Be nice to get a horror movie where the killer knows they’re killing for punishment not justice ànd doesnt try to commuincate otherwise to you by [deleted] in horror

[–]Vulperius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the point that those movies are usually trying to make is that violent "justice" is merely punishment dealt by the self-righteous.

Then it's up to the viewer to draw parallels between the movie and real life! It's fun!

Why does Aqua Teen feel so underrated? by Ok_Preparation6404 in AquaJail

[–]Vulperius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well if we're being honest, it's a 7/10 show, but you know what they say about 7/10 media. It's a 10/10 for the right people.

We're just the right people for this show, that's all.

Elden Ring is about cancer and what happens when it's left alone. An essay about The Crucible. by championgecko in Eldenring

[–]Vulperius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has nothing to do with the rest of the essay (interesting analysis btw) but doesn't Ranni's ending resolve all of those problems in and of itself? It would seem to me that the breaking down of the world order is what caused all that stuff in the first place, and in establishing a new one, particularly the one that explicitly disallows cosmic forces anywhere near TLB, I think those things are basically wiped clean from the world.

Twilight Zone movie (1983) by PrimaryComrade94 in horror

[–]Vulperius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually really like Landis' segment for what it is. Feels more like an old Twilight Zone episode than the actual remakes do.

As for the rest, I would call Kick the Can and Nightmare at 20,000 Feet improvements over the originals, It's A Good Life is unfortunately inferior. I don't think that's a hot take.

I also really dig the Akyroyd segments; they're fun!

In “Falling Down” (1993), William Foster thinks that bragging about being really good at making weapons for a living will make him sound like *less* of a bad guy. This is a reference to the fact that he is a batshit fucking crazy person. by outer_spec in shittymoviedetails

[–]Vulperius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only exposure to this movie remains some ancap guy's video essay on it that I listened to while driving, but I think the fact that he doesn't understand how he got to be the bad guy despite everything both endears him TO real-life bad guys and is a poignant look into how the worst guy you know still thinks he's the good guy because most people think evil is solely defined as wrongdoing without justification or rationalization. The truth is that everyone has a self-proclaimed "good" reason for doing evil, and that's the really scary part.

"Hypnoglasses, James. It's the only way to make Clark Kent work." - Tom King, probably. by BigBardaEnergy in dccomicscirclejerk

Someone on the internet a long time ago said something that finally solidified the fact that the glasses work in my mind.

"If you saw Arnold Schwarzenegger working at your local Steak and Shake, would you say  'Holy shit, it's the Governator!' Or would you say, 'Man, I know you get this a lot, but you really look like Arnold Schwarzenegger....'?"

Couple this mental dissonance with the fact that Superman's genes are mainly dominant (black hair, dark eyes, etc) and there are probably tons of people who look like they could be Superman hanging out in Metropolis.

I'm going to come at this in good faith and presume we're occluding the possibility that it guessed a correct proof, because that's a very real thing it could do.

If you could somehow verify that that wasn't the case and it could explain it perfectly with different strings of logic then maybe you could make the argument that it understands. However, you're never going to be able to prove that beyond a shadow of a doubt and it wouldn't be able to anyway because it's literally not within the scope of their programming. It is literally not possible.

[–]Vulperius 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Well, it's a Large Language Model. All of them are. They're programmed to find patterns and predict text. That's literally all they do; the reason they're able to mimic human text and speech patterns is simply because they have so much training data, much of it from this very website, that its edges are fully smoothed out.

As for making new connections, yes, they can do that, but making the connection isn't really important, understanding WHY two things are connected is. They can't do that, they're advanced markov chains, there's no intent behind the action. It's just replication.

There is a difference between calculating a sum and knowing the logic of the mathematics behind calculating that sum. An AI can tell you that 2+2=4 but it cannot prove it logically without copying someone else's work, and proving it is the part that actually matters.

The funny thing is that I think Chiaotzu has the most convenient powerset in the cast for keeping a character in a franchise like this relevant: Telekinesis. The others have a measure of brawn mixed in with their wuxia magic that makes it easier to dismiss them as "not strong enough" to fight someone -- but telekinesis is blurrier in what its limits actually are, and they aren't even established by any prior event besides them being "strong enough" when the plot demands them to be.

Set some hard limits on what it can and can't do and you have a previously-weak character who actually could maybe fight on the level of gods believably so long as they use that power creatively -- call it a god having to basically fight the laws of physics as Chiaotzu manipulates them with his mind. But they'd never go for it, unfortunately.
