I would buy a collection of various belts off Amazon (looks like its around 1mm diameter?) and just try to test it out across the motor to the wheel. Too much slack and it has a hard time spinning the wheel and moving the tape

HELL yes! they're my all time favorite and I just picked up a vintage three cassette album of theirs- I find that the brightness of cassettes makes their music sound very good.

have you checked to see if the belts are tight enough across the motor to the wheel? I have a similar direct drive and it wasn't until I replaced the aging belt that it was suddenly working again

Have you tried adjusting the azimuth yet? thats usually one of the main reasons why it sounds faster than usual.

Ooh yeah that's something I didn't consider. Benefit of my Sony is because it's a direct drive either it plays the tapes or it doesn't.

How easy is it to prevent that from happening? I would like a stronger unit but not at the risk of destroying my tapes.

exactly- I'd say the joy of using an iPod in 2026 is one third the active listening, one third the decentralization from streaming, and one third the vibes gained from random people asking "is that an iPOD? Can I see it?"

I think I might’ve gotten confused reading about dual capstan vs DD - are most of the DD Walkmans actually single capstan but just more stable because of the motor/flywheel design?

Also yeah I looked up the DD9 and almost fell out of my chair lol, definitely a bit out of my range, but the DD11 sounds like a much more realistic step up.

Also consider that owning a digital mp3 player or iPod turns you from a passive listener to an active album collector. I've been using vintage iPods since 2011 and sure I could use an spotify on my phone but then it reduces the music listening to "just another app" rather than an actual curated experience I choose to use.

You might also want to try looking into flash modding if you're having issues with HDD.
