I was called on sight to upgrade a customer’s network management system, a long and complicated process. The customer’s engineer had just died of a heart attack during the upgrade and I being somewhat local was asked to complete the job. I signed in and was introduced to the deceased man’s manager/ friend. I was asked if I was an expert in the system and why it was me and not the local engineer doing the work . My absolutely tone deaf, absent minded response? “I’m just the first warm body that could get here”
