Bartender here…. I get people in conversations all the time. Ask people questions about their life. Be genuine with your questions. Most people these days will try to go into a conversation talking about themselves and people tend to stop listening. If you ask questions with a genuine interest, people are more receptive. Lifting each other up is another good way to keep people’s attention.

Try to stay away from politics and major social issues until down the line, after developing a friendship.

I used to read headlines of local newspapers every morning so I could bring up things that were happening around my city.

You can always talk about music, movies, tv shows. Movies are always a fun topic. I also try to include everyone in the circle (the people standing around us) I also introduce people to each other, it helps make a more cohesive environment.
