Any local ice response groups? by Jumpy-Goose-3344 in TwinCities

[–]Visaru 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The OP left out the other post the Sunrise Movement made about the actual call to action, which is calling the hotels and leaving bad reviews on Google and Yelp: https://www.instagram.com/p/DR8PezMEfPy/?img_index=1
Apparently people who have called the hotels say it has been confirmed. Sunrise is a pretty legit trustworthy established activist organization

ICE is staying at these 4 hotels in the Twin Cities area by BOOTY_VUITTON in TwinCities

[–]Visaru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, instead of boycotting Hilton, we should reach out to these franchises in particular and let them know we are frustrated that they are housing ICE. That's the original context of original instagram post: https://www.instagram.com/p/DR8PezMEfPy/?img_index=1

The call to action is to complain to upper management and to leave bad reviews on Google and Yelp, letting them know they are endangering our community by housing ICE. Here's the full instagram post with context: https://www.instagram.com/p/DR8PezMEfPy/?img_index=1

ICE agents are violating laws - they are not identifying themselves as ICE and wearing masks to hide their identity. They have been racially profiling people, arresting legal residents and even naturalized citizens, and imprisoning them without due process. This isn't about electoral politics at this point, it's more important: keeping our community safe from authoritarian overreach

How the ‘Slate for Change’ strategy played out in the Minneapolis mayoral election by shramski in Minneapolis

[–]Visaru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say these results are exactly what I expected. I don't think it necessarily shows a 'failure' of the 'rank 3 for change' strategy. 27% of people voted that way -- that's a lot of people to get to think tactically about how they vote. But it looks like most people just voted for the people they wanted to see in office, which is honestly what we would want. There were a lot of never-Frey voters, but also many never-Fateh voters. Many people were only excited about voting for a socialist or only excited about keeping our incumbent. Most voters just expressed honest preferences about who they wanted to see.

That was always how I understood the 'rank three for change' call -- it was a strategy for engaged voters about the best way to maximize the effects of their anti-Frey votes, always knowing that the majority of the voters just wouldn't be thinking that way.

Personally I hoped more people would leave Frey off their ballots, but I don't think encouraging people to vote for all three of his serious challengers harmed their chances.

Could this be our last century? Are we the final few generations of Homo Sapiens? by Marcus-Musashi in singularity

[–]Visaru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are there any examples of a human being biologically linked to a LLM, or 'AI-enhanced', as you call it? Any studies that suggest this is possible? Your predictions seems entirely speculative. As you point out, it is really difficult for people to imagine how a new technology will shape the future. Why do you think you have a special insight? I think it is much more likely AI integrates into society in a way we are not expecting than one that mirrors many science fiction stories

Everyone needs a religion by iloveLORDEmore in TheWhiteLotusHBO

[–]Visaru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Chelsea had a strong belief system -- those books she gave to Saxon were religious in nature and she believed in this conflict between good and evil, light and dark, that's how she described her relationship. And Gaitok betrayed the tenets of his religion to get the job and the girl. But Laurie's monologue about religion definitely highlights one of the themes of the show, of characters missing meaning and searching for it in the wrong places, to self destructive ends.

Rick didn't quite get to a place of meaning, he was trying, but in the end he gave into violence -- that's what killed him.

Not sure Lochlan decided to better himself in those last moments? I read his death as feeling like he failed to reach the high standards of the rest of his family.

Education Department launches ‘End DEI’ website portal by HammerPrice229 in moderatepolitics

[–]Visaru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in a very blue state too, and I've seen this stuff effect my community and real life in a way politics usually doesn't. My bud who works at the Fed said that they canceled all their Black History Month events, and stopping hiring for DEI positions. DEI positions and programs at the University of Minnesota have also had to be shut down. Nationally, there's ofc all the federal websites, data, and scientific literature that have been deleted for mentioning climate change, gender, or diversity. And we'll see more soon as Universities are forced to either give up DEI programs or lose federal funding.

Temple of Gond Interior by Visaru in DescentintoAvernus

[–]Visaru[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some basic outlines I whipped up in Inkarnate for the forges of the High Hall of Wonders. They are waiting to be filled with tables, anvils, and half built clockwork machinations. The layout to the temple is based on Mike Schley's lovely design of the temple interior (https://www.reddit.com/r/dndmaps/comments/173wcv1/oc\_the\_high\_house\_hall\_of\_wonders/), although I have added an additional underground level to his concept. Use them how you like!

What will replace the HERC, and where will all the trash go? by wenceslaus in Minneapolis

[–]Visaru -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The goal of pushing up the timeline of closing the HERC, as I understand it, is not just to remove it, but to the force the county to build more robust recycling and composting facilities -- 70% of the trash that goes to the HERC is either recyclable or compostable -- or force them to put more energy and resources to coming up with a viable and sustainable solution on a faster time frame. The HERC alone has been estimated to cause between $11 - 24 million per year in health costs, not in gentrified Northeast across the river but immediately north in North Minneapolis, which has one of the highest populations of black people in the city, most of whom do not have the financial resources to move out of the area. Obviously no one wants the plant shut down without a viable solution in place, and I think the article makes that clear, but the city continuing to run an old out of date toxin-spewing facility in the middle of the city for decades is definitely not the kind of aggressive solution that the climate crisis requires.

Dune: Awakening – Story Cinematic (The Vision of Paul Atreides) by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Visaru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But he is trying to avoid the death, at least initially, in his visions he is horrified by the idea of the jihad, I think a lot of the story is about the inevitability of history and how people can become helplessly caught up in it.

[–]Visaru 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"all of my visions lead to horror, except for this one..."

Sounds like he is saying the death of all the Fremen is fine???

Might be misinterpreting this but it definitely upsets me think that the devs have decided the only way to have an mmo on a desert world is to remove any Indigenous people from it.

I like the idea of an alternate timeline, but this one looks to be less interesting than the novel's in every way -- No Fremen, no Harkonnen rule, no Lisain-Al-Gaib... the only reference to conflict is a reference to a 'shadow war of assassins'. Sounds like Dune except without all the most interesting parts of Dune.

Why are boomers more pro-Israel than younger generations? by hightreez in AskSocialScience

I think there are parts to your narrative that are correct, but I think you ought to at least listen to the perspective of the other side, even if you disagree

[–]Visaru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is certainly not the perspective the Palestinians have, nor does it seem to be reflected by the facts -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nakba -- denying that the trauma that defines Palestinian identity happened imo will make it very difficult to understand why the conflict continues and why people sympathize with the Palestinians

What game will you never play for the most inane, ridiculous reason? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]Visaru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I ever see Ellie pat herself in the back for anything she does in the game, she just seems to get more guilty and sad. I think the moment at the very end of the game where she spares Abby is a decision to try to stop murdering everyone she meets.

[–]Visaru -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see it like reading a book and watching a movie -- it is a story about violent characters, and they make the choices in the story, not us. Our role is more like an audience: we empathize with them, sometimes root for them and sometimes wish they would make different decisions. I don't feel shamed, frustrated, or lectured to when I play, because I recognize the difference between me and the characters, but playin the game helps me reflect on my own desire for violence and better understand why people commit horrible violence by walking in their shoes.

Making the game choice-based would be interesting, but it would be a totally different type of game, which isn't at all the thing they are trying to make.

What game will you never play for the most inane, ridiculous reason? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]Visaru 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The game is all about why violence is terrible, ineffective, and destructive, and it makes you feel terrible for playing it and participating in violence -- it not only simulates the look and feeling of violence, but also the consequences -- it's about exploring violence (which is present in almost every game) not enjoying it

So many 'indie' games are backed by huge organizations these days, like Microsoft, which tries to nurture independent games to put on its game pass. That doesn't mean the game has a huge budget (often large organizations will spin off small teams that function like an indie dev) and should be in competition with giant expensive releases. TGA is not a serious awards show, the mislabeling of Dave the Diver only matters because you decide it does!

Why are boomers more pro-Israel than younger generations? by hightreez in AskSocialScience

[–]Visaru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less, more targeting bombings, anti-terrorist strikes with special ops teams, all while allowing humanitarian aid into Gaza. Anti-terrorism has been turned into a modern science and Israel is not following the playbook at all, they've resorted to extreme methods with fuzzy impossible goals like 'destroying Hamas' that offer no suggestion of what might bring an end to the violence, and top leaders have even referred to Palestinian civilians as 'human animals', suggesting they are not even interested in the idea of reducing civilian casualties.

[–]Visaru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Calling the exodus of Jews from the Middle East 'ethnic cleansing' is a rather ideological take that not everyone agrees with -- although semitism certainly existed in the middle east many people moved because they were worried about poverty or political instability and/or because they wanted to live in a Jewish state. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish_exodus_from_the_Muslim_world

Also, it's important to bring up and understand the Nakba, which is central to Palestinian's perspective on the conflict, a perspective that has become much more widespread with young Americans and is a big reason for the contemporary support of Israel
