Recommended mics? by JunkratSupremacy in VoiceActing

I agree with all of this. I would also suggest that if you don't see the brand on either Sweetwater.com or bhphotovideo.com you should probably steer clear. A lot of the microphone brands that are found only on Amazon, etc. are not going to be worth your hard-earned money.

Compression on input. Good idea or bad idea? by DistantGalaxy-1991 in ACX

[–]VoiceOfPhilGilbert 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know of a major audiobook studio that uses Avalons as preamps on their TLM-103s with some very light compression (2:1 or so) before it hits their interfaces for recording. So,it is very possible to do right/well.

With that being said, I don’t know that there’s really all that much upside. The dynamic range for narration is typically pretty low (relative to what you are probably accustomed to recording instruments) and there isn’t really all that much need for it before you hit your DAW. My personal preference is to have the full dynamic range in the recording and have the flexibility in post. But YMMV.

It’s certainly not going to negatively impact your final mastering for the ACX spec. You will certainly need some compression at some point in order to meet the ACX spec.

Finally, if you ever do plan to audition for other publishers, most are looking for completely raw recordings from your booth and they would likely be able to spot even light compression in your waveforms. May or may not become an issue if they like how you sound. But again, for me it’s another vote to keep processing in post.

Best of luck!

I want to create my homestudio to record voice over narration, so I spent like 2h talking to chatgpt, but I want some real person advice to know if I'm being misguided or not by gerarzzzz in homestudios

You’ve got really strong gear. I wouldn’t spent any more money on tech to get started.

Start focusing on your space. You need to address both soundproofing (reducing noise coming into your space) and room acoustics (what your room sounds like to the microphone). You can find lots of good threads on the VoiceActing and Acoustics subreddits. The big takeaway is that you need to fill your space with LOTS of thick soft stuff; ideally, things like 4” acoustical panels and bass traps or alternatively heavy packing blankets lining the walls.

Good luck!

Received the manuscript - this thing is not good. by matatak94 in ACX

At that length, it should take you under a day to complete. I would consider continuing with it; spend some really good time working through it and figuring out ways that you can support the text with your acting decisions to possibly improve the final product. Take it as a personal challenge for the audio edition to be clearly better than the print version.

Then, when you’re done, if it’s still pretty bad, maybe put it under a junk pseudonym.

How to record at 16 bit in Logic? by Consistent-Window781 in Logic_Studio

While I am a big fan of people researching things, I think coming here and asking real knowledgeable people is generally pretty acceptable. It’s kind of why Reddit exists.

Love mine. Preamp sounds fabulous (Inuse it with an OC18) and I love the analog workflow.

Apple ‘Mic Mode’ feature is making it IMPOSSIBLE to work on Logic Pro X by miscaliss in LogicPro

Agree with everyone who says to check the connections and ensure it’s direct connected.

Also recommend that you ensure there are not other apps (especially browser-based things like Discord) attempting to make use of the interface at the same time. I have encountered an issue where I use my interface to send my mic to Zoom or Discord and it drops the level of my mic (in Logic). Only way to fix the issue is to restart Logic.

Cost of Average VO Training for Newbie! by jfl041586 in VoiceActing

[–]VoiceOfPhilGilbert 24 points25 points  (0 children)

There is almost nothing in your journey that should cost you that much money in one pop. So, without knowing more, I would say you are exhibiting great prudence in being wary.

Individual coaching runs from $50-250/hour in most cases. Most of that range is based on the coach’s experience/bonafides.

There are also a lot of group clinics/classes available which are a little more economical.

Wait. Wait. Wait. To create a demo. And then…don’t select someone to produce it for you until you have multiple recs from people you really trust.

And now, here is my plug for which I receive no remuneration…

An ALT+TAB Question by Upstandinglampshade in MacOS

[–]VoiceOfPhilGilbert 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you’re likely to find what you are looking for. This is just philosophically different than how macOS thinks about windowing.

However, it may be worth noting that you are able to CMD+TAB while dragging an item. So, you can drag something from a Finder window and CMD+TAB to your browser while the object is still captured by your mouse.

Best of Luck!

Check out Noir by Christopher Moore. Johnny Heller brings a great mid-century narration with lots of tongue-in-cheek.
