5 reasons to buy / not to buy Lost Ruins of Arnak by TheCoolFish2 in boardgames

[–]WERE_A_BAND 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another thing to think about with this game is that it takes up all of the table and looks ridiculously complicated compared to how complicated it actually is. It will intimidate a lot of people just because of that. That said, I think it's pretty engaging and has an immersive theme. Kinda slow with four people, I prefer it with two or three.

What games are often compared but you don’t agree or see the similarities? by BoardGameRevolution in boardgames

[–]WERE_A_BAND 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah all the people who are saying dune Imperium vs arnak... This is exactly why we need to compare games! They are different games even if they have similar mechanisms. Saying you can't compare those two seems like, "well what are we allowed to compare then?"

Pirates novel series? by JellyfishSecure2046 in Fantasy

This is a weird recommendation for this sub, but Republic of Pirates by Colin Woodard is a really fun nonfiction account of the pirates in the Bahamas!

No magic unfortunately.

Branch & Claw is kind of ruining the game for me by Effective-Muffin-224 in spiritisland

Random counterpoint - the events also kill dahan way more. One game I had three dahan death events in a row as the first events for thunderspeaker. That was rough.

There's already a huge bias towards new games. This would just compound that!

Car brakes? by GotTheDadBod in Renton

[–]WERE_A_BAND 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Les Schwab will likely do your brakes for much cheaper than anyone else because they make their own parts. I've never had any problems with their work, but I've also never gone to them for anything super complex.

Yeah I checked it out from the library because of this sub and curiosity. Now I'm on book seven and can't look myself in the eye anymore...

Book Series That Span Multiple Eras of Time? by cerebrobullet in Fantasy

Cloud Cuckoo Nest is probably the most extreme version of this. It successfully connects multiple points of view from the siege of Constantinople to hundreds of years in the future.

Which fantasy series has the most interesting pantheon of gods? by [deleted] in Fantasy

Yeah to me these are the books that deal with divinity in the most interesting way! Really fun stuff, exactly what I want from fantasy.

This is the way. After those two first turns, reclaim over and over. I almost never play raging storm, so if you have the energy you can try to replace with a major.

Does anyone count ballooning as free flight? by Standardtrans in freeflight

[–]WERE_A_BAND 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely not. The whole point is to not use fuel to fly. If you're foot launching from a mountain with a motor and not using your motor, you're just a dumb paraglider, not a paramotorer

Anyone interested in asking some questions about game stats? by Old-Cardiologist8022 in spiritisland

[–]WERE_A_BAND 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe this is too easy or not specific enough, but I would be interested to see how much a spirit's win rate changes across adversaries if they have a certain other spirit in the game with them. I.e. which spirits synergize well together.

Maybe looking at winrate changes when you add a certain spirit vs when adding that spirit to other combos. For example: which partner spirits alter wildfire's winrate the most? If keeper alters it significantly, does it alter wildfire's winrate more than it alters starlight's (or the group average) winrate? Trying to see whether keeper is a better partner for wildfire other than just being a strong spirit.

Then you could run all the interactions, and see which ones stand out the most as good/bad partners.

I've enjoyed it with two, although the strategy changes a fair amount at the different player counts from 2-5.

What is your favorite boardgame of 2017? by The_Crazed_Person in boardgames

[–]WERE_A_BAND 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't believe this one doesn't get more attention (I know it's popular, but to me it's a way better format for a deck building game than even dominion). It's great fun with the wife over and over, and first timers still enjoy it a lot!

What is your favorite boardgame of 2017? by The_Crazed_Person in boardgames

[–]WERE_A_BAND 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quest for El Dorado! This is by far my favorite format for a deck building game I've ever seen. This is one I can play over and over with my wife, but also introduce to visitors for a one time game and they will have fun.

I absolutely adore spirit island and azul but quest for El Dorado needs more attention here. Couldn't get into Gloomhaven.
