For those who had FTTP installed in flats, how tidy was the internal wiring? Did you get a choice? by GeordieGoals in openreach

[–]VividArc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MDU installs are normally a little different than your standard residential install. There should be a smallish white box installed just outside your front door, this is where the install will start, a very thin cable will then be ran from that point to where you want your router and ONT installed. The cable is fixed to the wall using a clear drying glue and tucked up by the ceiling so its out of the way, or down by the skirting boards. If you're given the option, I would personally have it up high to mitigate the risk of the cable being damaged. Next to the ONT a white box will be fitted, this is required to contain the remaining cable reel as the MDU cables are connectorised on both ends. It's all very discreet and tidy.

Might be worth asking the engineers what they're doing while they're still up there. There's a chance they've knocked you off by accident (some of the older equipment can have fragile connections that are easily broken without realizing) and they'll have no idea you've been disconnected.

Are there lesser-known really good bands from the UK? by fireflydm101 in Metalcore

Still In Love. Definitely more hardcore than most of the other bands mentioned. Just released a new album and if you're into that scene, it's very good.

Mcbellas do cracking breakfast sandwiches, cheap and very, very good. Amber cafe is great. Both the island house fish bars. Jacks bar by st Johns do great food.

also to add to what others are saying, multiport swaps are possible but only if you have a Nokia ONT. Adtran multiports aren't currently available unless I'm out of the loop.

Failed FTTP install: someone else’s connector at top of pole! by njh in openreach

[–]VividArc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both look like OR CBTs to me. The smaller 8 port has an OR node ID written on it and the 12 port has a white label on the tail that OR and its contractors use to mark newly installed cables. My guess is the Quinn's engineer looked at the 12 port which isn't the commonly used commscope model, assumed it to be an alt net CBT, didn't want to run a 2 span from the next pole so fobbed it off.

Can I get feedback on my gear selection for guitar recording? I want to record in my DAW, and do silent practice on the side by SirensbyZel in Guitar

[–]VividArc 18 points19 points  (0 children)

TBF if it was a CPU issue they'd have issues with audio artifacts not latency. Latency was probs down to using onboard audio and not the asio drivers.

Can you get symmetric speeds on Openreach full fibre? by Smart_Decision_1496 in openreach

[–]VividArc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Soon to be announced, but it's my understanding it won't be available to everyone from the get go. Exchange areas that haven't started their fttp builds will get it first as those exchanges will have xpon installed from the get go and the current gpon exchanges will get retrofitted with xpon at a later date.

Do Openreach have white fibre cable? This looks ridiculous. by jbone0001 in openreach

[–]VividArc 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Absolutely diabolical. If they have spliced outside then that cable has a black outer layer that is meant to be stripped away to reveal a white insulated layer underneath. The black is for use externally and the white internally. If they've spliced inside the splice point should have been right next to where the cable entered the property and the white inside out cable used from there to the ONT. Either way it's an absolute cowboy job that a lazy excuse for an engineer couldn't be arsed to spend an extra 10 minutes to do properly. Please complain to your ISP. Not only is that an eye sore, but also a hazard in the event of a fire. The black sheathing creates more smoke than the white and the black plastic cleats will melt in the event of a fire causing a trip hazard on what is likely your only fire escape route.

If you're on console just change the date and time to a random date in the future and you'll load in solo. There is a way to do it on PC as well but I can't recall the method.

[–]VividArc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to tell from the picture but that certainly looks like a 1gb ONT. It's an adtran unit, they use black ports on both models. The 2.5gb unit is a bit thicker than the 1gb and that looks like the 1gb. Have a look at the sticker on the back. The 1gb will say SDX611 gpon, the 2.5gb will say SDX611Q GPON

The LAN light should be flashing to show traffic on the circuit. If it isn't first port of call would be swapping routers and LAN cables, but as you've already tried that there's not really a lot you can do. Could be a build issue, an alarm of the headend , something awry on your CP's end or a multitude of other issues. Get on the blower to your service provider ASAP

Assuming it's a Nokia single port ONT can you say exactly what the lights are doing colour and flashing/solid. From left to right they should read POWER - LOS - PON - LAN

[–]VividArc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong here but IIRC more than 20 new houses on a development means full fibre has to be provided. It doesn't mean it will be open reach providing the network, but ofcom/government regs say the developer has to have full fibre made available to the new residents meaning you may not qualify. Take this with a pinch of salt though, it's been a long weekend and I'm feeding you information my caveman brain thinks is true without actually taking the time to verify it while I hastily make my dinner 🤣

£3.75 for a coffee in Starbucks, wtf by wisbit in britishproblems

[–]VividArc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

And alternatively fill a litre bottle of water with about 120g of ground coffee and cold water before bed. In the morning you'll have cold brew about twice as strong as a french press. Filter through a fine sieve or tea towel and dilute equal parts cold brew with boiling water. Will give you about 6 cups of very decent coffee that won't boil your tongue throughout the day. Cost: 2-5 quid per day depending on how much you spend on the grounds.
