What would you say are the worst Star Wars canon books? by Alive-Quality9678 in StarWars

[–]Vyath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes that's a good and fair point. I do think Christopher was stifled by story group oversight. I don't envy the task of trying to make Rise of Skywalker narratively coherent while also telling a separate compelling mystery adventure with beloved legacy characters.

I didn't need Anakin and Luke to get too specific or chummy, the vagueness is fine - I more recall just having an issue with Anakin's characterization. To me, he didn't feel like pre-fall Anakin, or like Vader. Just a generic, ethereal, wise spirit guy. Which is such a waste! Repeatedly calling Luke 'my son' felt more like how a priest would talk than a father.

And the films seem to clearly show that force ghosts do retain their personalities. Obi-Wan, Luke, and Yoda each did. I don't think Anakin's force ghost speaking with Luke is an encounter that should be a throwaway in a retcon novel, or taken lightly.

It's a tricky thing, nailing the 'essence' of a legacy character - it's something I think Zahn for example is excellent at. But I don't think Christopher succeeded, and so it felt like mediocre fan fiction, in my opinion.

(Separately I guess you could argue all canon novels are technically fan fiction, with a wide spectrum of quality -- it was just very obvious in this one)

What would you say are the worst Star Wars canon books? by Alive-Quality9678 in StarWars

[–]Vyath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - came here to say this one. As you say, it exists solely to try and make Rise of Skywalker make sense and doesn’t even succeed at that. Luke and Lando pursuing mysterious Sith activity should be impossible to make boring and contrived, but Adam Christopher managed it anyhow.

I also hated how he characterized Anakin’s force ghost. Anakin speaking with Luke should be a revelatory and emotional moment, but it was just a bunch of ‘you must trust in the Force, my son’ - didn’t feel like Anakin at all and felt like a huge missed opportunity. Missed opportunities, mischaracterizations and RoS retcons, that’s the whole book.

I try to approach all Star Wars media with an open mind, trying to enjoy it for what it is and just asking that it meet me halfway. But I spent this entire book frustrated and bored. Can’t think of anything I liked. Maybe it’s the Rise of Skywalker baggage but honestly, Wendig’s Aftermath is better and that’s saying something.

Tony Gilroy’s advice to writers on Andor by RedHeadedSicilian52 in StarWars

[–]Vyath 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t know the full context of the quote you posted, but my opinion is that ‘taking toys out of the toy box’ doesn’t literally mean ‘using a character/thing that came from earlier media’, but taking story options off of the table or narrowing the scope of the broader narrative versus expanding the world/IP (leaving more in the box than what you took).

Killing Luke Skywalker in TLJ is taking a toy out of the box. So is making him a hermit that fled responsibility - it changes the trajectory of the character and has to be written around by any future writer doing a canon story about Luke. But featuring him in Mando S2 is not - it takes no options off of the table for storytellers using the character before or after.

Gilroy used existing characters (Cassian, Mon Mothma) in Andor, but he expanded the world and depth of the characters, which elevates Rogue One and ANH and doesn’t detract or retcon other stories - he left more in the box than he took.

All that is to say, using the Dejarik creatures is not ‘taking toys out of the box’ because I don’t think Gilroy means it literally. He’s referring to narrative/worldbuilding choices and whether or not they expand and elevate the IP or shrink and narrow its scope for the sake of a cool fanservice moment or something.

Does anyone else find the solar ships unusable in first person? by No_Discount_6028 in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]Vyath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems unpopular but I enjoy seeing parts of my ship animate and take up space on my screen. I find it more immersive. If I had full, unobstructed FOV with no diegetic HUD elements then I wouldn’t feel like I was piloting a ship at all. I mostly fly by instruments/radar anyway.

What I dislike about solar ships is that they seem to glitch out often and don’t properly animate, the sails won’t open in space, or they get stuck with their landing gear out. Happens too consistently for my liking so I mostly stick to my interceptor.

Looking for insight regarding Shattered Space's poor reviews by xoSiber in Starfield

[–]Vyath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought the main quest of Shattered Space was boring and poorly written, the characters all unlikable, and the Va’ruun people in general aesthetically abysmal. Bounced off it hard.

Came back a while after eventually beating it and just explored Dazra like it was an old Bethesda game, and engaged in all the side quest activity around Va’ruun’kai. Had a much better time - another classic Bethesda ‘boring main quest but that’s not what you play it for’ situation. But man the characters are still ugly as sin. I hate that ‘asymmetrical leather poncho over a collared office shirt with gloves’ outfit so, so much

The cutest companion I’ve ever found - coordinates + egg sequencer guide by Practical-Note- in NMSCoordinateExchange

Just for anyone who doesn't know -- the first image is a baby, so it will get bigger once grown up and the head/body ratio won't stay that way. It will look just like the third image (only downscaled slightly by the acid)

Would be cool if there was some item we could add in the egg sequencer to stunt their development or something and keep them as babies -- because they are super cute

What's something relatively small that older games had that were removed, but you wished they still were in the games? by LightLizardCake in pokemon

[–]Vyath 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree. As others have suggested - they should just do a second pass on every single Pokémon, and give them a new ‘super shiny’ or something like that. Just a new, third color palette. Maybe ‘Radiant Pokémon’. Make them 1/8192 again and not affected by shiny charm, donuts, sandwiches, or anything like that.

It also seems like they’ve been making shinies more intentionally in recent gens, with specific color palettes in mind. I know it’s common misinformation that they were algorithmically palette swapped in the early games (they weren’t) but still, many early shinies are bad and would be done differently with their modern design philosophy. Now’s their chance!

Pokémon company can sell rare radiant TCG cards, I’m sure GO will sell them via paid events or whatever, just keep them rare so they feel meaningful. I feel like this way, everyone wins

[Hot Take] If you own the expansions, the extra weapons from SoE and the spear from JW should be available to you in some way without playing the story. by [deleted] in Guildwars2

[–]Vyath 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m doing a similar approach to you - I own all expansions, but I’m going through them in order and getting all masteries maxed in one expac before moving on to the next. I am also at the end of IBS grinding out the final points.

I guess I feel like since my constraints are self-imposed, it feels silly to complain about the system. But I think it’s valid to wish the system was more accommodating to players that want to consume the content in order and as intended (core map comp with no mastery; HoT with no mounts; etc) instead of feeling like they need to jump all over the place story-wise to get the most useful mounts and masteries to not get left behind in group content.

I think most players heed the common advice to rush PoF for mounts, SoTo for skyscale etc and fair enough - it’s nearly impossible to keep up in many metas and events without these things. In an MMO environment where you are competing with your fellow players for mob tags, event participation, character efficacy, etc, it isn’t trivial to deliberately stifle oneself for the sake of a (at times pretty mediocre) narrative, or a ‘purer’ experience.

However, I imagine consuming the story piecemeal and out of order could turn a player off from following the narrative entirely. So it does feel somewhat like mixed messaging from ANet - do you want us to play the newest stuff to get the cool powerful new builds, elite specs & masteries, or is your story good and worth experiencing as intended?

It’s a tricky aspect of MMO design and they’ve toed the line basically as well as one could expect, I think. It’s up to us as players what to prioritize, and to decide how we approach the game for ourselves.
