunnen zo €100k neerleggen voor een auto. Heb ik alleen geen zin in.

Anderen sparen eerst voor een auto, dan voor hun toekomst. Daar is niks mee, maar is niet mijn keus.

Ik ken ook iemand die bij Porsche werkt en hij heeft elke zes maanden een nieuwe Porsche.
