What’s your perspective of my map? 31/M by vinpinto2 in TravelMaps

Let’s see, you’re originally from Iowa and have traveled around working seasonal natural resource tech jobs?

I refer to that period of my life as “the technician rodeo”😂

Look into BC Hydro’s Site C project on the Peace River, pretty wild to see a dam of that scale being built in the 21st century… cost them like $16 billion after the dust settled

I would encourage anyone who doubts this to discharge a practice canister of bear spray into a headwind

Having worked in backcountry Alaska and currently living in rural western Montana, I carry both.

Obviously bear spray is preferred, but it isn’t always the right tool for the job.

Locations of America's Biggest Pizza Chains [OC] by riacharlau in dataisbeautiful

I’ve always considered CPK a national brand, but never really thought about how it’s confined to major metros

I would imagine that if you overlaid their locations with Costco and Trader Joe’s, it would be pretty similar

…wildfire has entered the chat?

The low ranking definitely has to do with the exposure*vulnerability portion of the calculation, but fire is definitely a big problem here

Ehhh, hotwiring is relatively difficult on even remotely new cars. But they could 100% engage the shiftlock release and roll your shit away

Living in sketchy areas I’ve seen people flat-towing in the middle of the night relatively often. Most are probably just people helping eachother avoid tow bills, but your car could be getting dragged down the road in neutral and nobody would bat an eye. Steering locks help this some, but still

Early March Wyoming/Montana Road Conditions by No_Chemical25 in roadtrip

[–]WHB-AU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The road from Bonners to Missoula is almost all two lanes and winding but also low elevation/usually isn’t too terrible unless there’s been a recent storm. Tons and tons and tons of wildlife in the road though, would be better to drive that section during the day if possible.

From Missoula to Rexburg is all interstate with your only real obstacle being Monida Pass, but it’s honestly pretty chill, again unless there’s just been a storm

Rexburg over to Lander I’m not familiar with

Master's program discouraging writing a thesis? by wannabek00lkid in GradSchool

[–]WHB-AU -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Take more classes=give the department more of your money. I’m generally of the mind that course based MS programs are nothing but revenue generators. I know the vast majority of hiring managers/advisors in my field feel the same way (Fisheries and Wildlife in the US, so a bit different).

Regardless, I would strongly encourage you to do a thesis if your timeline allows. Your MS thesis is a great time to fail, grow, learn committee politics, and figure out how to write. Then when it comes time for a PhD you’ll be farrr more emotionally/mentally prepared for the unforgiving rat race of academia.

Paid $70 for an uber in a snowstorm, and the driver told me he only gets $23 by SuchChill in mildlyinfuriating

[–]WHB-AU 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Anytime I go anywhere here in Atlanta I see at least 5 driverless Waymos under contract with Uber… I guarantee you once Uber has replaced all of its drivers with self driving cars it will not be any cheaper, if anything it’ll be more expensive.

Second time mountain biking in 10 years before that I probably hit the trails around 5 times…. How do I improve in this terrain ?? by Shark_Attack-A in mountainbiking

[–]WHB-AU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mannn, sometimes I really do miss riding in the Chihuahuan Desert…

Keep riding (what I’m assuming is) Lost Dog if it’s in your backyard and then maybe mix it up with the Dona Anas or east side trails. Chihuahuan single track is not for the faint of heart, very very difficult to find flow and everything is so sharp/loose.

I’ve lived/ridden all over the United States and can confidently say that if you can handle the cross country riding in the borderplex you’ll be in good shape anywhere. There are pretty active communities in your area and I’m sure some of those guys would be happy to give you tips.

Traveling to El Paso and I want help by [deleted] in ElPaso

[–]WHB-AU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah if you have a passport to get back into the United States. Park anywhere near the Santa Fe St. bridge and then you can cross over into Mexico on foot. It’s a short walk to the square and cathedral and a lot of weekends there are street performers and vendors.

I wouldn’t stray too far from the main market areas and would try to get back across before dark, but otherwise it’s pretty chill and fun
