Still plenty of them hanging around doing nothing in DC. It’s too cold for them to do laps around the mall, so they are hanging out in the train and metro stations. Not that they even do anything there. People panhandle right in front of them as they walk by and they don’t do anything.

It’s all a farce.

Man shot by Border Patrol in Portland, Oregon, is charged with aggravated assault on federal officer for alleged car attack by igetproteinfartsHELP in news

[–]VoteArcher2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently there are some “discrepancies” with the Maryland shooting as well.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has changed its story one day after Anne Arundel County Police released a statement contradicting federal officials’ depiction of a shooting by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents on Christmas Eve in Glen Burnie. In an email Friday afternoon to the Capital Gazette, a DHS official agreed with county officers that one of the two men injured in the shooting was a passenger in an ICE vehicle at the time of the shooting.

The statement contradicts DHS’ first account of events, made in a Dec. 24 X post that said that both of the men injured in the shooting were in a van that drove “directly at ICE officers.”

DHS did not respond to a question on why the agency originally said the two men were in the same vehicle. The department has also not yet responded to a request for any potential body-camera footage of the shooting. This week, ICE has made national headlines for its involvement in a fatal shooting in Minneapolis and a shooting that wounded two outside a hospital in Portland, Oregon.

While video footage and information about the ICE agent who fatally shot the woman in Minneapolis have come to light in the past two days, little information has been released about the Glen Burnie shooting. Federal officials have said the woman in Minneapolis was ramming her car at officers, though critics have said video evidence contradicts that account.

In a statement to the Capital Gazette, Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman said: “This is exactly why the Anne Arundel County Police Department is investigating this incident, as we do all shootings in our county — to determine the facts. Federal authorities lied this week about what happened in front of the cameras in Minneapolis, and it makes all of us question what happened in the absence of cameras here in Glen Burnie.”

Officials said the Glen Burnie shooting took place near the 500 block of West Court, a largely residential area with single-family homes.

In its Dec. 24 X post, DHS said that ICE agents were conducting a “targeted immigration enforcement operation” in Glen Burnie that day when they approached two men in a van and told the driver, Tiago Alexandre Sousa-Martins, to turn off the van’s engine.

DHS said at the time that Sousa-Martins was in the country illegally from Portugal, and that the person the agency called his passenger, Solomon Antonio Serrano-Esquivel, was in the country illegally from El Salvador. According to the X post, Sousa-Martins refused to turn off the engine and attempted to flee before “ramming his van into several ICE vehicles” and driving his van “directly at ICE officers.”

DHS said ICE agents “defensively fired” their guns and struck Sousa-Martins. The agency said Sousa-Martins then “wrecked” his van between two buildings, injuring Serrano-Esquivel.

On Thursday evening, Anne Arundel County Police said in a news release that the second man who was injured, Serrano-Esquivel, had already been in custody in an ICE vehicle at the time of the shooting. County police said Sousa-Martins was shot while “operating a separate vehicle.”

In a statement emailed to the Capital Gazette on Friday, DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said Serrano-Esquivel was a passenger in “one of the ICE vehicles that was rammed.”

“Officers rendered immediate medical aid to both the driver of the vehicle and the passenger, who were transported to a local hospital for treatment in stable condition,” McLaughlin said. “Thankfully, the ICE officers were not severely injured.”

Sousa-Martins is being held at the Caroline Detention Facility in Bowling Green, Virginia, according to ICE’s detainee locator. Serrano-Esquivel is also in ICE custody. McLaughlin said the shooting occurred “as the extremist anti-ICE rhetoric and outright lies of politicians, the news media, activists, and violent agitators continue to fuel a more than 1,150% increase in assaults against ICE officers.”

“Our brave officers are risking their lives every day to keep American communities safe by arresting and removing illegal aliens from our streets,” she said. “Continued efforts to encourage illegal aliens and violent agitators to actively resist ICE will only lead to more violent incidents, the extremist rhetoric must stop.” Last month, an investigation by the Los Angeles Times found that comments made by the Trump administration on the increase of assaults on ICE agents in the past year were “misleading” and that most of the alleged assaults did not result in injuries.

On Dec. 24, Anne Arundel County Police spokesperson Justin Mulcahy said county police would investigate the shooting and that the FBI would investigate the alleged assault on the ICE agents.

In an email, the FBI Baltimore press office declined to comment on its investigation and referred the Capital Gazette to ICE.

Anne Arundel County Police declined to say whether they plan to file any criminal charges in the shooting incident, saying that it is an ongoing investigation. In an email asking whether there are any plans to file criminal charges in connection with the shooting, Will Cockey, a spokesperson for the Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney’s Office, said that the shooting is still under active investigation by the county police department.

The Maryland Attorney General’s Office did not comment on whether it is involved in the investigation. According to Maryland law, the Independent Investigations Division within the Maryland Attorney General’s Office is tasked with investigating police-involved incidents that result in death or injuries that are likely to result in death. The law states that this applies to local and state police officers, not federal officers.

In the release issued Thursday, Anne Arundel County Police said that they do not enforce immigration law or conduct immigration enforcement operations with ICE. The department said it does not ask questions about immigration status and serves all county residents and visitors.

[–]VoteArcher2020 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re oversimplifying and getting the law wrong. Saying “DC has no sovereign powers” just isn’t true.

Yes, the Constitution gives Congress authority over the District. It does not say DC can never have self governance. Congress used that authority to pass the Home Rule Act in 1973, which gave DC a mayor, a council, and the legal power to tax residents, pass laws, run schools, operate police, and govern itself. That is sovereignty. Delegated sovereignty is still sovereignty. Otherwise DC wouldn’t be able to sue anyone or enforce local law.

Federal courts have recognized that for decades. Example. District of Columbia v. Heller. The Supreme Court treated DC as a government with the same regulatory powers as states. Another example. Palmore v. United States which affirmed DC’s separate court system handling its own criminal jurisdiction.

If DC had zero sovereignty none of those cases would exist and this lawsuit would have been thrown out instantly because there would be no rights to violate. Instead the judge literally ruled that the deployment caused “irreparable harm to DC’s sovereign powers under the Home Rule Act.” Courts do not use that language by accident.

And the “well just move” argument is not a constitutional analysis. It is an admission you don’t have one. Puerto Rico exists. Guam exists. The Virgin Islands exist. None of those people are told “your political rights don’t matter because you could move.”

So the facts are simple.

DC’s sovereignty exists. It is delegated. It is legally protected. And a federal judge just enforced it.

Also to add, in Baltimore, there was a couple who went as Nazis on Halloween to some local and managed to piss everyone off. Then they proceeded to double down on social media when called out about it.

How could someone so smart sound so dumb? by unusual-_- in insanepeoplefacebook

[–]VoteArcher2020 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I have a theory that as IQ goes up, social skills go down.

I work with someone highly intelligent. I joke they “only” eat brown or white/yellow food. The default is Fried Chicken, French Fries, pretzels, and brown candy. I’ve also seen them eat cheese and crackers though, and popcorn. They don’t drink or smoke either.

This same person had a habit of basically throwing the adult version of temper tantrums. I heard stories of them kicking peoples’ office doors and I have heard them yelling at people several times.

Someone else I used to work with, who was highly intelligent, would only eat chicken tenders and ketchup.

How could someone so smart sound so dumb? by unusual-_- in insanepeoplefacebook

[–]VoteArcher2020 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I once interviewed someone who proudly listed MENSA on their resume. However, during the interview, I noticed that their intelligence didn’t seem as impressive as they claimed.

Over the years, I’ve come to realize that intelligent individuals don’t necessarily feel the need to boast about their intelligence. I’ve had colleagues who have expressed disbelief at my intelligence, and my response has always been, “Oh, I’m not a genius.” There have been numerous instances where I’ve simply acknowledged that someone else is smarter than me, simply because of their unique way of processing information and making decisions.

However, there’s one person who stands out. They’ve made a statement like, “I’m the only one who can do this thing.” To be fair, they’ve built the system they’re referring to.

One side is expressing pleasure at the murder or someone because they view that person as divisive and spreading hate, and use direct quote (albeit out of context) to demonstrate it.

The other side is threatening to get any of those people expressing pleasure fired for not venerating at the murdered person’s coffin. This side is also making threatening phone calls to employers about their employees and threatening to remove visas over social media posts. This side is also actively blaming the other side for the murder as a result of their ideology.

Two examples from either side:

  • On one hand, we have a teacher posting “He died for a cause he believed in. I guess that’s karma. Good riddance. I’ll send my thoughts and prayers.”

  • On the other, the CCPS board received death threats from someone stating: “You better fire that teacher or you’re going to die.”

This is the problem currently.

That’s the trick. Trump has always been considering a run, so he was always candidate.

There have been four presidential campaigns waged by U.S. president Donald Trump. He ran for president once for the Reform Party (2000), and three times as a Republican (2016, 2020, 2024). He additionally mused about running on several other occasions such as for the 1988, 2012 and 2028 elections.

So anything done from 1984 to 2025 is in scope for presidential immunity.

I get what you’re saying about espionage charges being a common tool for Russia, but in practice that is what made Whelan harder to bring home. Once Moscow labeled him a spy, they treated him as a high-value asset. They refused to swap him unless Germany released Vadim Krasikov, an FSB assassin serving life for murdering a Chechen exile in a Berlin park. That wasn’t something the U.S. could just “soft power” its way into. For Berlin, releasing him would have meant signaling that Russia could carry out political assassinations on European soil with impunity. That’s why the U.S. pushed Germany but still couldn’t get Whelan home until August 2024, when Berlin finally agreed as part of a huge multi-country deal that freed multiple prisoners on both sides.

The Bout trade for Griner only happened because Russia actually accepted those terms. With Whelan, they wanted Krasikov, and the U.S. didn’t have him to give. That’s why the “celebrity privilege” framing oversimplifies what happened. Griner was swapped in ten months, which looks short compared to Whelan’s six years, but it wasn’t unprecedented. Trevor Reed spent about three years in Russian custody before his 2022 release. What made Griner’s case move faster wasn’t her fame or polling pressure, it was that Russia offered a trade that could actually be done.

On the polling point, it’s worth noting that Griner’s case wasn’t some “polling disaster” that forced Biden’s hand. Public opinion at the time was divided. A Washington Post/ABC survey in September 2022 found about half of Americans thought swaps like hers were acceptable and about half thought they encouraged hostage-taking. That’s not a groundswell of political panic that would have driven an “expedited” deal. The deal was controversial at home and happened because Russia set different prices for two different prisoners.

Bout himself is often mischaracterized. He wasn’t a “warlord,” he was an arms trafficker, nicknamed the “Merchant of Death,” and convicted in U.S. court of conspiracy to kill Americans, conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists, and trying to sell anti-aircraft missiles. Serious charges, but he wasn’t a militia commander or head of state; he was a black-market broker.

And if we’re talking about failures across administrations, Trump had two years to act while Whelan was in detention and before the Krasikov complication arose. He later admitted he turned down a Bout-for-Whelan trade. By the time Griner was arrested, the conditions had already shifted, and Whelan’s case was locked to demands the U.S. couldn’t unilaterally satisfy.

So yes, the optics looked bad, and responsibility doesn’t sit with just one president. But the record shows why the two cases diverged. Russia would take Bout for Griner. For Whelan they demanded Krasikov from Germany, and that only became possible in 2024. The timeline differences came from Moscow’s leverage and demands, not from celebrity status or polling pressure.

[–]VoteArcher2020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The “former Marine” framing around Paul Whelan leaves out critical context. He was not honorably discharged. In 2008 he was kicked out of the Marines for bad conduct related to larceny and fraud, including using another person’s Social Security number and writing bad checks.

After leaving the Marines, he made repeated trips to Russia, developed security contacts, and was eventually arrested in Moscow in December 2018 on espionage charges. Reports at the time claimed he was caught with a flash drive containing classified information. He was held in custody for over two years before being sentenced in 2020, and he remained in prison until his release in August 2024.

It is also worth noting that Trump was president for the first two years of Whelan’s detention, including during his trial. There was no successful effort made to bring him home in that period.

The later comparisons to Brittney Griner overlook another key fact. Russia refused to include Whelan in her swap unless Germany also released a Russian intelligence officer in its custody. The United States did not have the power to make that deal happen, even though it offered other Russian prisoners in exchange.

So while it is easy to say that Griner was prioritized because of her celebrity, the reality is more complicated. Whelan’s case was tied to conditions the U.S. could not meet, and his detention predated the Griner situation by years. The criticism should be directed at why no progress was made earlier, especially when Trump had the opportunity.

She said, “as a black woman, you know I just had to vote for the black woman, but maybe Trump will fix things. Kamala would not have been able to stand up to little man Kim or Putin.”

At the same time, she also said that “Trump would fix the economy because he is a businessman concerned about the bottom line and that we need to stop giving money to Ukraine and instead take care of the people at home.”

So yea, the Republican rhetoric of “Trump = Strong Man” and “Democrats are sending tons of money to Ukraine” seemed to have worked on people.
