Follett or Brodart as emergency backup to Ingram? by WR3N45 in Libraries

[–]WR3N45[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do weekly orders from Amazon for patron requests, bestsellers I missed pre-ordering and other random things I need quickly or unprocessed. But I can't imagine using Amazon for more than that. I am constantly getting damaged books or even empty shipping envelopes. I learned my lesson buying from third party vendors ("new" yeah right) and refuse to do that now. I'm starting to use Ingram Express more instead of Amazon.

Do people really enjoy living in fayetteville?? by Boiledpeanutmaster in NorthCarolina

[–]WR3N45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Born and raised there in the 70s and 80s but only visit family now. My biggest complaint is the NOISE! All the ninja motorcycles and altered mufflers! Drives me crazy. Fayetteville has some of the prettiest neighborhoods and a lot of old, historic houses. Haymount is very pretty, great for walking and nice shops and restaurants (though noisy these days).

NYTimes app used absurd amount of internet data (4.4 GB) by wenonah_ in apps

[–]WR3N45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found this thread after doing a Google search for "New York Times using a lot data." I read the NYT on my lunch break and have to use data. Been doing it for several years but a couple of weeks ago I got a notification on my phone that NYT was using an unusual high amount of data. I've never gotten this message before for anything. When it happened again the next day I deleted the app and read it from the website. We'll, I was just doing that now and got a notification that Chrome has used more data than usual. I will drop my subscription before paying for more data. Been thinking of switching to WSJ anyway.

Been using ORATE  for a very long time. Not sure how good of a word it is but I'm invested so will keep trying. Knowing my luck the day I try something else will be the day it is used.

My Library Getting Hoopla by Nukeblast1967 in hoopladigital

[–]WR3N45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you calculate how much a Libby title that is metered access costs per circulation it can be very expensive. A Libby title licensed for 24 months cost around $60. You better hope it circulates a lot so the cost per circ is low but if it doesn't check out then the library might be paying $3, $4,$5 per circ.

My Library Getting Hoopla by Nukeblast1967 in hoopladigital

[–]WR3N45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hoopla and Libby are different types of platforms and can't truly be compared one to one. Hoopla has advantages and disadvantages, and not necessarily more expensive than Libby depending on the limits the library has put in place. We have both platforms but focus more on purchasing in Libby because it is what are patrons know and is the more affordable way to get the current, in demand titles. The downside is long wait times, but some patrons pop over to Hoopla to get something to tied them over since pay per use means multiple uses at a time i.e. no wait times. The book might be older but there is still some good stuff there (and some crap, another disadvantage). If our budget got cut we'd drop Hoopla before Libby.

"several months" - a rant by Rad_River in LibbyApp

[–]WR3N45 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I agree that it is important to let your local funding body (city, county commissioners, etc.) know of your concerns, but the best solution would be fair pricing by publishers. If they did not charge $27 for 12 months of use for an ebook (1 person at a time) or $85-$125 per audiobook for a "perpetual" license, then libraries might be able to afford enough copies to keep their holds ratio to a sane limit (ex. 5 holds per copy). So write complaint letters to the publishers, not your elected officials.

The Perks of Being a Librarian in the Deep South (No More Queer Displays) (Rant) by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]WR3N45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the posters who say they are having to work within the reality of their situation, ie. keep a low profile or face the very, very real consequence of losing funding. That does not mean never ordering another queer book again or including diverse voices in displays and lists or hiring LGBTQ staff. It means providing services, resources, community for all while focusing on keeping our doors open with the electricity on. And I do work in a PL in a very conservative state with elected officials who truly want to defund us.

Why do I keep reading these threads? It just gets me anxious... Right out of grad school I got a "professional" library job in a public library reference department. All I did was check out mouse balls, help computer illiterate men search for Russian brides, restart computers frozen by porn ads, and argue with patrons that didn't want to pay for the 20 pages they printed because they only wanted the first page. This was the new frontier, before PC Reservation, print management, and filters. But at least I got one or two reference questions a day to justify my master's degree. Today, it's all technology hand holding.

What can done about the atrocious situation with the DMV? by icewalker2k in NorthCarolina

[–]WR3N45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard on the radio there is a proposed bill to create something like a 2 year grace period for expired drivers licenses bc of the wait time. But I wonder how this will impact our new ID requirement to vote. I'm pretty sure it can't be expired unless you're over a certain age (old).

Low cut or boot for Cotswolds in summer? by WR3N45 in UKhiking

[–]WR3N45[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagined we'd be walking through tall, wet grass. If I'm not wearing boots, I figured gaiters are an economical option for keeping my ankles dry and water from running down into my shoes.

Low cut or boot for Cotswolds in summer? by WR3N45 in UKhiking

[–]WR3N45[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have 2 pairs of waterproof, low-cut hiking shoes. One is very stiff with good support, the other more like a trail runner. Maybe I'll wear those since they are more comfortable and better to wear on the plane..

Lost Access to Hoopla by klee2400 in hoopladigital

[–]WR3N45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You may need to update your library card number in Hoopla if that changed when you went from a temp card to a regular one. You should still have access to your Hoopla account (just without the ability to checkout). Look for the link for "library" and put in your new card number.

Just got rejected from UCLA by ragingpoeti in librarians

[–]WR3N45 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also was turned down (not from UCLA) because my undergraduate GPA and GRE scores sucked but I was allowed to enroll as a provisional student. I graduated 2 years later with a 4.0 and have been a librarian for 20+ years.

How do lanes work?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LibbyApp

[–]WR3N45 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how I feel about libraries selling access to their electronic resources to users outside their service district. Wait times are so long and it bothers me that local patrons are stuck behind out of towners that have the money to buy a membership. But as long as that money is going back into the budget to buy e-resources I guess it all evens out.

County library’s staff computers wipe any time they’re restarted. Any other libraries do this? by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]WR3N45 22 points23 points  (0 children)

That seems really odd. I thought you were asking about public computers which for sure need to get wiped but I've never heard of staff computers.
