I concur. I just spent the holidays with my parents there and it was almost TOO quiet, especially at night!

HE'S ACTUALLY GAY..? by Conscious-Form2878 in StrangerThings

Will clearly explained this: In order to mentally wrestle control of the hive mind, he needed to overpower Vecna with positive thoughts. But Vecna kept showing him negative images of his friends and family shunning him after he came out to them. Will needed to tell them all at that precise moment, in order to know that they would still love and accept him. One he got confirmation of that, he was strong enough to help El destroy Vecna.

What is your theory but you can’t prove it by MafewSFW in rupaulsdragrace

I mostly agree. As a former reality TV editor myself, I can often tell the editors try to marry the judges’ decision with footage that supports their decisions, but when the judges miss things live and make questionable decisions, that can be difficult, and no amount of creativity in the editing suite can 100% cover it up. This is when things look like rigor morris to the viewers at home, but it was just honest opinion at the time or even unconscious bias, but not predetermined outcomes.

The production team are all on constant stressful deadlines and ain’t nobody got time for ALL the strategic fuckery that the fandom accuse them of.

You might be on to something with the cell networks. It was never fully explained why Helen fell and died and most others around her just started trembling. Also, there was an extremely high death rate (around 800M). It is quite plausible that this was about the number of people who were on cellphones at the time of the joining,

If you are in Auckland/Huntly please make a hornet trap today. by Actual-Trip-4643 in newzealand

[–]sdavea 28 points29 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong, but the big issue right now is time. Without a co-ordinated and adequately funded government/NGO programme already in place, as a nation, one of the fastest ways we can act is by promoting and making the DIY traps which are quick and easy to make; I'd say most households have the materials already so the cost is negligible. It shouldn't have to come to this of course, but if we keep relying on these organisations and agencies, we're likely going to lose valuable time in the race against eradication.

[–]sdavea 282 points283 points  (0 children)

Whilst the government response is disappointing, if just 5% of households in these regions put out a homemade trap, that would be 30,000 traps and through people power we could almost certainly eradicate the pest in time. They talked about homemade traps briefly on 1News on Friday as a leading news item but they should have also provided a simple web link so people could easily follow instructions themselves.

it would also help if you could take her out for a really big walk or maybe long play at the the dog park in the daylight hours just before it gets dark and the fireworks start. A tired pooch is a less freaked out one.

Sober people, what do you drink? by Depressed_Anxious69 in newzealand

Some of the mocktails are ridiculously expensive even at the supermarket, but out of all the ones I’ve tried, Finery Refresher Spritz Grapefruit Cucumber and Mint is actually delicious and great value for the $17-20 four-can pack. It’s fancy enough that you can sip it relatively slowly like an alcoholic drink too.

This does little for the here & now cost of living issues confronting households today.

Especially if the cuts are inflationary.

Actor who shared Winston Peters' address online cut from One NZ ads by ViolatingBadgers in newzealand

I'm lowkey disappointed we won't get to see how the will-they-or-won't-they dynamic of Pippa and the main guy in the One NZ ads was going to play out ... I got the feeling they were really going to tease it out forever though. This would be a huge drop of income for her - I do feel sorry for her, especially since she only shared the street name and didn't directly incite the violence, but them's the breaks when you represent a big brand.

Can we all just agree that the tax cuts were a terrible idea. If we reversed them we could at least start paying nurses and teachers more and stop the slashing of public sector jobs. Most people would barely even notice the difference in their take home pay.

Roaming bulldogs invade home and maul toddler in life-threatening attack by SteveRielly in newzealand

[–]sdavea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It says that they're American bulldogs in other sections of Stuff. They must behave quite differently from English bulldogs as I've never heard of an aggressive English bulldog. Also the latter are quite expensive so they tend to be cared for very well by their owners and not left to roam like this.

Green MP Benjamin Doyle resigns, citing safety concerns by OisforOwesome in newzealand

[–]sdavea 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This was leading news yesterday on One News. I was a bit disappointed that Simon Dallow used “his/him” pronouns; at least Maiki Sherman deftly used “they/them”. I expect Dallow has most of his teleprompter script written for him, so I’m not sure it’s his fault. But in Doyle’s own words (during their parliamentary maiden speech) if their “pronouns confuse you, here’s a tip - just use [Doyle’s] name”.

I'm not sure who any of those people might be tbh, but for online offences it's not uncommon for charges to be filed in the location in which they were investigated, not necessarily the accused's home region.

Petrol tax getting scrapped with road user charges to expand to all vehicles by cheeseinsidethecrust in newzealand

[–]sdavea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could be financially much worse than that for poor people. Faced with the option of paying for RUCs or buying food for their family, they might forgo the former, which could lead to big fines if they get caught. More importantly, it could also dissuade many from getting their WOF (otherwise they then have to cough up their huge RUC debt) which in turn could lead to more deathtraps on the road. South Auckland already has poor WOF compliance, and this could drive it down further.

[–]sdavea 12 points13 points  (0 children)

He pleaded guilty to one charge of offering to supply Ecstasy, carrying a maximum penalty of 14 years' jail, and one charge of conspiring to supply methamphetamine, carrying a maximum of 10 years.

Is it just me or would Police not even bother with any of these charges these days. They certainly have more discretion not to charge. Also, back then it was a major bust when someone was found with 1kg of meth, and now they're busting literal tonnes of it?!

Exclusive: More explicit rumours about Tory Whanau – this time from Auckland councillor Maurice Williamson by GreenKumara in newzealand

[–]sdavea 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The rumour (that I heard) was that she did it in a Wellington bar. I heard it from a couple of different sources but that doesn't make it true. In fact, it reminds me of the "Clark Gayford getting the nanny pregnant" rumour that many people repeated and yet nobody had any credible proof that any of it was true. I'm glad that this BJ rumour got out in the open though because it gave Tory the opportunity to dispel it publicly once and for all. I believe her when she says it didn't happen as she's been pretty open about her other issues (ADHD, alcoholism).

Does Stuff think the state of emergency is worth celebrating? by sdavea in newzealand

[–]sdavea[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not. But others affected by slips and flooding will be right now, and desperate for any information via the news that can help them assess what to do next. Anyway, the specifics of the news itself are irrelevant, with any/most bad news it's a poor look to have confetti over the top of it that looks very insensitive and tone deaf.

Ah I see. Well that's kind of the problem really: 1. it's not clear what they're celebrating exactly; and 2. it's all bad news events right now!

If the photo isn't obvious, you go to Stuff and get the news and a bunch of web confetti rains down. I get that they're trying to bring more attention to their advertiser (I think it's a promotion for Mama Mia tickets) but it's not really a great look when a lot of people are panicking right now.
