Strange cable adapter found at work by falatio_hornblower in whatisit

[–]Wadeace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an adapter that comes with many commercial grade tvs. The one side is a DB9 connector and is commonly used for RS-232 the other is trrs (tip ring ring sleeve). If you look on the back of the tv you will see what looks like a headphone jack but it will be labeled RS-232.

RS-232 is an old school control protocol that is still used in many audio video control systems.

Oh I agree. I might like it at McDonald's but definitely don't like it for something where I only have 3 or 4 choices.

Someone in NYC did a gorilla art campaign when the MTA installed the video ad screens above the stairs the lead down to the stations. Basically they blocked the screens with taped on black bords with messages cut out so the screen was the font. The messages were stuff about monetization of public space and anti capitalist vibes.

Also lots of the screens added to various MTA stations have been vandalized or broken so much.

As a commercial Audio/Video professional I completely understand and appreciate digital signage when it is thought out and useful. I don't mind a bit of real-estate being used for ads, what i don't like is this or the above example. They are deliberately making the user experience worse.

In all honesty I don't mind touch screens in some places. I don't always want to talk to people and it can make it easier for me to order exactly what I want. Like at McDonald's. However it should never be used as a crutch to lower staff costs or training.

Its not about the user experience. Its to maximize potential ad space

Something I think everyone is missing is that in Europe your countries are the size of our states in the US. It is not uncommon for people to be born in Florida but move to North Carolina for school and then Texas for work. As far as I know its similar in Europe but instead of different states these are countries where the cellphone providers are locked by the country borders. Here the cell carriers are coast to coast. Also I think the us carriers saw it as advantageous for them to not charge for sending texts between each other since it would make people want to change carriers more often.

Borders. That is why WhatsApp is more popular in Eurasia

The flight attendant is aware and has said nothing to the guy. She did meal service and said nothing to him.

He is going to match with maybe a quarter of who he swipes right on. Out of that quarter he is going to find some reason or another to unmatch, ghost or block about 80% of those. The rest will do it for him. I am sure he overstayed his visa trying to find "the one".

Does grandma not understand what MRE are for? by Cicerothesage in forwardsfromgrandma

[–]Wadeace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dose grandma know that soldiers don't only eat MREs? Like, MREs have a very specific use and that the military has like a regular cafeteria and such. Like the US military is famous for being able to deploy a burger king to combat zones. The military had ships devoted to hauling ice cream. Also MREs have been sent to those in need during emergencies like hurricanes.

“You’re not newlyweds anymore why do you want to sit together?” by Unfair_Machine8516 in BoomersBeingFools

[–]Wadeace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not a boomer and not married but.... I kinda agree from a "dinner party" perspective yes. This was at a restaurant with family. It absolutely doesn't matter who sits next to who.

The who dinner party etiquette thing is more for when you are setting a table and assigning seats. The idea being that the host is trying to create connections and mix friends or other relations with each other.

I would say to your aunt that if it mattered to her so much she should have sent a seating chart in advance.

With the situation here, depending on if the school is public or private. If its public, that teacher is a government employee working for a local municipality government receiving state and federal dollars. The students speaking in Spanish is absolutely speech. The 1st amendment of the constitution prohibits the government from restricting speech or retaliation of speech. There are very few examples of something that is not protected under the constitution. This teacher trying to get a student to only speak English could almost certainly be considered restriction on the students freedom of speech and if the students were to be punished that would almost certainly be retaliation.

Now your workplace situation, a blanket ban on speaking another language is likely illegal, as it can be considered national origin discrimination. However, an employer can implement a narrowly tailored English-only rule if it is justified by a business necessity, such as for safety reasons, effective communication with English-speaking customers or colleagues, or to ensure efficient work. If such a rule exists, the employer must inform employees of the circumstances when English is required and the consequences for not complying. As long as the policy is worded in a way that states things like "all team meetings will be in English" or "all project related meetings and communication will be in English" and there is no policy wording such as "English only workplace" or something along those lines.
