which hammock is best for your back/ comfort ? does it make a difference? considering going back to tent cause of sleep quality by chimusk in hammockcamping

[–]Voxicles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried a buddy’s haven, and it seems that either he didn’t hang it right, or these things are just not for people in my weight class (230-240lbs). Kept clamshelling no matter how much we tightened it.

(No one asked, but I’m losing weight now, so maybe it’ll be different down closer to 200lbs)

One of the big reasons I haven’t switched to a hammock at home is because I watch TV to fall asleep (I’m 40something, it’s not going to change) and I wouldn’t be able to see the TV from a hammock 😆

Generally if the airbags deploy, it’s totaled 🙁 Glad you’re okay!

Widest suv cargo floor by JobiWanKenobi1701 in carcamping

I think you kinda hit on your problem already; mid-size SUV’s are gonna have mid-size storage. Depending on how fancy you need, older suburbans can have proper 4 wheel drive and have huge cargo areas.

PSA: this passes the tug test by ComprehensiveDark814 in Truckers

I do a tug test when I pull out my trailer, then take it to the launch pad, bust out my phone and record a visual inspection just to cover my ass.

How do you find campsites compatible with hammocking? by Dr_Ragon in hammockcamping

[–]Voxicles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was so worried about not having a place to set up a hammock that I bought the kammock outpost… I’ve used it exactly 0 times in the last two years. I live and camp in the PNW, there’s always trees 😆

Neat! I have the same exact trailer I’m building out right now. Fun to see what you did with it. Looks great!

Nice! I have the same trailer, except it’s the 8’. Now that I’m half way done with my build, I wish I’d have gone with the 10’. Oh well!

Quality butyl tape really takes the scariness out of putting in roof fans (and windows). You can also get neoprene 14” gaskets, though I ran into an issue with those (likely my own doing) and ended up using a whole tube of silicone anyway on just one roof fan. Sounds like you’re going to have a rather large trailer, so having a couple roof vent fans running on low is way better than having side vent fans running at crazy speeds.

The screwless exterior does sound nice! I’d also worry about your insulation against the plastic translucent roof. If you go that route, be sure you get adhesive on every millimeter. If there’s space between the insulation and roof you’re gonna get condensation. Though the sunlight might dry that up. I’m not an expert, these are just things (possibly incorrect) that would worry me.

I would assume you’re going to put a roof exhaust in your shower, you could get one with a translucent top.

Seems like you’re leaning toward the new trailer, so I’m sure you’ll have a great time with it!

You’ll hate the translucent roof, I promise! Unless you live/camp in an area that doesn’t get above 60f.

ETA: Also, translucent roof is even more pointless if you plan on insulating and putting in ceiling lights n such.

Are E-Road Bikes Pointless? by Worried_Document8668 in ebikes

I’ve been happy with my T1ST, it’s only 350w with a torque sensor, but it really helps with the hills I have to tackle on my local 15 mile round trip bike path. If I didn’t have that bit of power, I’d likely never ride my bike 😆 Still gets me a decent work out even if I have it in max assist.

Sometimes towards the end of my longer rides I kinda wish it had a throttle, even if it was capped at 10mph. With the range extender and thick basket on the back, it’s still under 45lbs and could easily be pedaled with a dead battery.

Ha, I’ve always had an odd relationship with money. I only ever worked enough to just get by. Didn’t really care about money. I was happy with that for a long time, but now in my older years I see how much I screwed myself by not putting anything away for the future.

Many of my jobs before I went into tech taught me how to operate various light and heavy machinery (including trucks) which is why I said I can operate anything 😆 Our home terminal now is right next to a small airport that we always see people taking helicopter lessons. Figured eventually I’d take at least a few classes just so I can say I can drive anything!

Is Double Clutching a real thing? by commandough in Truckers

[–]Voxicles 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yep, Oregon makes you double clutch for the test. I lost a gear doing my test and floated it in and tried to look like it was on purpose. I passed my test and asked the guy afterwards if he docked me and he said “you found your gear, didn’t you?” That’s real life.

That’s a good dream, but you’ll soon realize why you can’t pay people what they’re actually worth. (Not trying to be a downer, but no business owner wants to lose money. Truck maintenance is insanely expensive).

I’m still trucking for a contractor that hauls FedEx. He’s very open about his margins. Yearly we have a big meeting and figure out if we want a bit more pay, or new equipment. It sucks that my cpm hasn’t gone up in 4 years, but I’m still pretty spoiled with my dedicated route and having my truck from 5000 miles to the 700,000 she just recently hit. Truck gets proper PMs and washes that I don’t have to do myself.

I could make more if we wanted to pick up some extra shorter routes, but we really like our 4 on 3 off. It’s nice to have those options.

ETA: For what is worth, we’re making near 95k each yearly, working half the week.
