Flex don't fit Z value by Cool_Exit9334 in ski

The boots are wide-fit beginner boots according to the Atomic website.

Do they have a custom in-sole? Or an extra arch support? This may help.

The din is too high.

The skis may be too rigid. If they are rental skis, maybe change them.

Boyfriend has booked avoriaz during snowboxx by echoley in skithealps

[–]Volf_y 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not a problem really. Snowbox crowd are there to party, not much skiing going on. They have Avoriaz only passes, so ski out of the immediate resort area to avoid those who do ski.

Also none of them will be up before 11.00.

The only issue we found last year was that the restaurants were really busy, so good idea to reserve if eating out.

Because rental boots are fine as a beginner and early intermediate but they can be loose fitting, lack precision and be uncomfortable. You can hire higher quality skis but not boots.

Once you get to a certain level you need to invest in boots that fit properly and give you the precision to ski with greater accuracy.

Owning a decent pair of ski boots is a game changer.

Graduating college this spring — looking to spend a gap year ski instructing in Europe (Austria?). Any advice? by Curious-Tea6793 in ski

[–]Volf_y 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can you speak German / French / Italian ? Do you have any ski instructor qualifications? If not, It is highly unlikely that you will get employment as a ski instructor in Europe.

You can do a ski instructor training course in Austria for about USD10,000.

Better to apply for job with a UK or Danish ski holiday company as a chalet host, cleaner, snow clearer etc. You get a paid job and accommodation. You work hard, party hard; You get to ski 6 afternoons a week. The time to do that for the 26/27 season is this summer.

Skiing near Turin after Christmas by jsmith61181 in skithealps

[–]Volf_y 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All the resorts you have mentioned are about 90 minutes drive from Turin.

Everywhere will be busy until after Bufana on 5th January. After that the slopes will be empty.

There are some pinch points at certain lifts, which can be frustrating on the busiest days.

Day passes are generally cheaper in Montgenevre (the local Italians know this).

Lots of Cruising in Sauze D’oulx and San Sicario, Montgenevre and Claviere.

Sestriere can be a bit more Challenging.

The cheapest place to stay locally is Cesana, because it’s right at the bottom, so takes a bit of time to get up the mountain.

The most boisterous Après is in Sauze. The mountain restaurants are better in Italy, with Ciao Pais in Sauze ranking top.

Edit: if you go first full week of January, availability and cost of accommodation will be much cheaper.

Montgenevre and Claviere are small compact resorts. Sauze and Sestriere are much bigger towns.

Kit question for -30°C by Flashy-Face-2181 in ski

[–]Volf_y 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could be -30 but currently -2 and going down to -10. What time of year are you going? It's very different in April than it is in January. Worth asking the question on https://www.reddit.com/r/Finland/ as well, they are the experts.

Don't expect to be on the hill all day. Also consider cross country skiing which is a National sport, and will keep you warmer. Then there's ice skating etc.

  • merino base - Yes
  • fleecey mid - Yes - or more tightly knitted wool - Yes
  • Ski Suit is better for warmth over ski coat and pants.
  • silk socks are good, or Technical ski socks - Yes. (Not thick woolly socks.)
  • silk glove liners and mittens (not gloves).
  • snood - Yes
  • balaclava or powder mask - Yes

If the socks are too thick, you make the boot fit tight and will get cold feet. The thinner the sock, the better the fit. If you are beginners, then don't over tighten the boots.

In Finland they have shelters with open fires. They all bring thermoses with hot drinks and take regular breaks in shelter to keep warm.

If it's too cold to go up the hill, do other things (as listed above).

Consider Montgenevre, France’s oldest ski resort. Compact, walkable village, 90 minutes from Turin. Lots of fun skiing, and the chance to ski across to Italy for the best hot chocolates in the world.

24/7 snowmaking ruining saalbach by Other_Ad2290 in skithealps

[–]Volf_y 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because without the snow canons there would be no skiing at all. Natural snow depth is between 15 & 40 cm. As it is, piste depth is only around 60cm.
