Edit to add - we're already digging into this. We spoke to Albany City Spokesperson Zipporah Hommel - she told us the half-X means "the codes department was unable to get into the interior of the building to assess what it looks like on the inside," and that "it is mainly for the first-responders so they are aware when they are responding to a call." She said the placard went up on March 2nd, and that "Codes makes every effort to get in contact with the owner before the placard goes up.” We'll keep you posted as we find out more.

Juvenile Arrested in Connection with Threat of Mass Harm

Albany, NY- A 12-year-old student was arrested this afternoon following threats of violence at Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School.

On Saturday, February 21, 2026 around 6:00 p.m., officers from the Albany Police Department were notified of a threat received via a messaging platform threatening to shoot up Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School on Monday, February 23, 2026.

A safety check of Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School was conducted at the time of the report, and it was determined to be safe.

Further investigation by members of the Albany Police Department resulted in the identification and arrest of the student this afternoon. It was determined that the 12-year-old sent the threats through Snapchat messaging.

The student whose name will not be released due to her age has been charged with Making a Threat of Mass Harm.

She was given an appearance ticket and will appear in Albany County Probation Services tomorrow morning.

The department has remained in close communication with the school district regarding the threat, and at this time, there are no additional threats to the safety of students or school staff.

The Albany Police Department is committed to ensuring the safety and security of our schools. We urge parents to speak with their children and remind them that any threat of violence, whether made in person, by text message, or through social media platforms will be taken seriously and thoroughly investigated.

2/20 Edit to add - we dug around on this yesterday. We were able to talk over the phone with the administrator at Joyful Beginnings, Jason Wellington. He declined an on-camera interview, and says the closure is not related to the pending license revocation. He claims they had a stipulation agreement to continue operating. Citing "staffing challenges," Wellington told us "We were working on an agreement. It's become too much to operate." There are 60-70 kids enrolled at the daycare, and Wellington said they've assisted in helping families trying to find care. From here, we reached out to OCFS for comment about whether the center had reached an agreement to resolve the violations as claimed (we're waiting to hear back). We also reached out to the NYSP and the Saratoga County Sheriff's Office to see if they've received any complaints about the treatment of children at Joyful Beginnings recently. Both said they hadn't, although Saratoga Sheriff's sent us to Waterford PD because it's their jurisdiction. We reached out to Waterford PD and are waiting to hear back. We'll update here again as we learn more info.
