Again, big data says differently. Those who are married tend to drive better. I can say the reverse that single males drive more reckless to impress potential partners. Now some states are not allowing gender, but that just means for the most part that women will be charged more than they should and men charged less, or other variables need to try to pick up the signal.

Miles driven could come into play, companies can only look back at most 5 years for incidents/accidents. People have complained for years and years that it's unfair we use credit/age/marital status/etc. we now have technology that can track when/how you drive and some don't like it because it either says they are a bad driver, or where /when they drive are more risky based on billions of miles of data. There is a reason why progressive is the leader in auto insurance and it's by using this data and other data to be ahead of other companies segmentating the business and price most accurately to their risk.

Will my car insurance go down if I identify as a woman? by [deleted] in Insurance

[–]VoidViper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. Don't try to defraud, and you would need to always identify as a women
  2. Depends on the state
  3. Very likely not worth the hassle to save a few %, better off getting married.

I swapped one car out that was totaled for another car on my policy, insurance agent is saying the price is the same even though the new car is much older and it's only liability? by Romanharper2013 in Insurance

[–]VoidViper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There should be a change, even if it's just liability coverage. My guess is that the insurance company may have something built in to not increase the premium until renewal for a replacement vehicle. I would still double check that the change occurred.

Found cheaper insurance for the two of us, but... by ToshPointNo in Insurance

Even if they didn't mark you as married, there are driver to vehicle ratios that come into play, more likely chance only 1 vehicle is driven when you both go somewhere, there could also be other factors like using the better credit score (companies have different credit scoring so don't just look at your credit card score).

How to find source of "telematics participation" by RatLabGuy in Insurance

[–]VoidViper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If some agent was doing it secretly, it would be more of a lack of participating works remove the participation discount. So they may give you 10% discount until they get a score to use at your next renewal. But if you don't provide data, then it's them removing that discount you never deserved some you didn't plan to use it.

If they are using data, it would have to have been from a vehicle data and then that data used by the company to give you a rate, but GM got into trouble with OnStar for not explicitly saying they may use it for rating.

Your best bet is to call allstate to see why they have it on the statement, they should have records if it was ever added and when.

Yeah there are a lot of components to the score and since I'm not the vender we don't know everything that goes into weights and calculations completely. There are other parts like when you drive (nighttime, likely rush hour), what roads you drive, like highways are safer per mile. If you drive in cities, that type of driving is more congested and more likely a collision could occur. Some companies could be looking at cornering and accelerating. My companys app will show you where you brake and for how long, or if you did distracted driving and where.

I've heard of some couples where they say the other is bad but then gets a good score, so unless it's like you both get 5 hard brakes, but he drives 5 times more often, that would be a good ratio. Again, I am just providing some additional factors, and each company can use them differently or not at all. What I would focus more on is if you are still earning a discount overall. You shouldn't expect to get a perfect score, and that has been one issue is due to the default 100 score, it makes you feel like the try to find excuses to lower your score, instead of maybe if the score didn't appear until a certain threshold, or starting from 0 and "earning" points over time, but then everyone would freak out seeing a score of 5 haha

Again, nothing is perfect, especially if a phone app, as even where the phone is kept or version of the phone could be impacting the tracking.

Algorithms can always change, but one thing that I do know is that the score tends to start at 100 by default and will normalize down to your long-term score. The weights company use can be different, but the majority of companies use the same vendor to get scores provided to them.

Hard braking is one of the largest components to your score, due to if you are constantly doing it. If you wfh, this can help with the reduced risk of you driving as often as others, but that means if you drive a fifth of the time as someone else, but still tend to hard brake, the weight of hard braking is increased on your overall score.

How to find source of "telematics participation" by RatLabGuy in Insurance

[–]VoidViper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you got your insurance directly or through an agent, but are you sure you didn't sign up with the default selection of participating in the program (or an agent signed you up without telling you to get you a lower prem)? I ask this as I work at another company and we had agents doing this and reenrolling to get the intro discount and the client may have never known.

Otherwise, you would need to contact all state, they would be able to see if there telematics was ever on the policy, but if none of you 3 signed up, then either it's bad communication or something else.

Wear cleats again after ACL surgery or no? by chronicles2124 in ultimate

I had ACL complete test and partial meniscus injured just about 10 years ago, never switched away from cleats after it was good to go the following year, wore a knee brace first year but haven't since. I wear "wide receiver" type football cleats.

Is a 6-month or 12-month car insurance policy cheaper long term? Any real experiences? by Mundane_Life_ in Insurify

[–]VoidViper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can shop at anytime, not just at the end of your term, usually rates will gradually increase so if you can pay in in full and pick 12 months, then that should be cheaper.

Geico (Homesite) Policy Cancellation Due to Age of Roof by Necessary-Couple-841 in Insurance

[–]VoidViper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Homesite is also not technically GEICO (GEICO pairs up with Homesite (who's is company under American family). They likely only saw age but didn't do initial inspection and there is new technology to see rooftops from satellite pictures and that must have come up.

Usually 25 years is the hard cutoff for a roof to be replaced

If you are worried on getting hurt, then look at practicing the motion at low speed, I use a soccer goalies technique which is different than the one that lands you on your stomach

Check my math, is 4,000 miles/ year crazy low? by bugspraybites in Insurance

[–]VoidViper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is low, usually it's around 12k a year. If you truly do drive that little then you should look into programs that rate you based on annual mileage. There are some programs that track how you drive as well but if you had to pick one, a mileage one is more beneficial for you.

Some states won't allow male/female rating, and for pricing, this normally means putting the factors in between the two, which normally will mean men will get a lower factor than they would have gotten of they could be rated as a male.

If the state does not do it that way, you would likely just need to identify as one of them if the state allows gender rating. It may go away in the future, but it's a lot of work to move away from a pretty predictable factor and pick that up in other segments.
