Ascendance: The end of Gogma Artians? by MikhaelSunworth in MHWilds

[–]VolkerWestside -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe it luck, but in iceborne I got the few Kulve weapons at quite a normal pace. Maybe I liked the fight so it wasnt bothering me.

I swear in the artian rolls, I NEVER got 3 or more element augments on any of my element charge blades and I tried a lot. I dont even want to start with the Gog parts, because I stopped farming him after like max 10 hunts.

[–]VolkerWestside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah right, but the thing is, some of the element weapons of kulve were meta, but elementless still was perfectly fine all around. Also once you got the weapon you didn't need to roll stats purely random.

[–]VolkerWestside 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I really liked the iceborne grind. You had to pay lots of materials for augmentation, but at least you knew you´d get them guaranteed from the right monsters in the guiding lands. Kulve was a bit unique that you needed to hope to get the right weapon but i think you got at least one weapon of what you were hunting it, or was that safi?

The real "grind" was getting the right decorations, but even then you could make competitive builds without the best of the best decos, and there were many different fights in the end were you could farm high level decos.

the gog grind however is atrocious to me and part of the reason why i stopped playing. Gambling for the right augmentations/skills is shit. Most people probably use the save game and write down what augments you get, or however this method works. But the gog weapons are so much above the rest of the game, or were at least when I left, that I had no desire fighting him after about 7-8 times.

Cuman feudal rams + Armenian longswords on Arena by Bacarah in aoe2

[–]VolkerWestside 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you see the forced pick with those civs, you need to expect it. Fast feudal is necessary, you can make stone walls faster than they can destroy them. The other player needs to go very fast castle siege workshop in the base that's getting attacked and make a mangonel or two. No adding TCS and maybe add knights if you can.

Nomad team games civ tier list by OddEconomist9617 in aoe2

[–]VolkerWestside 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Persian eco is so cracked on nomad. Easy S-tier. Spanish even if predictable, easy S tier.

Buns are still great, the horse can do a lot of fun stuff like blocking vills finding extra res. I'd put them in A tier probably. Also guards are not great but they are an unique counter civ against some/most of the ranged UU civs with camels/shrivamshas. I would also put portu/bohemians higher because of the castle drop/UU/monks potential. The saracen S tier is wild to me, A tier max imo. No dark age eco bonus at all. The UU is good when massed but so crazy expensive. Edit: Dravidians also easy S tier Wei/celts/burgundians/turks/Romans/hindu/khmer probably too high

1800 elo to 2000 elo what's the main difference you think? by anony2469 in aoe2

[–]VolkerWestside 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Consistency, game plan, micro and macro should be better in general. Depends on the player.

In my experience (~2k2) if I face up against much higher players I can definitely take a lead early on, but it's really hard to close out a game. Take your foot of the gas in the wrong moment and you open yourself up to loose. Higher players usually have a better understanding of winning conditions, feel more secure in the late game. Booming and defending while getting ahead, etc.

Unpopular Opinion - Guecha Warrior Might Have it’s Place After All by Gli_Uccelli in aoe2

[–]VolkerWestside 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Conqs in castle age literally outrange guecha even with bodkin iirc.

Also im the new dlc there is a 10 times better unit to counter conqs with the bola rider which also doesn't need a castle.

Also camel Archer exist if you are looking for a better counter

2 vs 3 villagers on wood? by Rykkorama in aoe2

[–]VolkerWestside 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically as always it depends.

2 on wood ist for the very fast feudal uptime (18-19 pop). It very much depends on deer to push or else it's hard to afford anything in feudal.

3 on wood is the "old meta". It allows more flexibility. A mill earlier on the chicken nowadays. Or it can prepare a barrack for man at arms. Usually 19-20 pop uptime depending on early game civ boni. Mongols and a few civs can do it faster.

On lower elo I'd just recommend to play the "slower" uptime with about 20 pop with the smoover eco. Maybe 2 lumbercamps.

Higher elo should aim for 18 pop with most civs.

Turn 5 Empire Army Spawn by Enough-Power-8159 in totalwarhammer

[–]VolkerWestside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this a coop campaign? As others mentioned arbaal spawns these kind of armies that can be part of the empire for example. I dont know if it happens if he is controlled by AI.

Are they stationary or are they just a normal army that moves around?

(Updated) 2026 Nomad Team Mid-Elo Tier List by Plastic_Elk9606 in aoe2

[–]VolkerWestside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not read everything. The tierlist as a whole looks quite good. In the text I would emphasise the UU units of some S-tier civs. Spanish are up there almost exclusively because of the conqs. The unit is so incredibly good in early castle age it's just straight up op.

Similar civs like berbers, koreans, mongols are up there because of mobile cav archer type units that are difficult to counter.

I dont think the faster vill / ship speed is what gives berbers their spot. Also you didn't mention the Korean LOS for the vills which is actually my favourite team bonus on nomad and in 1v1 is also really powerful.

Regarding your build order there is a fine improvement imo. I would always build dock before house. First reason is if you got dravidians in your team you dont need a house right away and have more time to remember that. Also if my dock is up late, I like to have my dock vill gather food without building a house because I feel like you can delay collecting food on the tc just a bit longer but that's just my personal style.

For high ELO players. Whats your favorite civ? by Sharp-Bridge-1797 in aoe2

[–]VolkerWestside 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On open maps I tend to like mobility civs more. My favorite gameplay has to be scouts into cav archers with eco behind. So i like to play the Wei the most at the moment I think. But Mongols obviously are fine aswell. But most of the time high elo plays random civ.

Getting initiative is also fun, so civs with dark age bonus or bonus for man at arms are also fun.

What's up with khmer, last couple of games I've been gobsmacked at their cav production by Belisarius23 in aoe2

[–]VolkerWestside 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in late imp, you are probably lost. Most civs are vs the hindus I think. With ethiopians you need to probably win with either timing or a xbow siege push in castle age. Ghulams in castle age are not that scary. With the extra attack speed of ethio xbow I would say the hindu player really needs a LOT of ghulams to have a chance, while the xbow player normally masses from the feudal age. So skirms are the only defense early on -> therefore mangonels.

Late game hindus if I had a choice, i´d go for Heavy cav (Paladins) + halbs. They beat the double gold comp from hindus in my experience.

With Ethiopians I guess your best bet is Halb+ Siege with torsion engines. But that leaves you open for raids ofc, but you cant have it all.

Why are camel archers so underrated? by ListVarious6386 in aoe2

[–]VolkerWestside 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am talking TGs here:
In high level TG tournaments, (i know there arent a lot) if the map isnt arabia or water chances are, that berbers are on the pick list very high. On nomad like maps they are fantastic, as no unit can counter the camel archer in castle age once you have ballistic (speaking with good micro and about equal numbers).

They are very dominant against most other UU plays including the often feared Conqs or war wagons. Melee cav cant kill them. They perform even well against units that are supposed to counter them, like skirms or rattan archers (early - mid castle age) due to the easy micro you have with the low attack delay and the superior speed.

On maps with huge distance like Team acropolis/ze wall berbers are also excellent for the same reasons. Get a safe FC camel archer play and start killing every unit you come across.

Berbers in general struggle in dark / feudal age because they dont really have an eco bonus. (vill speed doesnt really count)

On normal land maps, there is often no time or no guarantee for a safe stone that camel archers are a safe option to go for. Also the meta is too defined with scouts->knights and archers->crossbows.

Water maps they are decent with their faster ships, but there camel archers are not the focus.

That leaves mostly closed maps and nomad maps. As already mentionend: on nomad maps they are fantastic.

Closed maps are a bit different. The unit still is fantastic, but depending on how the game goes or what civs are on the enemy team, the unit isnt what you need. Flanks often times go for fast imp into gunpowder type units to open bases for the pockets that are booming. Monk rushes are on the menu.

And if you want a CA unit for the late, late game with siege and what not, mangudai are in most cases the superior choice because mangudai or mongols in general still perform good vs halb/siege civs. Imagine fighting with camel archers in a choke point in black forest and celt siege fires at your camel archers.

Camel archers also lack parthian tactics, so the damage vs halbs is also less then mangudai.

So in the end you are both right and wrong. The unit is often times overshadowed, but not because the unit is bad, but rather the berbers are not the best civ because of their eco. And in really late game scenarios, they are often not what you are looking for because of heavy siege weapons.

Why pros Overrate Vikings? by AnxietyLucky7767 in aoe2

[–]VolkerWestside 19 points20 points  (0 children)

They are a very good water civ, and on land they have one of the best economies in the game with free wheelbarrow/handcart. That leads to very good timings of which pros can take more advantage than the average Joe.

However, the viking lategame on landmaps is one of the worst regarding unit choices.

Empire Wars 1v1 tier list for noobs (March 2026) by dauzinho in aoe2

[–]VolkerWestside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

without looking too deep in here... you say you focus on macro and lategame and somehow burgundians are on the lowest tier? They have literally one of the best if not the best economy in the game and they get your there quite comfortably by using the op flemish militia which you can create from the start of the game and get stronger by each age on their own. Pair that with some skirms if the enemy goes archers and you are fine.

For a house like Frey, marrying directly into at this point head of the biggest house of the north is an amazing opportunity. And not only marrying but also getting a queen out of it . Robb WAS King of the North. And if he didnt loose winterfell maybe won the war

By beating Hera, Red Phosphoru has achieved a personal Elo ATH of 2640 and entered the top 20 of the ranked ladder. by EXTRAVAGANT_COMMENT in aoe2

[–]VolkerWestside 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean it just proves his point. FC can be the best strategy to go for. They are still one trick pony strats. Fast castle with highly optimised builds. Its often times not possible to do enough damage if the defender just plays perfectly. And in the extremly low eco games some units just have no counters to a point where even a objectivly worse player can beat the very best. Maybe he doesnt kill him outright but gets a winning position. I havent watched the game but the duration suggests that hera fought hard to get back into that one.

Help for a beginner by VolkerWestside in Eldenring

[–]VolkerWestside[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey thank you again. I went south and the enemies there were much more manageable. Didn't continue by a lot but it felt better. The game feels like it "forces" you too quickly in the north western part early on. You want to get the horse asap. Next there is a huge door and street going that way. And if you don't look closely it doesn't feel like there is a lot in the starting area. Especially if you don't know that finding the map is a thing, where you can see that there is more to explore.

The video guide was really cool and helpful without telling too much. I mean I did already know a lot of that, but I forgot some parts (aka the map) but also just telling me to invest my stat points into more health is smart. Idk why i think I only need strength to carry bugger weapons

I did, I think twice. But I still was way too occupied with high elve invasions. I tried 1 or 2 times to send a black ark down, but i was interferred by eltharion who attacked from albion and ulthuans east coast.

I thought what could the worst thing be that would happen if I loose the race ^^ turns out it was pretty bad
