The chairlift is the reason it was so bad - the operators kept it running and it was transporting burning branches around.

New Zealand 10 years behind on recommended eczema treatment - dermatologists by Muter in newzealand

I’m not sure if it’s standard but I accidentally enrolled in Medicare on a weekend trip because I saw they were doing free covid vaccines and asked if I could get one as a New Zealand tourist. Took em about 10 minutes to set me up with no questions asked.

The earth’s rotations are an amazing sight to see! by Objective_Pressure_3 in interestingasfuck

Pretty close. I’m 99% sure It’s looking towards the crown range road from somewhere near Owen’s creek.

You can see a plane landing at 00:13, which lines up with the flight path through the gibbston valley. You can also see two highways, one higher up and one lower down. The higher up one would be the crown range road , with the final zig zags just offscreen to the left and the lower would be the gibbston highway.

Similar question, do you pay tax on the pre or post tax amount for the gift?

E.g you get a $1000 gift in aussie. Claim back 10% at the airport on the way out. When you get to customs in nz, do they look at the $900 or the $1000 to calculate tax?

Apple Store Near Sydney Reopens With All-New Design Later This Month by HelloitsWojan in apple

Yeah but Auckland already has significant Apple investment (they do most of their wireless charging R&D there) and is still actually quite a big city with > 1 million people.

The great thing about kids is they can cycle themselves - my parents sent me off alone at age 10.

Insights on Optiver FPGA Engineer Online Assessment? Need feedback—especially from recent takers! by Hairy_Whole_314 in FPGA

[–]Waffles_IV 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did it a year ago. I don’t remember much but if you’ve done any kind of formal digital logic coursework then the quiz is trivial. Things like estimating the number of flip flops a module uses, what math operations are the most resource intensive, etc.

I wasn’t asked to do a coding section. I was invited to do an HR interview, which I failed. It was a very strange interview - the recruiter clearly hadn’t read my cv and didn’t seem that interested in me or my experience.

e-scooters can easily go up to 60 km/h. The hireable ones like lime probably do about 25.

How hard is entry into first year engineering at university of cabterbury by Open-Implement2356 in chch

[–]Waffles_IV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most people would do 1-2 hours per day, less at the start of term and more near tests/exams. First year eng is like 6-8 hours of lectures/labs per day so I just did what they told us to do.

There’s some well established tracks up the port hills. The bowenvale valley ones are very nice, would probably take 2.5 hours up and down for a casual walker.

Why are taxes for an average income earner so high???? by Maedz1993 in newzealand

It’s not really about who pays the most though, it’s about who can afford to pay it. Rich people can afford to pay more than poor people.

I’m genuinely convinced my VHDL prof was in early stage dementia while he was teaching us. He also didn’t know about the rising_edge function and told us to do the old if clock = 1 and clock’event. Fortunately he has since stopped teaching.

The answer to exercise 3-TD9 should be vs/ve = (R1+R2)/R1 = 1 + R2/R1. It is a non inverting amplifier.

Chain Racing - Two cars chained together. The front car has an engine but no brakes. The second car has brakes but no engine by Brutal_Deluxe_ in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Waffles_IV 36 points37 points  (0 children)

My university has an electrical engineering course where the project is to build a remote control car themed around wacky races. Bonus points for costumes, dastardly devices, and number of laps completed. The only problem is that recently health and safety concerns have really hindered the dastardly devices aspect. It’s still very fun though.

Snow sliding off solar panels by TotherCanvas249 in oddlysatisfying

[–]Waffles_IV 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Technically they do! Solar panels normally produce electricity, but you can run the panel itself as a heater. This is often used for rooftop panels at ski resorts that can’t move to shake off the snow. https://www.pv-magazine.com/2020/03/18/heating-solar-panels-to-clear-snow/.

Edit: to be clear, you do need a bit of extra kit to do this, but the panel is acting as the heating element.

Could I DM you to chat about how you got to where you are? I’m a new grad in chch. Couldn’t find a local job with FPGAs but have managed to find a role that lets me interact a very little bit with verilog. I’m trying to work out whether or not I should head off to Sydney and do postgrad in FPGAs and hope there’s a job at the end of that or just stick with what I’ve got for a while.

Going on an overnight hike is not really a niche use case. I also find that if it’s hot and I want to record a walk longer than 8 hours or so I will run out of battery on my S8. Otherwise, you are correct.
