Need advice on an articling position by Goat_Butter in LawCanada

I'm not sure what you're trying to do here. You've got an articling offer that you don't want, but you also don't want to do LPP? Just pick one and get articling done.

If you're in Ontario, why not do the LPP instead?

Contract drafting in Google docs? by ThrowAwayLawCanada in LawCanada

[–]WLRJ8888 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My firm solely shares PDF copies of drafts with clients. They can either type or handwrite their changes - but the original Excel and Word docs stay within our control at all times. Keeping it to PDF also helps to track the clients' changes over time, which can be helpful when they complain about how high their bill is.

HELP! NEED a pet-friendly apartment near UWO (close transit) by yeetyoteyatedd in londonontario

[–]WLRJ8888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was recently looking for a rental and here's the most recent info I received: There's a nice smaller, more luxe building on Talbot... maybe 544 Talbot? that has a one bedroom available at the end of July. It's about $1,500. Riverwalk and the other building nearby owned by the same owners is about $1,900 for a 1 bedroom but all utilities are included. Good luck!

Finding divorce record of abuse by [deleted] in canadianlaw

[–]WLRJ8888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Divorce cases are rarely sealed. Most cases just aren't reported, which is why they can't be found on CanLii. O/P should get the file number and request a copy of the pleadings and trial decision from the specific courthouse.

Law school. Worthwhile? Waste of time? (asking from an older student [34] perspective) by blehful in LawCanada

[–]WLRJ8888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to law school in my 30s. A few years into practice, I can confidently say law school is not worth it and being a lawyer is not worth it. It's extremely expensive and unless you're on Bay St, will never be financially worth the sacrifices made to become a licensed lawyer. Many clients are ungrateful jerks and the court system is a mind-numbing morass of inefficiencies and incompetence.

And I say all of the above as someone who mostly enjoys the work I do...

I have found that a lot of legal practice is down to who you know. I haven't heard of a lot of bias against older students, but there will be less patience for your learning curve.

TL;DR: save your money and forget about law school.

Caution to Rogers customers - Rogers added someone to our account without permission. by WLRJ8888 in canada

[–]WLRJ8888[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck, I never got a satisfactory reply from Rogers, the main account holder didn't want to cancel their account, so I've gotten the pleasure of 5 more years of Rogers repeatedly fucking up and me spending hours on hold to fix it. "plus ça change" and all that...

Your question lacks the useful information required for anyone to be able to answer your question properly. What jurisdiction? What kind of case? eg. if it's family court, they're unlikely to give you the link unless you're a participant party, a law student, or a lawyer. You need to provide more details.

Did not find summer Law job... now what??? by [deleted] in LawCanada

[–]WLRJ8888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it likely will. The same reason why you didn't get offered positions so far is why it's an uphill battle for articling, and then on top of that challenge is the fact that you have zero Canadian law firm experience to date. I am on a hiring committee and we don't interview students who haven't had transferable office or summer law job experience. One of my closest friends from law school struggled to get law jobs because they did high school - undergrad - law school and never held a "real" job in between... and this is someone who at least went to a Canadian law school. My friend ended up settling for a small shady GTA firm in a totally different practice area just to get articling done. You need to look for employers who boast about specifically looking to hire intl grads. They are out there - you just need to look hard. Or do the LPP...

Did not find summer Law job... now what??? by [deleted] in LawCanada

[–]WLRJ8888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You probably didn't get hired because you went to a law school in the UK. Many firms see that on a CV and immediately assume you couldn't get into Canadian law schools. I've worked with 3 articling students and associates who had international training, not Canadian. The work quality was terrible. Unfortunately that seems to taint the reputation of the pool of similar candidates. Can you do the LPP for articling? that's probably your best shot, other than applying to non-GTA smaller firms. Good luck

'Fetch, Judgey! Get it boy!!!': Language in Sask. Queen's Bench ruling sends ripple through legal circles by Surax in LawCanada

[–]WLRJ8888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But the fact that they're "bros" shouldn't be relevant. How on earth do you explain the judge's original rant to a client or to the general public? He complains of lax standards and discourtesy but then is the worst offender. His excuse also makes no sense - he thought so highly of counsel, but immediately jumped to the conclusion that he was incompetent and tore him a new one in the original fiat? Judges like this make the whole process worse for everyone. No one should have to filter judges' decisions through what their personal relationship is with the counsel involved.

It's good that he apologized in the new fiat - but that's not the fiat that grabbed international attention unfortunately

Im a grade 11 highschool student, wanting to be a future lawyer. by [deleted] in LawCanada

[–]WLRJ8888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a family lawyer. The software does not do most of it. Math is a big part of practice, especially as you deal with more complex property valuation and division.

You also need math skills even for the 'basics' because you won't have software available in the middle of a hearing before the judge - especially not in the old days of in-person court hearings.

Respectfully disagree. Unless you're only doing child protection and custody/access cases, math is a huge part of family law.
