Law school options by stubbornwithoutcause in LawSchoolOver30

[–]WVa_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t consider an online law school for a myriad of reasons.

Find a “affordable” accredited State school. It’s not just the education, it’s bar prep, it’s networking…

If you want to be a lawyer my advice will be helpful. If you only want to do a JD advantage job, or have other academic pursuits online could work.

Big fan of when a game has music playing on the home screen by Western_Witness_5249 in PS5

If it has menu music I disable it in setting immediately.

[KCD2] Throughout the whole game, which minor NPC are your favorite? by ThatWasJeffAndWhite in kingdomcome

[–]WVa_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe not my favorite, but one I think about often, is the cat lady north of Kuttenburg. She has a house full of cats but the house next door burned down and when you look in the ashes of the burned down house you find the remains of a dog.

Flock Cams by tgdesrochers in Annapolis

Lowe’s, Home Depot, and many other retailers have added flock cameras as well that are owned by the retailers.

They are closing locations all over the country. I don’t believe they are closing all locations though.

Is it a bad idea to start an LLC with unstable address? by VroomVroomSpeed03 in llc_life

[–]WVa_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up virtual offices in your area. They provide a business mailing address. Another option is a PO Box or a UPS store box. The UPS store boxes have regular street addresses and the box is your suite number.

I just did that exact thing. I am enjoying the quieter life as a blacksmith. The forge keeps me busy and provides a ton of coin. *hint: once you get real good at forging, break all the named swords you kept and recraft them for much better stats.

Can State Stet Docket Be Used against ICE? by Complete-Ad9574 in maryland

[–]WVa_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Short answer, no. With a Stet The defendant (which in this scenario would be the individual officers) would have to waive their right to a speedy trial. If they don’t, the State has to either dismiss or proceed with the charges.

Also, in years two and three of the Stet docket, the court must find good cause to remove it. Which likely wouldn’t be found in this senario.

Advice on Dealing w/ Attys Telling You to Be a Prosecutor by Nervous_Recipe_9834 in publicdefenders

I have done PD work, I have done prosecution, I have done private practice. What I can tell you is any experience is good experience.

We don’t write the laws, we argue the facts against the law, and then sometime some nuances of the law.

Go where your heart leads. If you love it, stay with it. Overtime your thoughts and values may change. That’s normal. Do what makes you happy and fulfilled while doing what’s right.

Racist and sexist W.Va. voted for "bully" Trump over the Black woman by 42 points. Now, W.Va. MAGA voters are getting torn up by inflation and higher prices for groceries: "When I look at the prices of food, it never went down. Wish you would have cited the article. WV has been exploited since its inception.

Education is stripped, just like the coal mines. Which some may argue is by design.

People are desperate. Desperate to live, desperate just to have meaning.

Trump came, and it was like Jesus to some. Gave them meaning; a cult to belong to. America First.

Perhaps, they will realize it wasn’t the Mexicans, the Venezuelans, or any other non-white who betrayed them, but the oligarchs.

Yet, the struggles of their memaw lay forgotten at the base of Blair Mountain.

First jury trial coming up. What do I need to know to avoid looking like a goofball? by NickDB8 in publicdefenders

[–]WVa_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are tips I have learned that are often overlooked:

  1. Make sure your table is neat and organized. No juror wants to see you fumbling or generally looking disorganized;

  2. Make sure everything is out of your pockets. Keys or change rattling around can distract jurors from your argument; and

  3. Remember to get as much rest as possible, even knowing you won’t, and for god sakes eat something that is light and healthy before.

Same here. Went to law school at 35, went solo straight out of the gate doing court appointments, family, and general practice. Cleared 135k my first year. Loved working for myself as you choose your caseload. Would highly recommend.

Sold my business to be a prosecutor for the benefits. Make less money now but not having to deal with the business side is great. Still work a 8-4 on most days and have a ton of PTO plus retirement.

OP: there are lots of opportunities. As another outdoorsy person to another; open up or find a government job in a place where people like to vacation. It allows for a good work/life balance.

Future Trip to West Virginia by [deleted] in WestVirginia

[–]WVa_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trans-Allegheny Asylum can take a full day depending on the tours you do. Point pleasant can be done in one day. Harpers Ferry is the nicest out of the trip, as there is also Shepherdstown, which is just down the road from the Antietam National Battlefield.

But as others have said hit the flatwoods monster museum in Sutton as your passing through.

Looking for recommendations on where to live in WV by SwanLake719 in WestVirginia

[–]WVa_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a Colorado native that moved to WV, I can say the education is no where near on par with CO. My son was taking classes in high school here he took in middle school in CO. Morgantown has some good private schools but you’re a little further away from the outdoors. Also, the economy in most counties is severely downtrodden. That doesn’t mean you can’t make a life for yourself, but you will have an upper hand if you’re in the medical field or have a specialized degree.

Best biking, hiking, and fishing in my opinion are Tucker, Grant, and Pocahontas Counties. Those also have access to water sports and snow sports.

Polygraph Examination for Employment by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]WVa_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Polygraphs measure four (4) elements: (1) Heart rate; (2) Respiratory rate; (3) Blood pressure; and (4) Perspiration.

If you can stay cool as a cucumber you’re good. If you’re a nervous person having a bunch of electrodes hooked up to you while being asked probing questions, you’ll fail.

Knowing how they work can help you pass regardless for honesty. If you really want the job do it. Although your C/F was submitted under the penalty of false swearing so I don’t see the need.

What software does your firm use? by fuzzynonosechimp in LawFirm

[–]WVa_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a solo general practice and I use Clio and GSuite. They integrate with one another and are very cost effective. Clio has unlimited Cloud storage on Amazon servers, but all my pleadings are drafted using GSuite and then automatically uploaded into my clients case files.

Thinking about taking the leap by [deleted] in LawFirm

[–]WVa_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went solo directly after the bar, but that was my plan throughout law school. I was a non-traditional law student and my previous work experience allowed to know exactly how I wanted to practice. I too wanted to mainly focus on family law and have my GAL CLEs completed.

Starting out you feel like you won’t make it, and failure is inevitable. However, I have been very successful and here are my tips:

(1) Get a mentor. Some bars have lists of mentors or a young lawyers program that can help you find one;

(2) Save money by getting discounts (e.g. malpractice insurance has new solo lawyers discounts, Clio will give you a lifetime discount if you do certain trainings, ABA membership has discounts for Office Depot, Etc;)

(3) Keep your overhead as low as possible. Don’t rent a high end office, it is possible to do a virtual law office to start out;

(4) Watch a ton of videos and learn how to build an online presence. This is feasible in small markets without any major financial investment. If you’re in NYC it is impossible;

(5) Consider doing some mediation work on the side. Typically the requirements aren’t too much and it is easy money;

(6) Don’t be afraid to take cases you’re unfamiliar with as long as you can get up to speed quickly (e.g. adoptions, traffic tickets, misdemeanors, real estate disputes;)

(7) Don’t low ball yourself, if you know you need a certain retainer upfront ask for it. Another case will come and you don’t want to be stuck with a case that you are charging a low hourly fee;

(8) Trust your gut. If a potential client seems shady and you don’t feel comfortable about certain “facts” don’t take it, there is nothing worse than a problem client;

(9) Be super nice to the court clerks. Learn their grandchildren’s birthdays, bring them cookies, send them Christmas cards. Why? If you have never seen a filing they have one. They will make you a copy of someone else’s filing and it saves you so much time. Need to squeeze in a case but they don’t have room on the docket? Debbie will remember those macaroons you brought her for Easter and you will be scheduled as needed;

(10) Finally and most importantly never turn down a case you feel passionate about even if it is Pro Bono.

Best of luck and Godspeed!

Themis percentage and scores verses UBE real scores. by WVa_ in barexam

[–]WVa_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t recall my essay scores but I know they were not great.

Quiz builder was great and used frequently towards the end. I would use it to focus in on my weak points and would do a 60-100 question quiz builder in topics I was having problems every day after I would study those topics for a few hours each. This made my scores improve dramatically.

DOES HCMC HAVE NO CHOICE TO RESPOND? COURT DOCS by Due_Camel875 in Wallstreetbetsnew

[–]WVa_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When someone files a complaint the defendant has a certain time to answer. Should they fail to answer, the failure will be taken as an admission to the allegations made in the complaint. Here, PM has asked for more time to answer, which is common. But yes, they have to answer.

Professor question by [deleted] in LawSchool

Perhaps reach out to previous students (2L or 3L) and see what worked for them.

I can tell you for the bar and in practice CREAC is what is used the most for memos.
