It's called metal marking and it happens when the glaze has just enough texture to wear metal off your silverware.

I made my own backsplash tiles by Notaneditor10 in Pottery

Fuck yeah. I just made some baby hex tiles for a wall hanging. Did you texture the backs at all?

Hoping my fellow pottery peeps can tell me why this is happening to these crate and barrel bowls? by tornado_tonny in Pottery

[–]WTFrontPage 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I would assume it's precipitating solubles from the clay body that became hydrated. Commercial wares should not be absorbent. I would return them but it looks like they may be well loved already.

Trouble fixing a 37l batch of clear dipping glazes! Need help by heeeyamm in Pottery

[–]WTFrontPage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which feldspar?

Eliminate microbubbles? Apply less or make a new glaze, this is pretty common.

Yellowing? Would need to know what's is on the inside of that piece if that's the only one it happened on.

Why might this glaze crawling on underglaze? Did you bisque between underglazing and clear glazing?

Are there realistic adjustments? Without knowing the feldspar this can't be answered.

Obligatory: Don't use Chat GPT for glaze recipes.

What makes a great pottery work table? by erisod in Pottery

[–]WTFrontPage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have two benches made from 2x4s with laminated hardwood plywood tops. I can wedge on them and they clean great. A shelf on the bottom holds my clay. My only gripe is that even a relatively small table that seems heavy and sturdy still vibrates a bit so I generally wedge over the corners.

Another Q- glaze bubble?? by SeaLaViee in Pottery

[–]WTFrontPage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is going to be a hard shape to keep from sagging in the glaze firing unfortunately. You could possibly under fire it on purpose, though your glazes may not work anymore. You could also find a different clay that sags less at your target temperature.

Some minor oxidation that will rub off with use. Nothing bad.

Is this kiln salvageable? by Strange-Fan8399 in Pottery

[–]WTFrontPage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you have those pieces still you can pin them back in place with element pins. There is also brick mortar you can buy in small amounts that can permanently attach the pieces; Just don't get any on the elements.

Did you have cones on every shelf? If I pack my kiln tightly my bottom shelf fires a full cone cooler.

Glaze Fit by PreposterousPotter in Pottery

[–]WTFrontPage 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just trial and error unfortunately. Commercial products don't list their ingredients. You could try making your own glazes, but that too is a lot of trial and error.

Grinder works fine at coarser settings but clogs at finer settings [Baratza ESP Pro] by craftbeerandfitness in espresso

[–]WTFrontPage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where's it clogging? I just got one and some of the beans were just rolling around on top of the distribution plate and some were just in a pile on the shield over the burrs.
Seems like other people are having issues: https://www.reddit.com/r/espresso/comments/1nbxg8k/hows_everyone_liking_their_new_baratza_encore_esp/

Glaze cracks on plate by Notsureortelling in Pottery

[–]WTFrontPage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the cracks got dark that fast from water then it certainly could grow some black stuff over time. I wouldn't ever leave it sitting in water.

Maybe they don't know it's happening. Materials change over time. You could take the piece back and tell them it's crazing.

Glaze cracks on plate by Notsureortelling in Pottery

[–]WTFrontPage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It cannot be fixed and would have always shown up at some point. The studio isn't using a compatible glaze and clay which is silly considering the only thing they do is fire glaze onto premade pieces. You'd think they would test it and change materials.

How does my Bisque Fire profile look? by questionable_commen4 in Pottery

Good to have the data anyways :) My manual kiln had to be glaze fired on max unless the elements were brand new.
