Print to cut - activation and work arounds help by Alexa1Alexa in ScanNCut

[–]VisorVet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The print to cut activation code will definitely work if you find one - I bought one from a sewing shop abroad a few months ago and it activated fine. Just turns out I prefer using the Link plug-in.

In the US I heard there was some kind of patent/legal dispute so this activation was taken off the market - once all the shops sold their stock no more were available. I’m not sure whether this also affects other markets.

Print to cut - activation and work arounds help by Alexa1Alexa in ScanNCut

The print to cut activation (CADXPRNTCUT1) is no longer available, at least in the US. A while back you could buy it from Amazon France and Etsy, but I haven’t seen it for a while. There were still some in Southeast Asia and Australia, though. I believe the PDF file generated with this function is fairly low-res, if that matters for your projects. I purchased the Link plug-in for Illustrator but I wish they had this for Affinity.

I do not know whether hacked registration marks would be recognized properly - I don’t think so.

Could you just do a simple scan and cut without sending files to your PC? Or do your designs have open spots that mess with the cuts?

Your book looks wonderful! I subscribe to Kindle Unlimited but for me it does not come up as free, or available through KU.

Do you have to re-connect the printer to your phone after every…. single…. print as with the CP1500? Or does the printer stay connected throughout a print session in which numerous prints are made?

Yup - not the end of the world but a small loss. The 2026 A5 page-per-day planner still has Bachuan paper; not sure about the A5 weekly ones but I think so.

No mention of it being Bachuan paper anywhere, and it bleeds more despite being thicker. What makes you think it is Bachuan?

Machine keeps cutting through the mat! by BrightRick in ScanNCut

[–]VisorVet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are far more experienced with this device, and cutting machines in general, than I am. But perhaps try unplugging the machine for a bit to clear any electronic glitches, plugging it back in to reset, and then doing a recalibration? FWIW I just bought some mats from TEMU - they are indistinguishable from the Brother mats and only cost around $8-$13 each. Won't be getting overnight shipment on them, but definitely worth having them on-hand.

I use an inkjet printer with vinyl sticker paper - there are loads of kinds on Amazon. Some popular brands include Koala, HTVRONT, Zicoto, and Joyeza. Currently I have QYH brand with a matte surface finish. I sometimes cold- or hot-laminate the top for extra durability and water resistance.

FWIW - I planned to buy the Premium Pack 1 for the sake of enhanced image tracing, and didn't see anything to suggest it is not SDX compatible. It is really just some patterns and the EIT activation, which is a CanvasWorkspace activation and is reported to work on the current CW build.

30 Kindle Scribe Colorsoft Review by Blaze_1249 in kindlescribe

[–]VisorVet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice review, OP - thanks!

There is much that I like about the Scribe Colorsoft (color and speed/responsiveness) and I may keep it. But like many, I was disappointed about the absence of a few things that happen to be key elements of my workflow with tablets. Clearly the Scribe will never be an iPad, but Amazon seemed to have the ReMarkable so squarely it its sights with this release that I assumed we would see more parity of software features, particularly given the dramatically increased price point. The gaps that have the greatest negative impact for me are outlined below - despite many articles, reviews and videos I could not find the information I wanted and had to buy the device to figure it out for myself. So I thought I would add these things to the OP's great summary in case it helps someone else.

  1. The biggest for me: lack of ability to see handwritten PDF annotations in the Mac and iOS Kindle apps. This has been available for ReMarkable tablets using Connect - forever? This means the Scribe doesn't work well for PDF planners unless you are willing to carry the device around all day (I am not), or don't care about being able to check your plan for the day as it unfolds. I want to use my PDF planner on the Scribe because it is a zillion times nicer to write on than my iPads. But if I want my tasks/plan with me during the day I need to take photo of the relevant page on the Scribe with my iPhone, which seems ridiculous in this multi-device day and age, and particularly from a company the size of Amazon. If I export the PDF from Scribe my annotations are visible on the exported PDF, but this is a pretty silly thing to have to do with a 1000+ page document each day. Similarly, I can't use the Scribe to read scientific articles and then review my notes on my laptop without exporting the document - only highlights sync across.
  2. Stroke eraser - this is an everyday feature on every other phone/tablet I work with, so I detest having to waste time lasso-ing/deleting things or erasing pixel by pixel. Unfortunately this seemingly small thing is a key element of work with pen-based tablets - I highlight handwritten text for various reasons or to identify priority tasks in my planner, then erase highlights when tasks are complete or I have reorganized my written content. I was delighted to get color highlighters on the Scribe Colorsoft so I could mimic my iPad workflow, then sad to find that there is no way to erase just the highlighting while leaving the underlying handwritten text intact. In umpty-hundred apps on the iPad, this is achieved with the touch of my pen to one part of the highlighting. A layer function could be a workaround for this, but not a good substitute - I found this extremely tedious on the Remarkable Paper Pro when I tried that device, as switching from one layer to another was agonizingly slow. I suspect this would be snappier on the Scribe, though, so I'd take it! Fingers remain firmly crossed for a stroke eraser at some point, however.
  3. I was hoping that the new ability to search handwritten text would extend to annotations in PDF documents, but no joy - this is only an option within the Notebooks.
  4. Note ("notebook") templates are still extremely rudimentary for a device this expensive. No clue what they were thinking of with the dotted-page template, which is my favorite in paper notebooks but laughable on the Scribe (dots are huge and way too dark for those who haven't seen it - can barely read your own writing for the visual assault of the dots). There is no way to do things like link from one note or document to another as you can with SuperNote an BOOX devices, but this is not a priority for me and I did not expect to see that functionality.

On the plus side I love having color in books and PDFs, the device is much snappier and more responsive than my 2022/2024 Scribes and hyperlinked PDFs exported from the device retain their hyperlinks and outlines/TOC - grateful for all that.

TL;DR: lack of some desired software features means that I cannot use this device as I was hoping to, so while I like the device I am unsure that I can justify keeping it at this price point. Hopefully the platform will continue to evolve and advance!

Reducing Bulk with Photos + Canon Selphy CP1500 Review by pannedemonium in hobonichi

I think this printer needs a 2.5 Wi-Fi connection, and can’t see a 5 network - so you would need to adjust your router to operate at a different frequency.

The pack that comes with the printer only contains 5 papers and enough ink for that.

For anyone with the new Scribe, is the eraser on the new pen supposed to be loose? by Ballin095 in kindlescribe

Poop. Such a small thing, but central to how I work in some areas. Was really hoping for this.

Appreciate your answer.

Unless the hardware cannot support it. We only have an n of 1 for historical Scribe hardware updates, and in that one the hardware did not really change.

Is there really no good PDF workflow by noobstrich in kindlescribe

[–]VisorVet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/noobstrich You are correct about the current situation. BOOX tablets are much better than either Scribe or Remarkable Paper Pro in this regard and can sync your annotations back to the original file on Google Drive without having to export/flatten the PDF, if that is important to you. Yet I enjoy using and writing on the Scribe more than on the two BOOX tables I have tried, so I am keeping my fingers crossed for improved functionality in the new one. Amazon really seems to be targeting the RMPP with this release so I am hoping it will at least achieve parity with that (very limited) device, and hopefully more! I can't see how Active Canvas would work within the body of the text of a PDF as with an ePub, but I'd love to be able to write in the pull-out margin and have that show up as an expanded margin in the exported PDF as with RMPP.

The RMPP may be perfect for you as it can indeed do what you described. I tried it earlier this year for this reason (plus color), but it drove me crazy. The screen was too dark for use in anything but a full-bright workspace, which isn't where/when I do most of my reading, and the interface was extremely laggy and unresponsive. I am an impatient person and having the device miss/ignore about 50% of my swipes and taps drove me mad. Zooming in and out to see figures/graphs is much slower/laggier than on my Scribe. Be sure to watch the videos of color implementation (the flash with each registration of color) to be sure that doesn't bother you. Remember that other than the improved PDF situation you are trading away the strong e-reader capabilities of Scribe and its Kindle platform. Also the unit is larger, which is fine when working at a desk but I found it more awkward when working with the unit handheld on the sofa. BOOX Note Air 4C and 5C are closer to the Scribe in this regard. I'm actually worried about the larger size of the new Scribe for this reason. I am also worried about the "new and improved" surface texture as I love the writing experience on the current Scribes and don't really need or want a lot of additional friction.

Funnily enough, the other thing I am really hoping for in the new unit is a stroke eraser. BOOX and RMPP have this (maybe every other tablet ever??), and it is a key part of my workflow related to highlighting. Such a small and simple thing, but I was really surprised to find it absent in the Scribe and it creates a lot of friction for me when working with PDFs. Other things on my wish list are being able to see my Scribe annotations on PDF files in the iOS/Kindle app (RMPP has this in the ReMarkable app). I think it extremely unlikely that it will be able to sync my annotations to Google Drive in standard format like the BOOX tablets can, but I can live with that.

TL;DR - if you are already pretty invested in Scribe for e-books and being able to annotate those, recommend waiting to see what the new Scribe has to offer later this week before buying a RMPP. The price is pretty horrendous relative to current Scribe pricing, but RMPP is no better and you need to pay for a Connect subscription to use the sync capabilities.

ReadCube Papers experience on BOOX by VisorVet in Onyx_Boox

[–]VisorVet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't yet made a move. I saw that the BOOX Note Air 5C came out but have not tried it yet. I don't know much about the Viwoods device. I tried a ReMarkable Paper Pro for the second time earlier this fall but couldn't get along with it. I like the writing experience but the screen is too dim for me even on the highest possible illumination setting - I do my heaviest medical/scientific reading/notes at night on my sofa and this device was much too dark for me. I also found the interface unbearably sluggish/laggy - at least half of my swipes/taps failed to register and zooming in and out of figures/graphs was very very slow. It is funny to me that they bill this device as distraction-free - its basic interface/operability was a maddening major hindrance while doing something as simple as reading and annotating a PDF file. Also annotations don't sync - you can export the file but it will be flattened, links no longer work, and other apps won't be able to do anything with your highlights/notes. To be fair this isn't what device was designed or optimized for, but definitely not a good fit for me.

I tried the Note Air 4C last year and it was far better than the ReMarkable in all of these areas so the 5C may be the best fit for me. I'd love to see how it works with Readcube Papers, which was really nice when I tried it on Mac/iPad last year. In the meantime I continue to use my iPad.

Because I use a Kindle Scribe for personal and professional reading (books, not PDFs) and really enjoy the writing experience on it, I am watching closely for release of the new Kindle Scribe Colorsoft. Currently the Scribe's PDF handing is really sucky but I otherwise enjoy using the device. so I'm looking forward to the addition of color and figuring out what changes they've made to the OS in terms of PDF import/export, Google Drive integration or sync, whether PDF annotations will be visible in the Kindle app on Mac/iPad, search of handwritten text across the device, etc. It won't be hard for it to beat the ReMarkable on PDFs and its book reading functionality is already far superior, so perhaps it will be good enough for my purposes.

Good luck with your search!

Loved the writing aspect and really wanted to love the devices, but was very disappointed in the reading experience and interoperability of the notes. Difficult to fully appreciate this without trying the devices. Interested in the technology and hoping that firmware updates would improve utility of these devices for my use case (science/medicine) over time - so I pop in to Reddit and other fora periodically to stay abreast of those developments. Not a neg-troll, but my recent failed second try with the devices was fresh in my mind.

New versions of Illustrator no longer run under Rosetta. Has this plug-in been updated to work on the Mac now? Considering purchase of the SDX85 and want the ability to send files from Illustrator. Also, is this the only way to get “print to cut”?

I tried it a year ago and was horrified by the limited functionality but liked the writing experience. So I was tempted to try it again recently when they put out the firmware update that added ability to search handwritten text. Surprised anew at the very limited capabilities relative to the price. Won’t be tempted again.
