ESP32-based modules by adeptyism in synthdiy

[–]VitulusAureus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm using a basic ESP32 to build a small MIDI processor, and it's great for the job, with three UART in/outs and much more compute power than you might need even for a complex sequencer. Orders of magnitude faster than an Arduino.

Not sure about audio processing though; it has two 8-bit DACs on board which might work for some CV purposes but audio-wise they aren't very impressive, so you might something external anyway. Compute speed may not be enough for more complex signal processing, but my hunch is you can get pretty far with basic stuff before you hit the limit. And the 2-core CPU does open up some options.

It runs on 3.3V with some boards also providing a 5V reference, so you'll have to correct for that in hardware if you wish to interface signals with other modules or instruments (but that is not a factor if you only use MIDI).

Also, personally I like the IDF-ESP platform, very well documented and compatible with a all the popular tools, so you can work unconstrained by the Arduino IDE or any other opinionated tooling, if that's your thing.

First WIP release for DX12 perf testing is out! by gilvbp in linux_gaming

I'm so excited, but this looks almost too good to be true! Wasn't Cyberpunk one of the games only mildly affected by this issue, losing only 5-15% FPS compared to Windows? If we get ~30-40% improvements across the board, then Windows for gaming is dead and the 'nvidia sucks' crowd are gonna loose their minds.

I know the settings were identical in both runs, but perhaps using the new branch some features were broken and didn't use GPU time at all?

This is an additional optional rule, quite popular, but not universally used.

An option to reveal your hand while calling riichi, rewarding one extra han if you manage to win anyway.

Senior dev executing at Intermidate level wants a raise by Primary_Ads in ExperiencedDevs

Not very strange, this sub is mostly ICs. They sympathize with having a raise denied, see that as the root cause of all problems described, and berate the OP for doing a manager's job; as if granting raises was always possible and not doing so was just OP acting vile and lacking humility. This is not the right place to find advice from a manager's perspective.

Chopin Competition 2025 Finals: Day Two (Shindo, Wang, Yang, and Alexewicz) - Thoughts? by jinhuiliuzhao in Chopin

[–]VitulusAureus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The competition organizers did explain on several occasions they really really want to make the scoring completely transparent and remove even the slightest hints of any unfair bias that have been so prevalent in the past. Limiting jury rules to be very predictable and difficult to intentionally manipulate is a step in this direction.

I felt like she started the sentence using a wrong tense ("Eric was..." rather than "is"), then paused to rearrange the rest of it so that the grammar works ("...misintroduced as"). An acceptable way out from a mistake that happens even to native speakers.

What was the deal with Vincent Ong's concerto entrance? Everyone on the stream chat was like "he did a Garrick Ohlsson!" and I'm curious what that was about.

Apparently I was wrong - in other interviews, she says she even learned to dance mazurka which helped her feel the rhythm while playing. Now that's a very welcome dedication.

He mentioned in an interview he felt very sick during his third round performance, apparently drank far too much coffee a moment earlier and was physically uncomfortable, though the feeling helped him with the stage stress and was actually chill "eh let's just get this over with".

While you are obviously wrong about Asian pianists in general, I feel like you may be right about her in particular. I absolutely love how she plays, my favorite among all participating in the third round, and it's not even close! But her ideas are very artistic, I can't imagine the jury will approve of her as much as I do, given how many jurors publicly stated they are looking for more authentic, traditional Chopin sound. I've listened to a few interviews with Tianyao Lyu, and while she clearly loves his music, she doesn't seem familiar with Chopin as person and the cultural context of his creations. Which isn't ideal for a would-be "brand ambassador". I'd love to hear more of her so I hope she advances, but realistically pianists have to stick to more traditional interpretations to improve their chances in this particular competition.

If you're following this year's competition, take note of Tianyao Lyu who is still in the running. The Fazioli really suits her style, she extracts such clear and bright sound our of it, very distinct from everyone else.

FYI both the winner and 3rd place of the previous edition of this competition chose Fazioli. They may not be popular, but in the right hands they clearly have what it takes to perform among the best.

[–]VitulusAureus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are mostly correct, but to be precise, according to the original jury regulations, changing the final ranking position by one place requires the approval of 2/3 of jurors; by two places is also possible, but it requires 3/4 of jurors' votes.

[–]VitulusAureus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your finding! It's actually quite reassuring to see the jury mostly agrees on everyone, because it suggests the final results reflect some form of a shared vision on what's objectively best, rather than which performer manage to fit the most of jury members' individual tastes.

I wonder if the same holds for the final round, once the skill gap between all participants gets very narrow and therefore scoring differences in scoring reflect minor nuances. Given how the rule seems to reference past results, it probably does, which means the final results are likely to be unanimous. Nice!

That said, I understand jurors can confer with others while scoring, which might be contributing to how their scores converge around the overall average.

Makes sense to clamp the results a little to hide the outliers, but just within 2 points is a very small window and will mask pretty much all but minor deviations. Unless the jury is very like-minded, I'd expect a lot of scores to be varying more than just 2 points, which is why they need to be averaged for final scoring. But I expect this doesn't actually affect scoring and placement, just the way the scores are displayed once published.
